HEADTEACHER
Dear Parent/Carer,
It has been such a rewarding week at LDA.
On Wednesday we welcomed our future
Year 7 cohort to the school for their
Induction Day. Pupils were informed all
about the school during a special assembly
by their Head of Year Miss Rogers and
they then enjoyed a range of lessons across the curriculum.
Meanwhile our Year 10s have been participating in visits to
various local colleges this week which will help to prepare
them for their education Post 16. Thank you to Miss O’Reilly
for her hard work in organising these visits.
Yesterday our Year 9s took part in an Options Taster Day experiencing sessions in their forthcoming Options Subjects
in preparation for Key Stage 4. They all enjoyed the
experience and they have been set homework in these
areas to be completed by the return of school in September.
Thank you to Mr Owen and Mrs Whitby for enabling this
excellent event to take place.
I have no doubt that next week will be equally as busy but
just as much fun with, weather permitting, the stand out
event being our annual Festival of Sport taking place on
13th July.
Wishing you a good weekend.
Yours sincerely,
Mr B Bridden, Headteacher MEd MSc
YEAR 10 CHILD DEVELOPMENT
On Wednesday 29th June Year 10 Child Development pupils
were treated to a visit from Julia Cotter, a Whiston Hospital
community midwife and her student midwife, Olivia. Julia
brought in a huge selection of the equipment that she uses
on a daily basis to show the class and explained that her job
involves delivering a range of antenatal classes and postnatal care, as well as delivering babies. We were treated to
an antenatal check-up demonstration thanks to Mrs Mills, it
was lovely to be able to listen to her baby’s heartbeat and
see how the midwives use the equipment. We were even
able to experience a demonstration of hypnobirthing
relaxation techniques. Julia talked to the class about how
she became a midwife, the course she studied at University
and additional training she has done. This was the first time
Julia had visited Lord Derby Academy and she was
extremely impressed by our school and our pupils. It was
fantastic to hear about her experiences and we hope that
she will come back and visit us again in the next academic
year.
FESTIVAL OF SPORT III
A reminder that our ‘Festival of Sport III’ takes place next
Wednesday 13th July.
FOS III involves all students in a whole day of sport with each
form competing as a team.
This is a COMPULSORY event and all students must attend
school that day in full LDA school PE kit.
If your child is injured then
they should still arrive in
kit and they will take part
as a referee / judge to
earn competition points
for their form. The start /
finish times of the school
day are the same. Please
ensure that your child has
plenty of water to drink
and sun cream etc if
necessary.
CLASS OF 2016 PROM
Wow! Look at the class of 2016, don’t they look fabulous?
After all of the hard work from both staff and students alike
we celebrated in style last Thursday where 130 students and
staff attended the Leavers Prom at Aintree Racecourse.
The evening was a huge success with lots of fun, laughter
and dancing which carried on until midnight and a good time
was had by all. The venue and visiting photographers even
complemented our students on their exemplary conduct
throughout the night. All students were a credit to
themselves, their families and Lord Derby Academy.
Miss Rogers would like to thank all staff who supported
the year group, with special thanks to Miss Donaldson,
who worked tirelessly to ensure the entire evening was a
total success.
We wish each and every student good luck in the future
and we will look forward to seeing them on results day –
25th August 2016.

YEAR 7 TRANSITION GROUP
This term Year 7 have been
learning about The Battle of
Hastings. Some of the topics
covered so far include who will
be the next King of England and
The Battle of Stamford Bridge,
which allowed pupils to use
skills involving cause and
consequence, communication,
change and continuity. The
pupils have thoroughly enjoyed
learning about the different
battles. They have all made
progress in all the topics
covered so far, this is evident
in their assessments.
Well done Year 7!

YEAR 8 TRANSITION GROUP Over the last year the
pupils have really worked hard learning and engaging with
various topics, and have had extra support in English,
Literacy, Maths, Science, Geography, History and PSHE.
Within literacy support pupils read aloud and receive 1:1
support, practice spellings, use the Ruth Miskin, Skills
Builder and Lexia programmes. These programmes help to
improve Literacy and reading ages. In Geography pupils
have been focusing on Super Volcanos and understanding
how they are formed. They have produced excellent models
and have particularly enjoyed this topic. Year 8 pupils have
covered Tudors, Stewarts, Industrial Revolution and Public
Health as part of their History Curriculum. All of the pupils have made good progress in all their
subjects this year and as a result reading ages have also improved. Well done Year 8!
KS4 MENTORING Mentoring for our Year 10 and
Year 11 pupils was introduced at the start of this
year and has been a huge success. The pupils
under this umbrella are assigned a named Teaching
Assistant, who supports them in many areas such
as organisation, completion of coursework, attend
revision sessions and keeping them focused
throughout their examinations. The Year 11 cohort
reported that having a mentor helped them to build
confidence and gave them the support they needed
through such an important time in their lives. We
hope that this will be reflected in the coming GCSE
results and wish the leavers every success in the
future. Due to its success, mentoring will continue
next year.

Colleague of the Week Mrs Bruchez for constant
dedication beyond the call of duty to
enrich the lives of inclusion pupils.
SOCIAL SKILLS GROUP In addition to
lunch club, social skills groups have also been
introduced this year. These groups encourage
interaction and communication both verbally
and non-verbally. The pupils involved in these
groups meet once a week and focus on
developing their social and emotional skills.
This is proving to be very successful, as pupils
look forward to these sessions each week.
As a result of these sessions there has been
notable improvements in pupils’ confidence
through learning the importance of manners,
empathy, morals, friendship, showing emotions
and managing emotions.
Miss, Jones, Mrs Jenkins, Mr Hoslett and Miss Morris
also support inclusion.
Our aim is to offer our students a culture for learning with high standards and expectations for each individual within a safe environment, where students can
challenge their own fears of learning, access support, grow in confidence and progress with a renewed love for learning.
INCLUSION OVER THE PAST YEAR
We have successfully supported 49 pupils, including supporting a number
of Year 11 pupils for the full academic year enabling them to fulfil their
potential. Our pupils have received intensive support to help them access
the curriculum at their level, with a renewed love of learning and skills for
success.
They have been able to
implement projects as a
team on issues that are
close to their hearts
including “justice for the 96”.
They have
nurtured the
growth of
seedlings to
plants
through their
lessons in
horticulture
which is now
expanding
into growing
plants in
their own
gardens at
home.
The Green
Challenge
Our pupils have
enjoyed using
their imagination
in their art
lessons, and
were really
creative when
making the tribal
masks.
In collaboration with
the Forest Schools,
the programme aims
to improve physical
and mental wellbeing,
develop empathy for
the natural world and
develop skills of
independent learning.
Inclusion students
have embraced
working in the natural
environment and this
has provided a wealth
of opportunity to
expand their learning
experiences through
multi-sensory
exploration and
experimentation.
Inclusion pupils
successfully engaged
in 2 programmes.
It has been such a
success that we are
hoping to run more
programmes next
year.
