POP ART DESIGN Organized by the Vitra Design Museum January 7 - April 2, 2017 POP ART DESIGN • Pop Art emerged in the post-war era, circa the fifties in the U.K. and the sixties in the U.S. • As an artistic movement, it is characterized by its appeals to vernacular, often “low-brow” visual language. • Focuses on products of mass media, mass production, and consumer culture as fixtures/undercurrents of contemporary daily living. • This exhibition focuses on the dialogue between fine art and design within the pop art movement. Pop Art Design is organized by Vitra Design Museum in collaboration with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Denmark) and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Support for the exhibition is provided by Pamela Schmider. POP ART DESIGN • In explaining his inspiration for the show, Curator Mathias Schawrtz-Clauss of the Vitra Design Museum in Germany noted the links between many pieces held by the design museum’s collection and the “Pop Art phenomenon.” • Rounding out the visibility of Pop Art’s influence on design for this exhibition, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Denmark) and the Moderna Museet (Sweden), both early, important exhibitors of pop artists since the early sixties, were able to add to the concept from the wealth of their collections and their historical links to the movement. OCMA has built upon that impulse. Pop Art Design is organized by Vitra Design Museum in collaboration with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Denmark) and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Support for the exhibition is provided by Pamela Schmider. POP ART DESIGN “Pop Art is not simply presented as a phenomenon of the times... Instead the exhibition highlights the dialectic character of Pop Art, traces the migrations of images and motifs between the disciplines, sheds light on questions of media theory, and explores the boundaries between picture and appliance, between image and art.” Mateo Kries, Director, Vitra Design Museum POP ART DESIGN catalogue REALITY AS COLLAGE Achille Castiglioni, Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (Italian, 1918-2002, 1913-1968) No. 200 / Sella, 1957/1983 Zanotta SpA, Nova Milanese, MI, Italy Stool Chrome-plated and lacquered steel, lacquered cast iron, leather, copper 88 x 27.5 x 27.5 cm Alexander von Vegesack, Lessac THINKING AUTOMATONS Charles Eames, Ray Eames (American, 1907-1978, 19121988) A Communications Primer, 1953 16-mm film, digitized 22 min 30 sec, color Courtesy Eames Office Anonymous High Wheel Robot, 1965 Toy Robot Tin, plastic Yoshiya, Japan 25.5 x 11 x 10 cm Fifo Sticker Andy Warhol Mao, 1972 Serigraph, edition 91 of 250 36 x 36 inches, each (set of 10) OCMA Collection; Gift of Ulrike Kantor QUOTING BRANDS Simon International Omaggio ad Andy Warhol, 1973 Gavina SpA, Bologna (BO), Italy Stool Paint drum with silkscreen, fabric upholstery 45 x 31 x 31 Vitra Design Museum FROM FOLK ART TO POP Alexander Girard (American, 1907-1993) To Susan and Sansi from Sandro, 1960–70 Wood, sugar cubes, printed paper, gold foil 67.5 x 69.5 cm Vitra Design Museum Saul Steinberg (Romanian, 1914-1999) Eames Chair, 1950 Ink on paper 44 x 37 x 3 cm Vitra Design Museum PRODUCTS IN MUSEUMS Ben Birillo, Paul Bianchini (American, b. 1928, 1928-2000) The American Supermarket, 1964 Project organized by Bianchini Gallery, New York Backlit Transparency 43.4 x 60.4 x 11 cm © Henri Dauman/Daumanpictures.com, All Rights Reserved Gene Moore (American, 1910-1998) Untitled, 1956 Shop window with a painting by by Robert Rauschenberg, Bonwit Teller department store, New York 43.4 x 31.4 x 11 cm © VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2012 DISSOLUTION OF IMAGES George Nelson Associates, Inc.
