A Stewardship Parish, celebrating 72 years as a faith community Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Friends, This weekend we are pleased to welcome the Little Sisters of the Poor. They were founded by St. Jeanne Jugan, an 18th century French nun. She heard the call to serve the poorest of the poor. In 1839 at the age of 47, she first brought home a blind and destitute woman and began to care for her. Then she took in more abandoned poor, some near death. A couple of giving women joined her and were drawn to minister to those poor, helping Jeanne to bathe, comfort and feed more and more residents. Jeanne and her followers became a new religious community. A spiritual director was appointed and Jeanne elected as superior. They funded their ministry through door to door asks—for food, money, clothing, household items—sometimes they were successful, other times not. Then there was a complication. Jeanne was elected superior again, but the spiritual director nullified that and sent her into early retirement. There is much that could be written, more than could fit here about the injustice that was done. She did not protest, but accepted with humility and charity. Eventually, after her death, the truth came out about the injustice and the spiritual director was sent to a monastery to do penance and prayer for the rest of his life. She was not only a person of obvious humility, but also one of wisdom and strength in the face of adversity. She did not want to jeopardize the community’s future, so she focused on her tasks and powerful prayer to help joyfully support the Sister’s mission from behind the scenes. At the time of her death there were 2500 sisters in 5 countries. Now their great works are world-wide. They have been a fixture here in Cincinnati for years, doing tremendous work. The Sisters are here this weekend (2/25–26) to collect for their ministry at our Masses. I know you will be as generous as you can to help support their great works of mercy. When we support them, we too are helping to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and visit and tend to the sick and dying. Please keep their ministry in your prayers, as well. God Bless you all, Fr. The Crosses are Coming! The 4,000 crosses are coming! Saturday, March 11. We ask ALL people of IHM to come help put in the Cemetery of the Innocents crosses at 10:30 a.m. We are always done by 12 noon, and, with a good showing, by 11:30 a.m. But we need many hands on deck! Refreshments are served in the portico. The Cemetery represents the number of babies lost to abortion every day in our country. The display needs to be removed Friday, March 24, and we welcome adult help for Brother Ed’s students, who take the crosses down after noon Mass. Thanks to all who have helped with this in the past and please come back this year! The sign-up for helping with the crosses will be on the table in the vestibule of church from the end of February until March 10th. Anyone can come on March 11, even if they have not signed up. Bob and his wife, Sandy are long time IHM Parishoners and two of our most active volunteers. While Bob’s list of volunteer activities is extensive and varied, an important theme is his commitment to feeding the hungry and reaching out to the lonely and isolated. He is an active and proud member of the Knights of Columbus and serves as the coordinator of the parish monthly breakfast. He also coordinates the IHM/K of C Christmas Dinner, providing a holiday for anyone who wants to share a holiday meal. In addition to the meal at the parish, volunteers provide meals to shut-ins and deliver meals to police and fire fighters who are working on Christmas. It is our way of expressing our appreciation and gratitude for their service. Our volunteer food related activities include then SEM food pantry and the Race Track Ministry. In addition to meeting the physical needs of the hungry, Bob’s outreach includes an understanding a commitment to responding to those who are lonely and isolated. His friendly and caring approach to all he meets is an inspiration. Summer PRP III: July 24–August 4 (Monday–Friday) 9 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Join us for another summer of faith filled learning and fun. This year’s theme is all about Mary, the Mother of God—Our Mother too. If you want to have fun and make some awesome memories while growing in your faith, Camp Bosco is for you! Open to all incoming 6–8 grade students (as of 2017–18 school year). Visit ihom.org to learn more and register!! Attention all Eucharistic Ministers, Mass Coordinators, Ushers and Greeters! We will be offering a brief educational session on the use of the AED’s and Emergency CPR 20 minutes BEFORE all Masses the weekend of March 4/5 in the Guadalupe Room. 40 Days for Life There will be a signup easel set out from the end of February and all during Lent, in the Gathering Space. Please volunteer an hour of prayer at the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic on Auburn Avenue for either of our parish’s two days— March 15 and April 1. Also, kindly ask someone to take your place if you cannot be there. We depend on people to keep this vigil hour so that there is constantly someone at Planned Parenthood every hour all 40 days. The clinic hates 40 days because clients frequently change their minds and cancel their appointments when someone is out there on the sidewalk, praying for their baby. And Pregnancy Center East, one of our IHM-supported crisis pregnancy centers, reports they are always inundated with women DURING THE 40 DAYS who come to them for counseling, decide to keep their babies, and receive generous support.” A Stewardship Parish, celebrating 72 years as a faith community Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 26, 2017 Parish Coffee Join us Sunday, March 5, after the 9:30 a.m. Mass in Heritage Hall for our Parish Coffee. All parishioners are welcome! Do you relate to God from a distance or do you have a living relationship with God? Come to our Fathers Team meeting on Friday, 3/3/17, at 6:03 a.m. in the St. Matthew Room of the IHM Welcome Center to find out the different ways that we can relate to God. A living relationship with God implies that we communicate with God everyday and try to do His will everyday. If we want to make this the best Lent so far in our lives, we can do so by connecting and deepening our relationship with our Creator through his son Jesus and their life-giving Holy Spirit.
