PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Ever remember a time when mail
was fun to receive? Here is a program
where students will “go postal” over letter
writing. “The Jolly Postman Rides
Again” is a program that will instill a love
for the giving and receiving of letters in
children. The program is introduced with
the story “The Jolly Postman” as an
shared reading experience. “The Jolly
Postman” is an interactive story with pullout letters. The first stage of the program
consists of writing a letter to storybook
characters. Then they will address,
stamp, and postmark an envelope in a
student-made book.
The next exciting part of the program
happens in February, the students
receive their very own pen pal from a
neighboring city’s school. The “Jolly
Postman” comes on his bike to deliver
their first pen pal letter. Then, the pen
pals exchange a letter a week through
the School Board courier service. The
Pen Pal program is concluded when the
pen pals meet by taking a field trip to a
local park, picnicking and playing games
together.
The Final Phase of “The Jolly
Postman Rides Again” starts in April
around Easter and ends at the close of
the school year. The students write
letters to the rabbit “Felix”. A character
who travels the world in a pull-out letter
book series called “Letters from Felix.”
As the students learn about
Countries, our planet and peoples’
cultures all over the world, they write and
tell “Felix” all about their learning
adventures.
OVERALL VALUE
Wouldn’t you love to instill a love for
letter writing in your students? It is as
easy as 1, 2, 3.......
#1.. Learn how to write a friendly letter
to storybook characters.
#2.. Receive a pen pal to write to and
meet.
#3.. Finish the year writing to “Felix”,
the world traveling bunny! What
could be more fun!
One truly fascinating part of this
program is it involves not only my
students, but the students from another
school. It be developed for any
Elementary grade level, special needs
classes, and with any number of
students. This program is a studentinvolved, imaginative experience that will
not be easily forgotten.

MATERIALS NEEDED
The materials needed to facilitate
this program are well-loved books, letter
writing materials and an endless
imagination. Any favorite characters

DIRECTIONS
1. Find a teacher that wants to pen pal
with you. It can be someone in your
school, at a neighboring school, out
of state, or even out of country.
2. If your numbers don’t match, don’t
worry. Ask for the name of some of
their advanced or gifted students to
write two letters to two of your
students.
3. Start the week before Valentine’s
Day, in case of absent students.
Have the students make their
Valentine for their Pen Pal. Send
them in you school courier mail or
use the United States Post Office.
Enlist the help of your guidance
counselor, parent volunteer or
someone from the community to
arrive on their bike as the Jolly
Postman to deliver the Valentines
from their Pen Pals. I had my Jolly
Postman also share a story about
how the mail gets from place to
place.
4. Write a big book about the Jolly
Postman’s visit. Take pictures and
write “thank you” letters to the Jolly
Postman.
5. Then weekly send pen pal letters to
your Pen Pal Partner Class.
6. During the program, take a field trip
to the Post Office.
7. At the end of the program, set up a
mutual field trip to a local park to
meet their pen pals for a picnic.
