The Indian Removal Act of 1830 • The act was created so southerns could have more land for cotton plantations, in other words; the southerns saw the native Americans as an obstacle that needed to disappear • The Indian Removal act of 1830 gave president Jackson the ability to negotiate with Native American tribes living east of the Mississippi River, the Native Americans were to give up their land east of the Mississippi for land west of the Mississippi, and whoever did not leave would become a citizen of the state • The act was meant to be a peaceful deal, however for the southeastern nations, they resisted and were eventually forced out, for example most of the Cherokee refused to leave, so 7,000 soldiers were sent to force them to, they began the journey known as the trail of tears, and 4,000 Cherokee members died.
