Christ’s victory over death on a cross reveals the radiance of God’s pure love for us. St. Francis de Sales notes: Out of Jesus’ death on the cross comes eternal life. Our Savior’s death purchased for us a life of eternal glory. The world does not understand this wondrous paradox of our Savior’s Cross. His death was an excess of love that was eternally life-giving to us. On the cross, Jesus showed us how to save ourselves through holy love. Nothing urges on a person’s heart so much as love. Like a loving nurse, Jesus tenderly nourished us on the cross with an incomprehensible love. He wanted to make us understand that the love He bore us was undiminished by his suffering. On the cross, Jesus also wanted to teach us how our heart ought to be toward our neighbor. Seeing the ignorance and weakness of those who tormented Him, He forgave them on the cross. A prayer of forgiveness is a sacrifice. It is the sacrifice of our lips and our heart that we present to God as much for our neighbor as for ourselves. On the cross, Jesus fed us with his own flesh and blood. God sent Jesus to heal our human brokenness. Indeed, He died with a holy joy for our cure, although it cost Him His life. He forgot Himself but not His creatures. Let us not be frightened or give up in our struggle to overcome evil with holy love and truth as Jesus did. Let us firmly and faithfully pursue the course that Jesus traveled first and the saints after Him. We ought to consecrate every moment of our life to the divine love of our Redeemer’s Cross. That is, to His glory we must bring home all our works, actions, thoughts and affections. Then, we too will be alive to God in Christ Jesus, whose victorious and exalted Cross we celebrate today. (Adapted from the writings of St. Francis de Sales, especially his “Treatise on the Love of God; Sermons”, Rev. Louis Fiorelli, OSFS, ed.) WE WELCOME those who have recently entered into our faith through the waters of Baptism: Sarah Elizabeth Faiks, daughter of Grant and Kimberly; and Grayson Patrick Tolli, son of Adam and Lisa. OF THE HOLY CROSS HEARING IMPAIRED? Amplification devices are once again available for anyone having difficulty hearing the Mass. We had a sound specialist come in and adjust the earpieces and they now work better than ever! If you would like to use one, just ask an usher, greeter or Welcome Desk volunteer before Mass. Also, the parish has purchased large-print Sunday Missals to help you worship. If you would like one for your personal use contact Sue Colyer at [email protected] or 703-860-6149. EXALTATION OF THE CROSS Early in the fourth century St. Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, went to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ's life. She razed the second-century Temple of Aphrodite, which tradition held was built over the Savior's tomb, and her son built the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher over the tomb. During the excavation, workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a dying woman. The cross immediately became an object of veneration. At a Good Friday celebration in Jerusalem toward the end of the fourth century, according to an eyewitness, the wood was taken out of its silver container and placed on a table together with the inscription Pilate ordered placed above Jesus' head: Then "all the people pass through one by one; all of them bow down, touching the cross and the inscription, first with their foreheads, then with their eyes; and, after kissing the cross, they move on." To this day the Eastern Churches, Catholic and Orthodox alike, celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the Septem ber anniversary of the basilica's dedication. The feast entered the Western calendar in the seventh century after Emperor Heraclius recovered the cross from the Persians, who had carried it off in 614 AD 15 years earlier. According to the story, the emperor intended to carry the cross back into Jerusalem himself, but was unable to move forward until he took off his imperial garb and became a barefoot pilgrim. “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:18 Copyright © Franciscan Media. UPCOMING SPECIAL LITURGIES Sunday, September 21st 9:30am Baptism Sunday, September 21st 5:00pm RCIA Rite of Acceptance THE EXALTATION CROSS, OR CRUCIFIX? A cross is simply the “T-shaped” instrument that was used for crucifixion and now bears more of a symbol of triumph for Christians. A crucifix however, is any image of that same cross with Jesus’ body (known as the corpus) depicted on it. Catholics are free to wear either and to have either on display in their churches, although most Catholic Churches would choose to have a crucifix on display while many Protestant churches opt for the cross. In other cultures the image depicted on the crucifix may also be more vivid depicting a suffering Jesus more dramatically as well. NEXT WEEKEND’S READINGS: Next weekend we celebrate The Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Please prepare for Mass and the Homily by reflecting on these texts from God’s Word: Isaiah 55:6-9 Since the ways of God go beyond human judgment, the sinner has no reason to fear an encounter with God. The sinner must repent and will be forgiven. Psalm 145:2-3, 8-9, 17-18 The Lord is Near to All Who Call Upon Him The divine wisdom and mercy are infinite: “His greatness is unsearchable.” Philippians 1:20-24,27 Faced with his approaching death, the imprisoned Paul sends his sentiments to his brothers and sisters. Renouncing the joy of rejoining Christ, he prefers to continue his work of evangelization among them. Matthew 20:1-16 It is useless to discuss here the logic or social import of the attitude of the vineyard master. With God there is no question of rights. Christians, who have come last, are as much the objects of God’s love as those first called, the people of Israel. LAST CALL FOR COOKIES We are running one final request for more cookies for parishioners to take to a four-day retreat for inmates at the Powhatan Correctional Center, a men’s prison near Richmond. They are short of their goal of 200 dozen to add to the 3,000 total needed for the retreat taking place from Monday, September 22nd - Thursday, September 25th. Can you help bring Christ to these men to let them know they are not forgotten, through this powerful good deed? The cookies are needed no later than next Sunday, September 21st. For information and specific directions for cookie baking (they have to be done a certain way!), please email or call Bill Eager at [email protected] 703-899-4304. All help will be gratefully accepted. You might also consider praying throughout that week for all the participants at the retreat.
