My family has owned property on Mayne Island continuously since the 1800’s.
I have always had a strong interest with local government; having been involved in numerous planning committees,
Ratepayers Associations, task forces and commissions over the past 30 years. Most recently I served as a Trustee and
Chair of the Mayne Island Improvement District.
I currently serve as a volunteer on the Mayne Island Advisory Planning Commission, Ferry Advisory Committee,
Mayne Island Deer Committee, RCMP Liaison Committee and Mayne Island Transportation Committee.
I coordinated the successful petition that was the first step in having the lighthouse designated a heritage
lighthouse—one of four in BC, insuring it’s preservation for generations to come.
I have attended virtually all local Trust meetings in recent years, so am well versed on procedures and the
expectations of a Trustee.
I don’t subscribe to the “if you don’t like it you can move” attitude. Change must benefit, not destroy, the island and
its residents.
My thoughts

The reports that the Trust’s annual budget is expanding out of control concern me. It is a serious situation that needs
to be addressed by each and every Trustee.
I am concerned that some ‘broad brush’ Trust initiatives do not necessarily address issues specific to individual islands
and do not respect the fact that each island within the Trust is unique. Each island is distinct in nature and the Trust
needs to respect that. The current trend of centralized policy making is threatening the individuality of the islands.
I want to focus on having the initiative and decision making taking place on island. From my personal observations
Trust staff have too many special interest projects, advocacy issues and initiatives that do not necessarily serve the
wants or needs of each island.
As Chair of the Improvement District, I initiated an ongoing series of town hall meetings that allowed taxpayers to
provide input to the Trustees in an open consultative manner. These meetings directly influenced policy and have
given islanders a more engaged voice in the process of local government. Our Islands Trust Committee has similar
sessions at the end of each monthly meeting, something I wish to expand on if elected.
Why Run?

As a resident with a long-time interest in local government, I have attended most Trust meetings in recent years. I
have admired how Trustees have handled complex and difficult decisions by listening to islanders and sometimes
having to walk a fine line between different interests to achieve a result that truly represented a majority of the
community. An approach I intend to follow.

I believe I can positively represent our community by defending what we have evolved over generations, rather than
rubber-stamping inappropriate, intrusive policies originating from off-island bureaucrats such as the RAR regulation.
The community’s experience needs to be respected, not over-ruled.
