July 2012
The HEAT is on!
Yes summer is here, and along with the
heat so are the mosquitoes! Please
consider bringing in a can of repellent
for us to spray on you child before they
go out to play each day! Our playground
is being sprayed approximately every 2
weeks to keep the pesky critters away,
but unfortunately the rainy weather is
working against us.
Our Pre-K graduates put on quite the
show at their graduation on the
7th. It was standing room only, and
the parent paparazzi nearly overwhelmed all of our stars dressed in
cap and gown. It's hard to imagine
that in less than two months they
will be entering Kindergarten.
How fast they grow!
This summer our preschool classrooms
are all enjoying their Imagination Vacations and our Oakland Campers have
been having a blast on field trips to a
different fun destination everyday!

You may
see some
familiar
faces in
different
rooms over the summer as the teachers
take some much
deserved vacation
time. Please know if
you have any concerns, it is best to
address them right
away. We welcome
your input.

Great Beginnings
We hope all of our Fathers and
Grandfathers had a wonderful
Father’s Day!
Wow, Summer is here! It’s amazing
how fast the school
year has gone by. In
July we will be reading books, working on
our fine motor skills,
along with learning
our colors, shapes
and numbers. Even
though summer is the
time for rest and
relaxation, our babies
are not giving the
accomplishments a
break! Aniyah is taking steps!! Pretty
soon she’ll be walking, and we can’t
wait. Catherine has joined her friends
sleeping on mats and she loves it!
Ca’leah has adjusted wonderfully. She
loves her friends, teachers and school
in general. Veneila has formed a really
special bond with Ms. Gaby, she loves
her! Carley has visited the Little
Learners, and is truly enjoying herself! Easton is really enjoying eating
table food, and is working on drinking
from a sippy cup. Sarah is exploring
sounds. You have to hear her
whistle...It's the cutest thing ever!
And little Miss Renee loves to be
hugged and talked to. She’s also
starting to take a liking to tummy
time. We would like to say congratulations to all of our little achievers, we
are very proud of you! — Ms. Denise
Commet allez-vous?
means How are you?
The Little Learners
are having a ball with
our French theme. We
have been busy counting cars, sight seeing
and learning French
words. Kailey &
Erlandie took their
time as they painted
our transportation art
and Joshua & Malik
were busily making our highway. All
month we will be focusing on French
culture. The class will taste French
foods, take a bike tour, fly kites and
strut their stuff during our fashion
show. We would like to welcome Lucas
to our class and look forward to
learning with him. Please remember
our Water Play Wednesdays, and
make sure your child has all the
supplies they need, each day. This
includes a change of clothes that are
weather appropriate. Thank you!

Hawaii. We have
started exploring the
Hawaiian culture by
building tiki huts and
making our own
“beach in a bottle”.
We have also traced
the letter H and
discussed what sound
it makes. We are
discussing the animals
and foods of Hawaii
daily and continue to
be impressed with everything the
children are remembering! We have
experimented with objects that sink
or float too. It was interesting to see
those little minds hard at work. We
have learned what “Aloha” means and
the children are using it more and
more each day. In July we will be
talking about some Hawaiian foods,
and we'll be making a fruit salad. We
will also explore the taste of Spam
and pineapple! We are having such a
terrific time learning all these new
things with your child. Our
“Imagination Vacation” is off to a
great start! Mahalo!

Shining Stars
Hola, Como Estas? J As we continue our Mexican
theme this summer we are learning lots of exciting
things about the culture and traditions. We were able
to transform our classroom with Mexican inspired
creations. Aiden H. really enjoyed creating Mexican
fireworks while Kayori and Justin loved cutting out
the Mexican quilt. We made maracas and used them
in our Mexican parade. Logan loved the festival we
had as we tasted Mexican snacks and viewed pictures
of schools in Mexico. Each week we'll be learning different Spanish words and numbers and we are proud
to announce that our Shining Stars are learning math
in Spanish! We are all just TOO excited about this!!
J Jahziah and Reagan enjoy doing Spanish math
problems at circletime. In July we will continue
to go more in depth as we write words in Spanish
and learn colors in Spanish. As always, feel free
to stop by anytime and remember, every
Wednesday is Water Play Wednesday! Adios!
—Ms. Stephanie
Super Stars
Welcome to our summer pre-vpk class, the Super
Stars! With summer already kicked off to an outstanding start our Super
Stars are having some great learning fun! Kaciann, Roman and Jermiyah are
working very well on addition, Nathaniel has mastered writing his first and
last name and "buddies" Dylan and Nikkolis love building some pretty neat
train stations. Our class has set a goal this summer to read 100 books!
When its story time the children are so eager to listen and so excited to add
another book to our list "Reading our way to 100 books". Parents or family
members are always welcome to come in and read a story to your super star
and their class this summer. The children have been working on their very
own alphabet book and with each letter there is a new song. Ask them to sing
the new letter song they learned, I'm sure you will have a few giggles listening to the tongue twisting songs! Water play
Wednesdays are our most favorite days, the
children love to splash around with their fellow
classmates and our new summer VPK friends. My
goal is to teach your child the essential skills in a
fun and hands-on way for a successful transition
into our VPK program in August. We will dissect
letters and letter sounds, basic addition and subtraction, learn and explore all things surrounding
us and work on our writing skills. Even though it's
only a few weeks into summer I can already tell
that each of my super stars are extremely smart
and so ready to continue learning. We're looking
forward to a lot more learning and fun throughout
the summer.

Summer VPK
June has been a very exciting
month in VPK. We've had a
chance to meet many new friends,
and we took a “trip to the beach”,
where we had an indoor “beach
day”; we used umbrellas, beach
balls, and had water play. We also
Independence Day and will be
learning all about the American
Flag. We are also learning about
the season of summer, summer
colors, and summer weather.
The Summer Olympics are
being held in London this
visited the zoo where we discussed various animals. On June
15th, Oakland had our Annual
Dads and Donuts event. Thanks to
all the dads who came and ate
breakfast with us. Looking ahead,
for July, we are celebrating
year, and in its honor we will
spend an entire week learning
about the different sports played,
creating our own medallions, and
participating in our own “Olympic
Games.” During the last weeks of
Summer VPK we will be taking a
June 2012
trip to Hawaii, learning all about
their food, culture, traditions,
and their native plants and
animals. Our “Hawaiian Luau” will
be held August 3 from 10-1pm.
Parents are invited to come and
celebrate the end of VPK with us
“Hawaiian” style. See you there!

Thank You:
4th of July:
We would like to thank all of the
parents who have turned in their child’s
VPK certificate for the fall. We are
happy to say that our 3 VPK classes are
almost full! We’re glad the online
appointments went
smoothly for everyone.
We can’t wait to get
started on August 20th!
Camp Oakland
What a great start to Camp Oakland.
Our VPK graduates have picked up our
camp routine very nicely, just a few
reminders... Please make sure your
child has an extra set of clothes in
their cubby in case of soiled clothing. (Place them in a large zip lock bag
labeled with their name please.) Of
course our veteran campers are also
having blast. Alyiah and Ivanna have
been working on their Bowling skills,
A'mya, Laila, and Sean have been
practicing their swimming skills during
pool days. Dajah and Maurice have
shown their creative side at Joe
Picasso’s pottery experience. They
created nice pieces of art work on
their tiles that should be going home
with them
soon. We all
enjoyed going
to the Kids
Hub in Sawgrass for the
first time. It
was especially
welcome since
it is an indoor
playground
rather then
being out in
the summer sun. Another fun-filled
field trip was the Davie Pro Rodeo. We
were all amazed by the live bull riding,
but I don't think anyone enjoyed the
rodeo more than Gabby and Tyler as
Tiana & Tabitha stay cool at the
water park

Please note that Oakland Academy
will be closed on Wednesday, July
4th. The children
will be celebrating
on the 3rd so
please dress your
child in red, white
or blue, or all three
they cheered along with the crowd
and sang along to the music.
We are all looking forward to the
trips in July and making memories
that will last a lifetime. Remember
the ice cream truck
comes to Oakland
every Monday with
treats for $1.50. Also,
snack packs are available on Wednesday
movie days for $5.75.
These are voluntary
options, and are often
a great reward for
good behavior.
