Five bands of Hz0 occurring in the 6950-7500 cm-i region were recorded with a vacuum
infrared spectrometer
with spectral resolution of 0.07 cm-i. Measurements
and quantum assignments are given and upper-state
levels are determined. Two of the bands, (101) and (021),
The three other bands,
are type A with origins at 7249.811 and 6871.51 cm-i, respectively.
(200), (002), and (120), are type B with origins at 7201.540, 7445.07, and 6775.10 cm-i,
respectively.
INTRODUCTION
An experimental investigation
of the line positions and strengths of water vapor in
the region 6900-7500 cm-r was undertaken using a vacuum, grating spectrometer. The
present study involves the determination
of the line center frequencies of the vibrationrotation transitions of the five H,O bands in this spectral interval and the determination
of the rotational levels of the five states: (lOl), (200), (021), (120), and (002). A forthcoming publication will present the results of the Hz0 line strength measurements.
Several of the upper-state levels are perturbed by resonance effects. The interactions
involve either Fermi coupling of the near-resonance
levels of the states: (lOl)-(021),
(120)-(ZOO), (120)-(002), and (200)-(002); or Coriolis coupling of the near-resonance
levels of the states: (lOl)-(200),
(lOl)-(002),
(lOl)-(120),
(021)-(200,) (021)-(120),
and (021)-(002). These effects cause the mixed upper-state levels (line positions) to be
displaced from their respective unperturbed locations and cause mixing of the transition
intensities arising from the common lower-state level to the interacting upper levels.
EXPERIMENT&
The spectra were obtained with a 1.8 m Jarrel-Ash grating spectrometer. The grating
was a 300 line/mm-’ Bausch and Lomb replica having 20 cm of usable width and blazed
at 5.7 pm in first order. The Hz0 line positions were calibrated from lines of the 2~~ + va
and VI + 2~2’ + USbands of N,O (1) by observing the N,O lines in second order and the
Hz0 lines in third order of the grating. Further calibration was done by observing the
2.9 pm HtO lines (2,3) in first and second order and the 1.4 pm Hz0 lines in second and
fourth orders, respectively. The estimated accuracies of the line center measurements
were: 0.007 cm-’ for unblended lines and between 0.01 and 0.015 cm-r for blended,
resolved lines and very weak, observed, and unblended absorptions. The spectral resolution in the 1.4 pm region was -0.07 cm+.

Sample pressures ranged from 1 to 9 mm of Hg, and paths, from 8 to 32 m. A multitransversal cell of 2 m base length was used for all measurements. The foreoptics, source,
and PbS detector were housed in a vacuum box that was connected to the vacuum
spectrometer’and
the absorption cell. All measurements
were obtained for the Hz0
sample at room temperature.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Table 1 is a listing of the measured line center frequencies, upper- and lower-state
rotational quantum numbers (J K-r Kr), ground-state energy levels, line strengths, and
band assignments. The line numbers given in the first column in Table 1 pertain to the
numbering of the Hz0 absorptions shown in Fig. 1. Values of the ground-state
energy
levels were taken from the work of Flaud and Camy-Peyret
(3), The line strengths, S’,
given in Table 1 were calculated from the expression

frequency, E” is the ground-state energy level, k is Boltzmann’s constant, Q is the rotational partition function (173.7 at 295 K), and vO is the band center frequency. The
expression for the line strength, S, measured from spectra involves additional terms in
Eq. (1) such as S,, the vibrational band strength; L, the rigid-rotor transitionintensity;
and F, a factor which accounts for the nonrigidity behavior of the molecule and is a
function of the rotational transition.

The rotational
and assignments
analysis
of the five bands was aided with a listing of the line positions
of H,O in the 1.4bm
region
from
the unpublished
work
of Benedict
(4). Also a similar
and more complete listing is given by Garing and McClatchey (5).
The values of the line positions for several lines given in this work differ from those
given in Refs. (4) and (5) and the maximum difference is 2.4 cm-l for ground-state
transitions to the 918 level of the (200) state.
Tables 2 and 3 list values of the energy levels of the (lOl), (200), (021), and the (002),
(120) states, respectively. The wavelength coverage of this work did not extend far
enough to observe the 000-101 transition of the (021) band or several transitions of the
(120) and (002) bands. Values of the energy levels given in Tables 2 and 3 were determined from the measured line positions and values of the ground-state levels (3).
Several of the lines appear much stronger
than would be expected considering
only
their respective unperturbed
line strengths. For example, the strength of the transition,
652-735 of the (021) band (line No. 152) is enhanced by a factor of -800 because of a
strong Fermi interaction of the (021) level with the 634 level of the (101) state (line
No. 154). An example of Coriolis interactions is shown in Fig. 1 for line No. 631 given
as the transition, 615-542 of the (002) band which is enhanced by a factor of -200
because its upper level is located only 5.25 cm-’ from the position of the 643 level of the
(101) state (line No. 621). The transition strengths of both (101) lines given above are
deenhanced such that the sum of the observed line strengths
equals the sum of the calculated, unperturbed line strengths.
