Speaker Shares History of the
Selection of the Unknown Soldier in
Arlington National Cemetery.
Matthew Scott, enlightened the Chapter on how the
selection of the first unknown soldier in 1921 occurred.
He presented rare photos and shared the history of how
the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier evolved.
On Memorial Day, 1921, four unknowns were exhumed
from four World War I American cemeteries in France.
U.S. Army Sgt. Edward F. Younger, who was wounded
in combat, highly decorated for valor and received the
Distinguished Service Medal,” selected the Unknown
Soldier of World War I from four identical caskets at the
city hall in Chalons-sur-Marne, France, Oct. 24, 1921.
Sgt. Younger selected the unknown by placing a spray
of white roses on one of the caskets. He chose the third
casket from the left. The chosen unknown soldier was
transported to the United States aboard the USS
The Unknown Soldier lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda
from his arrival in the United States until Armistice Day,
1921. On Nov. 11, 1921, President Warren G. Harding
officiated at the interment ceremonies at the Memorial
Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery.

New Compatriot Approved by
National SAR.
We are excited to welcome Gene Le Noue as our
newest Compatriot. Gene’s Patriot is Rev. Joseph
Louis Cheuvront who was born in Strasbourg
Alsace France 1 Feb 1757 and died 12 Aug 1832
in what is now known as Good Hope, West
Virginia.
He came to the Virginia from London at about age
15 and was bound to Moses Ellsworth who became
his future father-in-law.
During the Revolutionary War it is found that
Joseph served the Fort Hinkle Militia in 1775 under
Capt. John Skidmore. Joseph Cheuvront was
called out with the VA Militia in April, 1780 when
requisition was made on the state of Virginia for
300 men in the American Army of the Revolution.
He served until, and was present at, the surrender
of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, VA, on Oct. 1781."
We’ll save the rest of his story for Gene to share
with us upon his induction. President Jan Huber
believes this is the first foreign-born Patriot we’ve
had in the Chapter.
