The Ride For Roswell’s Celebration of Hope When you think about summer in Western New York, what comes to mind? Maybe it’s spending time with loved ones. Perhaps it’s being outside with a beer and a burger. You may love listening to live music in the warm summer air. Or maybe it’s the inspiration and excitement of The Ride For Roswell! In 2016, the Celebration of Hope will be all of the above. As always, the Celebration of Hope will honor the collective spirit of Roswell Park Cancer Institute and The Ride For Roswell as the heart of Western New York’s fight against cancer! The event is a rally against cancer and a celebration of the survivors, patients and Roswell Park heroes fighting for a cure. This year’s Celebration of Hope will also feature these exciting elements: • The Roswell Park department procession, featuring patients, survivors, doctors, researchers and more. • The arrival of the Extra Mile Club Peloton. • A tribute to all those for whom we ride in honor and in memory. • The chance to experience and learn more about the cutting-edge research going on at Roswell Park, thanks to your donations. • Live music from WNY’s best local bands. Roswell Park currently has 13 therapy dogs. • Family-friendly activities and entertainment. • Festival-style food options. 1-877-ASK-RPCI (1-877-275-7724) | www.RoswellPark.org Continued Volume 4, Issue 5 June 2016 The Celebration of Hope is free and open to everyone! The acquisition of what will now be called Roswell Park Hematology Oncology Southtowns as a Roswell Park community cancer practice was made official in mid-April. “We welcome Dr. Garbes and his team to the Roswell Park family. This partnership means the best of both worlds for cancer patients, particularly those in and around the Southtowns,” says Candace Johnson, PhD, Roswell Park President & CEO. “Adding this highly respected practice to the Roswell Park network allows us to expand the availability of quality cancer care and the newest treatment options to more patients.” Dr. Garbes completed an oncology fellowship at Roswell Park in 1987 and in that same year he opened his private practice. Through this new affiliation with Roswell Park, the practice’s patients will have access to a comprehensive slate of cancer diagnostic and treatment services; the ability to participate in multidisciplinary case review; and the opportunity to access treatments not available at other community practices through participation in clinical trials. “We are so privileged to be able to join Roswell Park,” says Dr. Garbes. “For me it feels like coming full circle, since that’s where I did my training in oncology. Being part of a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center means our patients will have access to the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer — resources only an institution like Roswell Park can provide — while remaining in a comfortable community setting.” Located at 3612 Seneca St. in West Seneca, Roswell Park Hematology Oncology Southtowns will increase convenience and access to advanced oncology services for patients south of the city. Dr. Garbes and his team will continue to provide compassionate care, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and blood disorders.
