Do you know what a bobcat looks like? Bobcats are usually gray,
black, red, and orange. They can be white, spotted, and they have a bobbed
tail. They are usually
really fuzzy and brown.
Do you know
where bobcats live?
Bobcats live in thickets
(thorns). They live in
the USA and Mexico.
They like the woods,
swamps, and sometimes
deserts. They might used abandoned dens for babies or make a den under a
log or in a cave.
Have you ever wondered what a bobcat eats? A bobcat eats squirrels,
rabbits, mice, birds and some times deer. They stalk their prey. Then they
pounce and attack the prey by surprise. They hunt at night.
Do you know about bobcat’s babies? Bobcat babies are called kittens.
They have a litter from one to six. They’re usually born in the summer.
They start eating meat at two months. They leave their home at four months
old.
The predators of bobcats are foxes, owls, wolves and mountain lions.
Owls, wolves and foxes can eat the babies and mountain lions can eat babies
and adults. Bobcats can climb trees to escape a battle but if cornered they will
fight fiercely. People are their biggest danger. People trap them for their fur.
Bobcats are very interesting creatures. The scientific name for a bobcat
is “lynx.” Bobcats got their name from their bobbed tail. They live alone
until their babies leave.
They mark their territory
from one to twenty-five
square miles. Bobcats
sharpen their claws on
trees. They are good
climbers. Bobcats puff out
their fur in the winter to
keep warm.
