Congratulations on choosing Spanish Language and Culture 10 and welcome! In this course, you will be
presented many opportunities to discover and enhance your skills in both the Spanish language and
Spanish culture. This is an introductory course intended for students who are beginning their study of
the language and culture. For some of you it is the very first time that you will be learning the Spanish
language and for others who already have some knowledge of Spanish from travel or a family/friend
connection to the culture, you have the opportunity to build on your skills as a beginner Spanish
speaker.
Spanish Language and Culture 10 is made up of four primary outcomes. Language Competency and
Applications , students will have the opportunity to learn four primary language skills (listening,
speaking, reading and writing) learn the Spanish alphabet followed by important phrases, verbs and
conversational basics. Students will then be able to read, write and speak simple Spanish words and
sentences. The following grammar rules will also be covered: nouns and pronouns, simple present tense,
simple past tense, simple future tense and some interjections.
This course will prepare students for Spanish Language and Culture 20.
Assessment
In this course, all of the eight competencies identified by Alberta Education are embedded within the
course material. We will formally assess two of these competencies throughout the year in Spanish
Language and Culture 10.

Course Materials and Resources
Students will be required to bring stationary such as a binder/notebook and writing utensils - preferably
a pen and a pencil. On top of these basic supplies, the following are necessary:
 Two folders
 Two packs of index cards
 Markers
 Positive attitude
Late Policy
All assignments (writing assignments, projects, portfolio, etc.) must be completed and are due at the
beginning of the class period on the assigned date. If you are not at school the day an assignment is due,
you must send the work through email by 3:30 the day it is due. The ONLY exception will be in
medical/personal situations where a parent or doctor note is required.
Technology Use
Spanish class will be a cell phone free zone. This means that students must keep their phones in their
backpack at all times. If a phone is used during class, the teacher will keep it for the duration of class.
Students will be required to access HomeTudor at home. If a computer is not available at home please
email me and we will make other arrangements.
