Hello Friends of Veterans;

with patriotism.
I had the honor to attend the return flight
ceremony for the Greater St. Louis Honor
Flight on June 23rd. This event, attended by
hundreds of well-wishers at the Southwest
terminal at Lambert Airport, was a sea of
red, white and blue and the place gushed with American pride.
The event on this night was the secret welcome home for 21
World War II and Korean War veterans who had just spent a
memory filled day flying to and from Washington, D.C. as part of
what the Honor Flight program does. When the soldiers began
making their way down the airports’ exit corridor towards baggage claim, they were surprisingly greeted by thunderous cheers,
joyous shouting, pats on the back and enthusiastic handshakes
from welcomers of all ages.
As part of their welcome, my
guest Kay Ward and I were honored to be asked to be flag holders so we had the opportunity to
welcome each veteran home as
they made their way past each
American Flag. I would be kidding myself and I'd be dishonest
if I didn't say this was an incredible honor that came to me; it was
as if we were taken back 70 years
when most of these heroes returned home from war. On this
night they were all glowing as I think many were sort of in shock
as not a single one knew they would experience this hero’s welcome. I saw smiles a mile wide, I felt handshakes of strength and
pride, and I saw tears of joy and probably witnessed a little instant remembrance of days gone by.
If you do the math, if a soldier was 17 in 1945, (some lied about
their ages) at the end of the war that would put the youngest honored veteran at 87, the oldest on this flight was 97. I heard that
most required wheel chairs when they exited the plane, until they
saw the sea of red, white and blue and some threw aside those

Thanks to all of you, thanks to friends and family members, this
year's Sailing for Veterans Regatta raised $7,500 for this great
organization. The Honor Flight chapter in St. Louis makes 10 of
these flights a year. I would strongly encourage you to just once,
experience and see for yourself the joy in these heroes faces as
they return home, possibly for the last time.

So you think you can dance? America’s Got Talent.
Or maybe you’re a fan of The Bachelor(ette)? These
are some fine examples of ways to waste weeknights
waiting for ….the weekend of Flying Scot Racing!
Though television and media outlets spend millions to
produce an hour of entertainment for our viewing
pleasure, no TV program can capture my attention, or
hold my focus or give me the motivation (Read: the
High) to make it through another work week, like getting ready for a travel regatta. There are few better
ways to spend a weekend with my wonderful wife,
Rachel, than to take a trip to race against our flying
scot family.
Rachel and I have traded in the high strung, on-themove, workaholic lifestyles for the stability of homeownership, a new home sailing club, and making a run
at the Midwest District Travel Trophy… OR at least
qualifying. Unfortunately for my odds of winning it,
but very fortunately for the sport and our class, there
will be some stiff competition. There are 5 qualifying
regattas: Eagle Creek, Lake Carlyle (Egyptian Cup),
Ephraim, WI, Sheridan Shores (Chicago) and Clinton
Lake (The Glow). Check the FSSA website for details:

- “Yeah,” says I “We’re headed to a big race
over in Indianapolis.”

-“Wow! I didn’t think NASCAR/Indy 500 was this
weekend”.
-“Oh, I don’t know anything about any car races. I’m talking FLYING SCOT Racing.”
Leaving straight from work, Team Wreckless hitched
up and made the trip to Eagle Creek. A quiet, cozy
(read: narrow) lake northwest of Indianapolis, was a
quick 4 hour drive up I-70. Though we arrived around
10:30pm local time, a few couples were up still telling
lies and enjoying the clear, starry sky from the pavilion deck chairs.
The morning broke with breakfast put on by kind volunteers and, with the boat rigged and splashed, I started interviewing the locals for any helpful secrets as to
how we might take advantage of the ominous cove
vortex phenomenon. In short, we learned that if we
could sail out of the harbor, it would literally be
smooth sailing. Indeed, getting to the main water body
of the lake takes you through a narrow pass, dotted
with flat bottomed fishing boats and your odd kayaker,
as well as swirling wind. It was an excellent warm up
leaving the docks. On the same heading, we found
ourselves close hauled on starboard, becoming a
reach, jibe and in irons within 50’. We enjoyed the
warm up sail, and soon enough, were out and running
through our pre-race checks.
Racing got started with a once around and, outside of
misjudging that I was OCS when in fact I wasn’t, we
did fairly well upwind, losing a few boats in the cove
vortex near the windward mark. The second race, a
twice around, we pushed a little further away from the
center of the course to the left, when the right side
paid off big. In that race, approaching the windward
mark, a dark sky hovered.

At first, a fine, warm summer rain brought humidity to
100%. Quickly that warm summer feel left us as a
“big-ol fat rain” and “rain that seemed to jump up
from underneath” pelted us. In my cotton polo, I was
certain that the temperature dropped 30 degrees. Of
course the wind speed spiked. As most boats had yet
to round the mark, sails luffed and boats heeled. For
those front runners who already had their chutes up for
the downwind leg, the downdraft gave them a ride to
remember. Frank (FS6060) said they couldn’t get to
the back of the boat quick enough. And if it hadn’t
blown by, they would have ended up on the rocks
downwind of the leeward gate marks. Suffice it to say,
we had barely rounded the mark and they were rounding the gate. In a bit of bitter news, we discovered on
our downwind leg, that Deb Aronson and Ben Williams had been de-masted on their run. The race committee clocked upwards of 40kts peak wind-speed during the squall. Just as quickly as it came, the dark
clouds left, the rain quit and the sun and 7-12mph
winds came back out to play.
The race committee set up for 2 more races. Our third
race was relatively uneventful; I think there was a general recall in there somewhere. But our fourth race
was remarkable. Seeing pressure to the right, the pin
significantly forward of the committee boat, and a port
tack favored line, Rachel and I charged the pin and
tacked right as the gun sounded. Very few tacks later,
we were rounding with the leaders, as in them and us!
Working hard downwind, we were set to gybe to port
to head back to the gate when I disbelievingly watched
the spinnaker pole soar vertically. With the pole skied,
the boat heeled as we wrestled to bring the errant sail

under control. Without the leverage to make the pole
see reason to come down, Rachel blew the sheet and I
eased the main to turn downwind, but the boat didn’t
turn. The main loaded, the boat heeled and we spun
towards weather, until the soaring spinnaker gained
the upper hand and pulled the boat over. We were
swimming before we knew we were wet. Rachel
swam to the centerboard and I eased the halyard tension and swam to the top of the mast to pull the sails
down. The safety boat crew from Eagle Creek was
very attentive and helpful. I handed them the mast
from the water and the boat came right up. Turns out
that (1) an empty boat + (2) the chute up = (3) picks
up speed pretty quick. The jettisoned Wreckless crew
struggled to get back aboard and accepted a tow back
to the harbor for dinner, beer and more lies.
After a wonderful helping of BBQ, we enjoyed a bit of
acoustic guitar and relaxed in the sunny summer evening. I particularly enjoyed visiting with the young
newlyweds (Carrie and Tyler) and shared a few tales
of how we met our sailing spouses. As the evening
continued, a spontaneous suggestion for home-style
farm raised creamery captured our attention and a convoy of vehicles quickly departed the club. Over scenic
country roads, we soon arrived at a beautiful farm
where we partook of root beer floats, sundaes, caramel
drizzled turtle and other delectable desserts. We all
settled into a bit of a circle on the heaviest driftwood
chairs I’ve ever moved, and conversation shifted to
discussion about this incredible sailing class, what
makes evenings like these so spectacular, and the people that have gravitated to the Flying Scot design.

CSA Y-Flyer Fleet 56 to hold Beer and Boats Regatta August 8 and 9
The Y-Flyer fleet will hold its annual Beer and Boats Regatta at CSA on August 8 and 9. If you
have a Y, or can borrow one, join us for a great time. Three races are scheduled for Saturday
and two more on Sunday morning. We will be doing a pot luck dinner on Saturday evening at
the pavilion. Bring a dish to share and we will be providing Burgers and Brats. Hopefully the
water levels are back to normal by then, but we will hold the regatta regardless (unless the
park is closed due to flooding).

WOW –Women On the Water Attend Midwest Women’s Conference in Milwaukee
There were 7 of us from the WOW group this year that went to Midwest Women’s Conference in Milwaukee in May. Classes covered a multitude of topics as we could select 4 classes each. Topics such as what
to have in your toolbox, basic electricity, cruising Lake Michigan, reading weather conditions, proper docking,
and so much more.
Patti Davis, Joy Bode, Pinar Coonan, Linda Ditzler, Joyce Rogers, Jerri Franklin, and Tracy Grass rode in two vehicles stopping at
Starved Rock, IL on the way up for lunch. We
learned a lot and had a great time, so we decided we would meet again June 2nd to share our
knowledge while on Tracy Grass's boat at Boulder Yacht Club. Tracy treated us to lunch and a
fun (chilly) sail on the lake.
Can't wait to see everyone again at the
Strawberry Regatta on August 1st.

CSA Pavilion. From the starting line you sail to the
Coles Creek mark (Red Line) and make a port
rounding. From the Coles Creek mark you proceed
to the Allen Branch (Blue Line) mark make a port
rounding then return to the Coles Creek mark
(Orange Line). You make a port rounding of the
Coles Creek mark (Green Line) and return to the
cabin fleet start finish line. See the drawing of the
course above.

2015 CSA Hare & Hound Racing
2015 Hare and Hound races will build on the success
the lake for an afternoon of racing with the emphasis on fun.
After the race, come back to the pavilion for the results and free
beverages. Plan to make a day of it by grilling out. How about
an evening sail too?
The proposed race course would remain the same for the entire 2015 season. The starts would be staggered so the slowest
boats, based on their PHRF number, would start first thus eliminating a crowded starting line. Scoring would be simple because a yacht’s finishing position would depend solely on when
she crossed the finish line in relation to the other competitors.
At 4:00 the results will be announced at the pavilion where all
can sit and enjoy complementary beer and soda while tall tales
are told of the days adventures. Sail 3 of the 5 and you qualify
for a H&H excellence award at the Commodores’ banquet!
The Skippers Meeting is at 10:00 AM (required)
The boat with the highest PHRF number will start at 11:00 PM.

that night, looking forward to another day of racing, I reveled in my good fortune. Though I wasn’t winning the regatta, and the heavy splat of raindrops began marching towards our shelter, I realized how lucky I had been to
choose the Flying Scot sailboat. It was the vehicle in which
I learned to sail, race one-design, but it’s also the class
whose members are the best of what makes us all human.
Somehow being an owner/sailor of this class is like gaining
a membership to an accepting group of hard working, kind,
and passionate individuals who allow you to be you and the
best that you can be. I know that each of us has our own
story of how we came to the fleet, grew as individuals and
became better sailors. I’d like to offer a special Thank You
to Ann, Dave and Tricia Bachelor, Pat and Alan Backus,
Ray Merrill, Jack Griffin, Amy and John Biddle, John
Kreidler, Carolyn and Joe Price, Stacy and Joe Brake, Brian Hampton, and all the teams, couples, families that made
a huge positive impact on my journey.

Do You Know …
that our forefathers, the signers of the Declaration of Independence, pledged their lives, their fortunes
and their sacred honor to each other and our new nation for the cause of liberty? To do all this, they relied on
their Creator for protection. While celebrating Independence Day this weekend, be sure to contemplate all
that your ancestors and fellow Americans have done and sacrificed for the liberty we all enjoy. A time may be
coming, and coming soon, when we will once again have to beat back tyranny to regain and retain the freedom we all desire. Here are some familiar lines from the beginning and end of the Declaration of Independence signed by 56 brave and determined Americans, July 4, 1776. On page 16 please find the lyrics to
“America, The Beautiful”, written by Katharine Lee Bates in 1913.
