Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Lakes Council 6318 • 10 Fair Street • Carmel, NY, 10512 • 845-225-6318 • www.kof6318.org LAKE CURRENT Editor: John Sullivan ([email protected]) October 2004 Grand Knight’s Message Dear Brother Knights, I would like to thank the Brothers who showed up on 9/11 to honor the memory of our fallen heroes "who gave their last measure of devotion that this nation under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that the government of the people shall not perish from the earth". These words are as true now as they were in 1863. 1119 days have past since evil reared its ugly head in America and there are those who choose to forget it. If this nation is to survive, we need to remember the past or it will repeat itself. It is with great sorrow that I announce the passing of Brother Thomas McKenna. Tom was a fine Knight and he will be missed. On September 25th, the Gold Star Mothers committee had their kick off meeting attended by our great Senator Liebell at our council and we contributed to this cause. Thanks to Michael McDonough, P.G.K., and Mario Antoci for getting us involved with this event. If enough funds are raised, Putnam will have the first statue in the country dedicated to the mothers who gave their children in our fight for liberty. I am very proud to announce that we chosen the Grand Marshal for the 2005 St. Patrick’s Parade. Thanks to the hard work of Russ Lavan, Neil Mulhern was selected as Grand Marshal. There is not enough space here to list what Neil has done for us. The Irish have an expression that best describes Mr. Mulhern—‘a great man’. October 8th the second degree will be held in Put Lake and on October 29th we will be have the 3rd degree in our council. Please come and support our future. We tried to have an Oktoberfest but not enough interest was generated to have it. My apologies to those who were looking forward to it. The Council will have an Italian night in early spring. Hopefully, we will get enough interest this time. The deadline for the annual is October22. I still do not have enough people yet to hold this event. Please call me or Lou Albano. The Columbus Day parade was a humiliation for this Council. My son and I marched on this beautiful day as the only representatives of this council. If we had a banner we would not have had enough to show our colors. This Council had intended to purchase a new banner which will not happen unless more members show interest in the parades. I thank the 4th Degree Color Corp who understood we are Knights of COLUMBUS and marched proudly, and Bill Richmond, our photographer at large who is always there to create publicity for this council. I know people are busy. I am busy also. We are Knights and with that come some responsibilities. It is not just words in a ceremony but a true and noble cause. We help people and we cannot do this without getting our message out. Our older members have done their duties in the past. The newer members need to step up to their obligations. We have good work to do and we need you now. I would like to thank Tony Porto who just made his first degree and is already taking his responsibilities seriously. He heard of a family in need, tracked down the info and brought it to me. We need more members like this brother. We remember our heroes here who have passed on this mortal coil and our heroes who are still on duty. We need to remember our duty for a Council that still has good work to do. Vivat Jesus ……….Mike McDonald Chaplain’s Corner Father Anthony Sorgie will be officially installed as our new pastor on Thursday evening October 21st at St. James the Apostle church. Watch the bulletin for details and let’s get the Knights out to show a tremendous support for our Chaplain and new pastor. If you have any topics or questions that you would like Father Sorgie to address in future issues, please do not hesitate to write or call him directly at St. James the Apostle/14 Gleneida Avenue/ Carmel, NY 10512/ 1-845-225-2079 x15. There is also some sad news once in a while, like the passing of a loved one that is worth sharing with your brother knights. If you have anything you wish to share you can e-mail me at [email protected] or pony express me at John Sullivan, 59 Marshall Drive, Carmel, NY 10512 or call me at 845-225-6265. Russ Williamson, a charter member and Past Grand Knight of 6318, and a former Conference District Deputy sent us the following note: I live in Barefoot Bay, FL where hurricane Frances recently passed through. My sister Virginia Watson, former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of 6318, also lives in the same mobile home community. We both survived the storm. She had minimal damage and I had more substantial damage to our homes. But we are still above the grass! Thanks to Russ Lavan and Mike McDonough I still receive the Lake Current and stay aware of the goings on. I have fond memories of the "Council" and familiar names, Mario Antoci, Marty Puchalski, George Dean, Lou DiVestea, Kevin McGuckian. Keep up the good work and stay well. Regards to all the "Brothers". If any of the other Florida brothers have any information on how they "survived" the worst hurricane season in Florida history, please drop a line or an email. Lake Current Mailings We currently have approximately 45 members receiving e-mail copies of the Lake Current but we are still mailing out over 300 bulletins. Come on down and join the technology generation. This is an easy way to divert a necessary council expense if we can get more cooperation. The process is easy. Just send me an e-mail at [email protected] requesting the change. New Lake Current Editor Brother Michael Stec has graciously volunteered to take over the writing, editing, and assembly of this newsletter from this point forward. This edition has been a combined effort for Mike and me so that he can get to know the process. The next edition will probably be all Michael. Please help him by sending information you want included in the lake Current to him at the council address or by e-mail to [email protected].
