Editor-in-Chief’s message
Dear Comrades,
Happy New Year!
Looking back, 2014 was a certainly an eventful
and productive year for the Agency. Punggol
FSC was officially opened, while the satellite
FSCs in Teck Ghee and Yio Chu Kang turned
operational too.
Chairman, ED, Dr Ang (2nd from right) and Mr Gray
Congratulations to Dr Ang Seng Bin who was elected as
the Vice-President of National Council of Social Service
(NCSS) at their Annual General Meeting on 22th July
2014. Dr Ang succeeds Mr Cyril Chua, who held the
position from 2009 till 2014.
A Consultant Family Physician at KK Women and
Children’s Hospital, Dr Ang has been active in the social
service sector, serving as a volunteer for various causes
for the past 20 years. He has been in AMKFSC’s
Management Committee since 2013.
Do you know?
The office of Vice-President in
NCSS has been held by
members of AMKFSC’s
Management Committee since
2007.
Mr Michael Gray served in the
office from 2006 in his capacity
as Chairman of AMKFSC before
handing the baton over to Mr
Cyril Chua in 2009. Dr Ang then
succeeded Mr Cyril Chua in
2014.

Our very own Sin Yan wrapped up an amazing
year by winning the prestigious Promising
Social Worker Award. This award was given
out by President Tony Tan at the Istana. This is
the second year in a row where a social worker
from this Agency has received this highest
accolade. As you read on, you will find that we
consistently produced social workers of the
highest calibre.
Do you know who our past winners are?
Now, as I reflect on the past year, I attribute our
success to the three “P”s.
Our people - your unrelenting efforts in striving
to do your best have set the standard for many
others in our sector to emulate. It is not
uncommon when I have get enquiries from
people in the sector asking whether we have an
opening. Everyone wants to join a great team!
The positive attitude held by our staff. We are
not afraid to step up and get on the frontline.
For example, the folks at Transition Plus+ and
Comnet@Sin Ming face daily challenges as
they are embedded in a socially disadvantaged
neighbourhood. Yet, we firmly believe that our
work is an important one and we can help to
make a difference to the lives of the people we
serve.
The last “P” is place. A warm, nurturing and
non-discriminatory workplace to help our staff
settle and thrive in their work. The Agency is
more just a workplace, but really a second
home to many. I see friendships, camaraderie
and mutual support all around the various
centres. Many would know that I am not a
Liverpool fan. But the adage of “You’ll Never
Walk Alone” is true in AMKFSC too.
Dr Ang Seng Bin (Right)
Thank you for all your hardwork, support and
great teamwork in 2014. I am sure we will have
another fantastic year in 2015.
Dr Vincent Ng

About IRH’s
Community Day
First Community Day
started in 2013
Fully planned and

“The Free-style Boys” wowing audiences with their self-taught moves
Community Day in the heart of
Interim Rental Housing estate!
Children shuffling between numerous Fun Game Booths,
discussing among themselves on the best method to get the many
game prizes available. A series of enthralling performances on
show at the other end of the carnival, keeping audiences glued to
their seats.
A carnival in town? No, it was the annual Community Day, brought
into the heart of Interim Rental Housing estates in Ang Mo Kio.
From the planning to organisation and to execution, community
members came together in making the event possible. It was truly
an event for the community, by the community.
“The Mojojojojos” in action
Apart from the Fun Game Booths manned by elderly from COMNET and performances fully
planned and choreographed by children of IRH, a series of paintings were on display across the
void deck. The efforts by children from IRH brought insights on how the children felt about their
community, hence the theme – “My Community”.
As the afternoon wears on, the crowd browsed through brand new
clothing at the ‘Pasar Malam’ stall. Donated and managed by the
residents, the clothes are free for community members to keep. In
sharing what little abundance of clothing they have with their friends
and neighbours, it adds a personal touch to an already strong spirit of
camaraderie among them.

In what seemed like an instance, the Community Day drew to a
close. As the crowd dispersed from the void deck, children are still
chatting and feasting on the goodies they had won from the Fun
Game Booths. The Community Day event ended, but the friendship
and love of the community still lingers on.

BASIC Year-End
Concert

200-strong crown turn-out
for the event
All smiles with the success of BASIC Year-End Concert
Around-the-World with BASIC!
By the end of BASIC’s annual Year-End Concert, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of pride
parents had for their children.
This year’s concert aims to bring a 200-strong crowd of parents, caregivers and staff of AMKFSC on a
tour “Around the World” via a series of culturally diverse performances, fully planned and executed by
BASIC’s staff and children.
The concert kicked off with an award presentation for the children.
AMKFSC’s Chairman, Mr Cyril Chua presented awards to BASIC
children for their academic and behavioral improvements throughout
the entire year.
Our BASIC children in action
Audiences were then brought to Korea with an upbeat K-pop dance
before moving on to the United States, with the children grooving
along to the uplifting hit song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. The scene
was then transformed to China by a Chinese Wu Shu performance. The peculiar sight of petite
children showcasing their Wu Shu prowess left the audiences grinning from ear to ear.
A Malay “Kumpung” performance was then followed up by a dance
to the song “Around the World”. By then, the overwhelming
emotions of parents in the audience seats was evident with them
vocally cheering their children on.
A final performance brought the three BASICs together for a “WakaWaka” dance and towards the end of the performance, parents were
crowding by the stage, hoping to get up close with the performers.
The Emcee had to get the parents back to their seats before the
Deputy Director can deliver her appreciation to the parents and staff
of BASIC for a year of unwavering support.
Do you know which airline our little
emcee is from?
As the concert drew to a close, warmth and pride parents felt for their children filled the air. The
smiling faces of parents as their children rejoined them tells BASIC staff that they had attained what
they set out to do; strengthen the family bond of their clients.

Ms Lee Sin Yan—Recipient of 2014’s Promising Social Worker Award
Lee Sin Yan—AMKFSC’s winner of the
Promising Social Worker Award 2014
At just 27, Sin Yan knows the importance of providing relevant
platforms and resources to the people she came across in her life.
Since becoming a Social Worker in 2010, Assistant Senior Social
Worker, Lee Sin Yan understands that the efforts she put into her
work can provide better quality of life for her clients and their
families. “Social work is a career that is fulfilling, one where you
gain much more than you give.” said Sin Yan, and that is what kept
her motivated even through difficult situations.
Sin Yan was one of the two winners of the Promising Social Worker
Award (PSWA), an accolade given out by President Tony Tan at
the Istana to Social Work professionals for their dedication and
achievements in their respective fields.
Best wishes from President Mr Tony
Tan and Minister for Social and Family
Development Mr Chan Chun Sing
Apart from impacting the lives of her clients, Sin Yan was
instrumental in the development of the Bakery Hearts programme.
Actively reaching out to cafes, social enterprises and businesses in supporting the programme,
Bakery Hearts’ revenue grew more than six times between 2010 and 2013. Her dedication improved
the lives of numerous unemployed mothers from low-income families.
“I hope to continue engaging support from the community to expand the network of resources that can
be leveraged on to move the community forward.” said Sin Yan, noting that social service is a
continued effort.
Organised by the Singapore Association of Social Workers, the award is in its 15th year since its
inauguration in 1998.

Interview with Sin Yan
What made you decide to be a social worker?
The liberating experience I had when several people in my life believed in
me and gave me opportunities to realize my potential made me want to be
a social worker. I hope to bring similar experience to other by believing in
their inherent abilities and providing them with relevant platforms and
resources
What will you do now that you have won the PSWA?
“Social work is a
career that is
fulfilling where you
gain much more
than you give”
I will continue giving my best in working with the vulnerable towards a better
quality of life for themselves and their families. Contributing back to my
agency, the social work sector and profession is also what I look forward to
doing more of.
Why should young people consider Social Work as a career?
Social work is a career that is fulfilling where you gain much more than you give. You will be able to
learn from the resilience of the people you work with and be given opportunities to work on bridging
existing gaps in society to bring about greater quality. The development of your competence and
proficiency is also a journey of self-growth where you learn to leverage on your strengths and
improve on your weaknesses.
