Having the Swish team working alongside the Bozzy team has been GREAT! They
have shown great dedication to our marketing and design work and have been
consistent, creative, but most of all hard working. We can’t wait to see what they

There are a couple of typical paths to business
ownership. There is the “turn your hobby into a
business” model favoured by many stay-at-homemums and then there is the “go to uni > get a
degree > work in your industry > go out on your
own” pathway favoured by say, people like me!
to operate a very lean business, doing all of the
work himself – right down to dropping flyers
into letterboxes! There was also pressure on the
home front as his wife Jody was pregnant and
helping with paperwork and admin right up till
she went into hospital to give birth!
While I know they exist, I don’t personally know
too many business owners who have forged
successful businesses after experiencing poverty,
losing their mum at 14 and having no access
to a level of education that most of us take for
granted. Yet this is David’s story and makes
the tale of Bozzy Shade Blinds all the more
remarkable.
Family is a large part of Dave’s motivation
for success - he is determined to provide
opportunities for his two little girls that he didn’t
have growing up. Three years on I reckon you
could call his business a ‘success’! Bozzy Shade
Blinds is now a thriving business with over 1000
clients per year, a staff of 20, four metropolitan
showrooms and an agency in the South West.
They are on to their third warehouse (780sqm
in size) and have achieved turnover in excess of
$2.5 million.
Three years ago, David was working as an
installer for an East Coast based outdoor
blinds company. This company experienced a
significant downturn which had the potential
to leave David’s WA based customers with
unfulfilled contracts. Where most people would
say “sorry about that, my hands are tied”, David
saw an opportunity. He could manufacture the
blinds himself and make sure these customers
didn’t miss out. And that’s exactly what he did.
Dave and his partner set up shop in a 20m2
warehouse and set about honouring those clients’
contracts. It wasn’t easy to start with. It took a
while to get suppliers to trust and believe in a 26
year old ‘young bloke who probably wouldn’t be
around too long’ and as such all materials and
advertising had to be paid for up front. With
only $2000 in the bank to start with Dave had
When asked if there are any quotes or
inspirational words he has drawn on in the past
that have lead to success today, Dave has two.
The first is from his Nan and that is “energy
makes energy”. Dave firmly believes that if you
give out positive energy, you can create positive
energy and from my very first meeting with him,
this was evident. Working with Dave and his
team has definitely been energising for the Swish
team! As small businesses, we all have lots and
lots of ideas for all the things we can do and often
get so caught up in analysis paralysis that we
don’t end up doing ANYTHING! As Dave says:
“When I decide I’m going to do something, I will
do it with all my heart and power. A lot of people
say to me, “David, when you do something you
do it to the extreme”. I say “Don’t talk about it
just DO IT!” Talking is a waste of energy that
could be directed into the challenges that are set
out in front of you.”
Dave writes down everything he thinks of, and
then just executes each idea, one at a time. So
simple, yet effective! He also doesn’t dwell on the
negative or the things that didn’t work. He just
moves on to the next thing.
The other words Dave lives by are “never say
you can’t”. This one he got from his mum and he
says “It was remembering this that gave me the
confidence to take the risk of starting my own
business. Mum was right, I didn’t say ‘I can’t’,
and even through those first tough 12 months,
with little cash, I never said I couldn’t do it.”
It has been both inspirational and educational
working with Dave and his team. All the best
relationships are a two way street and where
Bozzy has benefited from consistency of design
across all their collateral, so too has Swish
benefited from seeing how they operate. As
