Cork at a glance
The people of Cork are friendly, colourful and garrulous.
Culture
Quality of life
Cork was designated European Capital of Culture
in 2005. It is the Festival Capital of Ireland and its
cultural heartbeat.
Cork’s quality of life credentials will not be
surpassed. The city is intimate, friendly and
cosmopolitan. It has all the elements necessary
for an active social life.
Every year, Cork hosts acclaimed and long
running events such as the International Jazz
Festival, the International Film Festival, the
International Choral Festival, the Midsummer
Festival and “Live at the Marquee” Festival to
name but a few.
Cork is passionate about sport and has huge
participation levels in soccer, hurling, Gaelic
football and rugby. Cork is the second largest
natural harbour in the world and hosts the full
range of water-based pursuits including sailing,
surfing, water skiing and diving.
Education
Team building
Cork has a wide range of outstanding primary
and secondary schools which figure prominently
in national education awards on a regular basis.
Already, many companies have seen the value
of some of Cork City’s nearby attractions for
team building, staff incentives and bonding.
The recent economic success of Cork has been
made possible through the presence of some
of Ireland’s most prestigious educational and
research institutions: University College Cork,
Tyndall National Institute, Ireland’s largest ICT
and life sciences research centre and The Cork
Institute of Technology.
Outdoor centres in Oysterhaven and Ballyhass
as well as the Ocean to City boat race engage
local and multinational companies on a regular
basis.

O’Callaghan Properties
O’Callaghan Properties was established in 1969 and is one of
Ireland’s most successful privately owned property development
and investment companies with commercial, retail and
residential projects throughout Ireland.
W
The second phase of the project has been
designated as a Major Retail Centre. This will
involve a major extension to the shopping
centre and the provision of town centre facilities,
residential units and office accommodation.
We also recently completed the Mahon Point
mixed use development in Cork. Mahon Point is
an edge of town Retail led development and its
principal elements include a 150,000 ft2 retail
park, a 350,000 ft2 shopping centre, an office
park and residential units.
We are also involved as stakeholders in the
Clonburris Strategic Development Zone (SDZ).
The Government designated the majority of the
Clonburris lands (c. 180 hectares) as an SDZ
in July 2006. South Dublin County Council
finalised a Planning Scheme for the SDZ
portion of the lands in 2008. The proposed
Plan is intended to facilitate the development
of 8 new neighbourhoods which together may
accommodate up to 16,000 new homes and
associated community facilities and up to
600,000 ft2 of net retail floorspace.
e recently completed a total of
600,000 ft2 of retail, residential
and high specification offices in
Opera Lane and Half Moon Street
in Cork city centre, Ireland’s second largest
city. Both of these developments opened in
October 2009 and include tenants such as Top
Shop, H & M, New Look, Next, Boots and Gap.
It has been widely acknowledged that both
developments contributed significantly to the
urban regeneration of Cork city centre.
The shopping centre and retail park were
opened in 2005 and include tenants such as
Debenhams, Tesco, Boots, Next, Zara and B & Q.
We developed a similar project on a 180 acre
site at Liffey Valley, Dublin in partnership with
Grosvenor Estates. The shopping centre element
was opened in 1998 and has been a huge
success to date. The project currently consists
of a 500,000 ft2 shopping centre, 100,000 ft2 of
office space, two retail parks, hotel, crèche and
motor mall.
We have developed a number of other mixed use
projects around Ireland including the Merchants
Quay Centre, The Paul Street Centre and the North
Main Street Centre in Cork, the Golden Island
Shopping Centre in Athlone, the Carlow Shopping
Centre in Carlow and the Arthurs Quay Shopping
Centre in Limerick.
We are also major house builders, having
completed approximately 6,000 units to date. We
currently have a land bank for a further 1,500 units.
