In Reading, your child will learn to:
 Read fluently, accurately and with expression
 Read and understand 3rd grade Fiction
 Find the answers to specific questions within a story
 Retell stories from diverse cultures
 Figure out the lessons or morals of stories read
 Describe characters in stories and explain how their actions affect the story
 Figure out what an author really means by the words and phrases that are
written
 Understand the difference between literal and nonliteral language
 Write and talk about fiction by using the words for the different parts ( scene,
chapter, stanza)
In Social Studies, your child will learn to:
 Explain the political roots of our modern democracy in the United States
 Identify the influence of Greek architecture (Columns on the Parthenon, U.S.
Supreme Court building)
 Explain the ancient Athenians’ idea that a community should choose it’s own
leaders
 Compare and contrast Athens as a direct democracy with the United States as
a representative democracy
 Discuss the lives of Americans who expanded people’s rights and freedoms
in a democracy (Paul Revere, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Mary
McLeod Bethune, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Cesar Chavez)
In Science, your child will learn to:
 Investigate how heat is produced and the effects of heating and cooling, and
will understand a change in temperature indicates a change in heat
 Investigate magnets and how they affect other magnets and common objects
 Investigate the habitats of different organisms and the dependence of organisms on their habitat
 Recognize the effects of pollution and humans on the environment

In Language, your child will learn to:
 Explain how nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs work in different
sentences
 Say, write, and use all types of plural nouns correctly
 Capitalize beginning words and proper nouns, as well as those in titles
 Say, write, and use regular and irregular verb tense correctly
 Make sure subjects, verbs, and pronouns are in agreement when writing a sentence
In Math, your child will learn to:
 Compare numbers using the >,<,= symbols
 Round numbers using a number line
 Complete multiplication equations using identity, associative, commutative, and
distributive property
 Complete division equations
 Understand the numerator and denominator when working equations involving
fractions
 Understand place value up to the ten thousands place
