Fauquier County Public Schools News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jan. 23, 2017 Karen Parkinson, Coordinator of Information Phone (540) 422-7031 [email protected] SIXTEEN DECA STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR STATE COMPETITION Ten marketing students from Fauquier High School, three from Kettle Run High School and three from Liberty High School qualified for state DECA competition by taking top honors at the district level during the 2017 DECA District Leadership Conference Jan. 11 in Winchester, VA. Through role plays and interviews, students competed in various categories testing their marketing, management and entrepreneurial skills. Fauquier students who qualified to represent their school at the state level by winning first, second, or third place overall, are as follows: Samuel Creveling – first in principles of marketing Tiana Minor – first in social media Oliver Wrigley – first in sports and entertainment marketing Meredyth Canard – second in quick-serve restaurant management Andrew Howser – second in job interview Erin Jones – second in business services marketing Casey Burr – third in principles of marketing Sophia Waugh – third in accounting applications Emma Gorg – alternate for third in business services marketing Brandon Robison – alternate for third in sports and entertainment marketing Kettle Run students who qualified to represent their school at the state level by winning first, second, or third place overall, are as follows: Kendall Penn – first in quick serve restaurant management Nick Fallows – second in selling Diane Kallighan – third in retail merchandising Liberty students who qualified to represent their school at the state level by winning first, second, or third place overall, are as follows: Gillian Tocheny – first in personal financial literacy Sarah Swartchick – second in human resources management Jennifer Smith – third in apparel and accessories marketing The DECA State Leadership Conference will be held March 3-5 in Virginia Beach. Students who place in the top three at state competition will advance to national competition. Three FHS students will be honored with Merit Awards and membership in the DECA Honor Society: Meredyth Canard, Brandon Robison and Emma Symanski. Brandon is also competing for a $1,000 scholarship from the Virginia DECA Foundation. Emma will also submit for competition a 30-page written franchise business plan; her idea is to franchise a specific-theme restaurant from Germany to America. Business/marketing teachers serving as DECA advisors at FCPS high schools are Kathleen Lynch, Fauquier High School; Erika Yates, Kettle Run High School; and Valerie Hermes, Liberty High School.
