The Presidents Corner
By Bill Platt
It’s been a long hard winter and it’s still tough to
believe that we’re in the spring season. Lots of rain, lots
of unusually cold weather and even some April snow
has left me wondering if it’ll ever warm up. As I write
this in late April, the forecast is still for mornings in the
twenties. This has been one of the toughest winters for
running in a long time - the combination of cold
weather, bone chilling winds, and snowstorms have
made running an activity that requires dedication,
perseverance, and the ability to ignore the part of your
brain that prioritizes warmth and comfort. This year I
swear not to complain about the hot weather in July just hope I can stick to that.
Congratulations go out to all the local runners who
competed in the Boston Marathon, which to me is the
ultimate in road racing. Elsewhere in the newsletter
you’ll find a list of locals. Just to get to Boston is an
accomplishment in itself, requiring a demanding finish
time for any age in a qualifying marathon. And this one
was truly special just one year after the horrible events
in Boston. The word “hero” is so overused these days
that it is almost meaningless, but the first responders at
last years race are truly worthy of the term - rushing
into the horror to save lives instead of obeying the
rational impulse to run the other way. We all like to
think we would do the same - let’s hope we never have
to find out.

FMRRC Grand Prix Races are in BOLDFACE
Presidents Corner (cont. From Page 1)
This is a busy time for the race season in general and the Grand Prix series in particular. In May and June are the local Triple
Crown series - Run for the Roses and the Mountain Valley Hospice Run in May and the Lexington Run (also a Grand Prix race)
in June. Other Grand Prix races include the Johnson Jog in May and the Mule Haul and Adirondack Distance Run in June. I hope
to see you at any and all of these races - local running is definitely on the upswing.
Please remember to email our Grand Prix Chairwoman Trisha Bobowski ([email protected]) with your finish times
at Grand Prix races. It’s the only way to ensure that you receive the credit for your effort in the Grand Prix. And also remember
that you DO need to volunteer at a race to be eligible for Grand Prix competition. Volunteering basics are detailed in this issue.
Please feel free to attend FMRRC monthly meetings - they occur on the second Thursday of the month at 7 PM. We don’t
bite and love to see new people. In the summer there is the location bonus - they’re held at Karen’s Ice Cream Stand in Fort
Hunter.
Gotta run,
Bill

Volunteering with the FMRRC
Notes: Volunteering at a race is mandatory for consideration for FMRRC Grand Prix awards. For
a list of races to volunteer at, go to the FMRRC Grand Prix web page. Not all categories exist at
all Grand Prix races
Volunteering is fun and rewarding. It’s the heart of any organization and we at FMRRC aren’t any different. Each
year, at the two races we sponsor (Winter Wimp and Mule Haul) our members, their families, and friends come out
in full force to make sure we put on a wonderful race. We also help with many other races on our grand-prix list
each year. If you’re interested in volunteering, here is a listing of jobs and a description
Parking: Guide cars to designated parking areas
Set-up: Set-up tables for registration, food, water stops, finish line and chairs (if needed)
Day of Race Registration: Some people wait until race day to sign-up— we take their application and money, and
give them a race number and the give-away
Packet/Race Number Pick-up: When pre-registered runners come in you look-up their name on a list and give
them their race number and packet
Road Marshals: Help runners stay on course by guiding them around corners when there may be a couple of
different ways to go
Traffic Control: Make sure the vehicles stay away from the runners
Split Timers: At different mileage points in the race, tell runners their time as they run by
Water Stops: Give out water to runners as they run by
Apparel Sales: Sell FMRRC apparel
50/50 Ticket Seller: At our races we do a 50/50 raffle to benefit the scholarship fund
Finish Line: Guide runners through the finish line shoot and help them tear off their number, which then gets put
on the spindle. At the same time, someone with a handheld clock records the runners times.
Results: Compile times from finish link. Breakdown winners into overall and age-group categories.
Food: Give out food to the runners and volunteers as they come in from the race. You may also help out with
cutting up fruit.
Clean-up: Take down tables, chairs, finish line, pack-up supplies and gather garbage
Thank you to all who have volunteered and those who will in the future. Please contact Diane Hanson, at
[email protected] if you’d like more information or if you’re interested in volunteering.

Marathon Quotes
"You have to forget your last marathon before you try another. Your mind can't know what's coming."
Frank Shorter, 1972 Olympic marathon gold medalist
"The difference between the mile and the marathon is the difference between burning your fingers with a
match and being slowly roasted over hot coals."
Hal Higdon, running writer and coach
"I'm never going to run this again."
Grete Waitz, after winning her first of nine New York City marathons
"Anyone can run 20 miles. It's the next six that count."
Barry Magee
"Anyone can run a hundred meters, it's the next forty-two thousand and two hundred that count."
Seen on a running T-shirt
"No doubt a brain and some shoes are essential for marathon success, although if it comes down to a choice,
pick the shoes. More people finish marathons with no brains than with no shoes."
Don Kardong
"The marathon can humble you."
Bill Rodgers, winner of four Boston and four NYC marathons
“I thought about how many preconceived notions would crumble when I trotted along for 26 miles.”
Bobbi Gibb, first woman to finish the Boston Marathon, 1966
"Wicked fast runnah"
Seen at the Boston Marathon expo
“When I go to the Boston Marathon now, I have wet shoulders – women fall into my arms crying.
They’re weeping for joy because running has changed their lives. They feel they can do anything.”
Kathrine Switzer, first woman to officially enter and run the Boston Marathon in 1967
"I saw the Prudential Center Tower from about two miles out, but for quite a while I thought it was a mirage.
I kept seeing it and I thought I'd never get there."
Neil Cusack, Ireland, 1974 Boston Marathon winner
"The body does not want you to do this. As you run, it tells you to stop but the mind must be strong.
You always go too far for your body. You must handle the pain with strategy...It is not age; it is not
diet. It is the will to succeed."
Jacqueline Gareau, 1980 Boston Marathon champ
"At mile 20, I thought I was dead. At mile 22, I wished I was dead. At mile 24, I knew I was dead. At
mile 26.2, I realized I had become too tough to kill."

"Marathoning is just another form of insanity."

FMRRC BANQUET RECAP
The FMRRC annual Banquet took place January 26th at Nicolino’s Restaurant in Amsterdam.
It was in many ways a year of firsts for the banquet. It was the first year the banquet was held in January instead
of the more traditional “day after the Stockadeathon” date. It was the first year in many years that the banquet was
not held at Sport Island Pub. And it was the first year in many years that the banquet had a guest speaker.
The speaker was John Geesler, a local running icon who runs ultramarathons with no more thought than most of
us give to a 5K race. He regaled the audience with tales of his trials, tribulations, and experiences in “ultra” running.
It was a real treat to hear his experiences and be able to ask him questions about running.
The meal was first rate - the menu was Chicken Francais, ziti, and salad - all delicious and served by the gracious
staff. It confirmed the restaurants reputation as one of the top local Italian restaurants. Thankfully some things don’t
change - after the meal the traditional “Cookies by Joyce” were served and vanished quickly.
After the dinner club awards and Grand Prix awards were given out, The only club award given was to Christine
Eaton as the Rookie of the Year. Her accomplishments - first overall woman at the 2014 Winter Wimp, taking firsts
at many other Grand Prix races in 2013, made her a truly deserving recipient. Doris Castle gave out Mileage
Challenge awards, Ray Lee, Julie Hudyncia, Ryan Hudyncia, and Stephen Montanaro earned mileage challenge
jackets, Shirley Hudyncia and Laura Milak earned 10,000 mile patches, and Bill Manning and Jake Smith earned
20,000 mile patches. Outgoing club president Ginny Mosher gave the Presidents Award to Bill Platt, which was a
complete surprise to me and for which I am truly thankful.
After some after dinner schmoozing the banquet came to an end and out we went into the cold January night leaving another enjoyable banquet as a fond memory.
