NEWSLETTER #6
JANUARY 26, 2017
Secretary:
Trustee: Katrina Chen
Rae Shuster
[email protected]
Happy New Year! What a snowy winter we have had so far and with that,
tremendous amounts of fun creating forts, building snowmen and sledding. I
am so proud of our students staying safe through the snowy and icy
conditions.
We are just completing an exciting Literacy Week full of many activities such
as Family Tic-Tac-Toe, Buddy Reading, “mystery guests” reading a special
book with classes, teacher swaps and a whole school READO activity. These
activities are in addition to the many literacy activities taking place regularly
in the classrooms. On January 31st at 1:30 we will culminate Family Literacy
Week at our assembly. Please join us if you can, it is a jam-packed, exciting
Celebration of Learning.
Have you heard of bucket filling? In the next few weeks
we are going to be starting a whole school initiative on
“bucket filling” to help increase our school culture of
kindness. The ‘bucket’ is a symbol that represents a
person’s mental and emotional self. When people say
and do kind things, it fills your bucket and helps you feel
happier, more confident, secure and calm. When people
say or show unkind actions, it dips into your bucket and
negatively affects your level of happiness. The goal is to
have the staff and students at Montecito realize the
impact their words and actions have on others and
become bucket fillers. We hope that this concept and
language will carry over at home too. If your child does
something nice, gives you a compliment, helps around
the house or makes you smile, let them know their positive
behaviour has filled your bucket.
The newsletter is filled with many activities that make this school a busy and fun place for our
students. In this edition, you will see the first publications in our new “Author’s Corner”. Thank-you
to Division 8 for sharing your wonderful writing! It truly is a great privilege to be part of this
amazing school community!
Respectfully,
Mrs. Heather Kimmie – Principal

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE:




Clothing should be appropriate for an elementary school learning environment.
Runners which mark the floor are NOT ALLOWED in the gym.
As we live in a rainforest, students need to wear rain protective outerwear and foot wear.
Unless the weather is severe or dangerous, all children will be expected to spend some time
outside for fresh air and exercise. We do send children outside on rainy days when it is not a
downpour. If students go out and a downpour begins, 2 bells will ring indicating that students
should enter the school and go straight to their classroom. Supervisors will monitor students,
both in the main building and the portables.
We encourage students to have a label in their belongings. Our Lost and Found has many
unclaimed items.
STOPPING THE SPREAD OF COLDS AND FLU
The best way to prevent the spread of germs is to WASH YOUR HANDS and keep germs
away!!
The UBC Department of Pharmacy suggests:
The BEST TIME to wash your hands is:
Before eating or touching food
After using the bathroom
After blowing your nose or coughing
After touching pets or other animals
After
playing
outside

MONITORS OF THE MONTH
ALI HOSSEINI – DIVISION 4
Ms Quan said: Ali stepped in to fill another monitor’s place when they left. He is so
cheerful and friendly with the students. He often organizes quiet games and activities
for them, and has been such a welcome addition to the monitoring team.
Thank you, Ali, for stepping up when you were needed! Our school is a better place
with people like you!
NATASHA PICCOLO & SAAYA REICHEL – DIVISION 5
Ms Peters said: Natasha and Saaya always remember to come at recess to help the
kindergarten students get ready for recess and to help them outside. They have been
extra helpful since the snowy weather started by helping the students put on boots,

Thank you Natasha and Saaya for being so responsible and dependable! We appreciate your help!

COMMUNITY INFORMATION
BURNABY PUBLIC LIBRARY
READING BUDDIES: Information for Parents
What is Reading Buddies?
Reading Buddies is a reading program where teens and children are paired up for one-on-one reading in a safe, fun
and friendly environment. Younger children will gain practice reading with a caring teen mentor. Teens will develop
leadership experience and community involvement. Each child will be paired with a teen who likes to read and has
attended a training workshop provided by the library. Reading will take place in the children's area and the program
room. Each session will be supervised by a librarian.
Please note: Reading Buddies is NOT a tutoring service. Our teen readers are neither trained nor expected to
correct learning problems or teach children how to read.
Who are the Little Buddies?
Children who are in grade 2, 3, or 4. They must live in Burnaby or attend school in Burnaby. All reading levels
welcome!
Is my child expected to attend all five sessions?
Yes! Children are expected to attend all five sessions. This is a popular program. If you’re not sure you will be in
town during these weeks, please do not sign up and instead wait for another session in the coming months.
Who are the Big Buddies?
Burnaby teens who are in grade 10, 11 or 12.
What will the Buddies do?
Teens will listen and encourage your child in their reading practice, and help select reading material appropriate to
their interests and reading level. After reading for approximately 30 minutes, they will return to the program room
for a short group activity.
