2012 Annual Report
When Stan
Koppinger was
studying business at
the University of
North Dakota, he
met a five year old
who changed his life.
Stan was 20 years
old and Shawn lived
with his mom. They
met in 1974 through
a mentoring program
and the pair would
“do something –

Week,” Stan recalls.
“It forced me to know there’s more to life than just me and to
think more of others. I quickly knew it was the right thing.”
After college graduation Stan moved home to get a start in the
banking world. He remembers that Shawn was only 10 years old
when he rode the bus – alone – to visit Stan in New England. Their
friendship rekindled, they hiked the Badlands and found an
arrowhead. About eight years later, Stan proudly watched Shawn
graduate from high school. Then they lost touch.
“I always knew he’d be okay,” Stan said. “He was a bright
young guy, mature.”
In 2010, Shawn came through Dickinson. The 44 year old
computer analyst from Arizona looked up his lifelong friend and
mentor, now the president and CEO of American Bank Center. And
he asked: “Do you remember when we found that arrowhead?”
Since he met Shawn, Stan has worked to make a difference in the
lives of others. He said that mentoring “set the framework for me to
know that everyone can use that encouragement, friendship, help or
coaching.”
And Shawn? “He said I was the only brother he ever had,” Stan
said.
