10th May 2017 Welcome to Week 2, Term 2 2017 It was so nice to see everyone back from their term break excited to see their friends and their teachers, ready to rip into their learning for the term. This term we have our major focus as the school production. More information will come out about this as the term moves ahead. Some of the teachers may ask for items from home and for help with costumes or props etc. I am sure that if everyone chips in and helps it will be a real success. Just a heads up ….. there are two nights in the second to last week of the term when the children will be involved in the evening performance. These will start at 6pm and will finish around 7:30pm. I know that this will not fit the sleeping patterns of some of the younger students and that is why I am giving you lots of advanced warning. This way you can give them a few early nights before the big night(s) and they can also have a sleep in on the Friday and come to school before 10:40am. The dates for the evening performances are down for the 28th and 29th of June. New Teacher I would like to welcome Brogan Dunce onto the staff. She started with us on the first day of term two and has been appointed to the end of the year in a long term reliever capacity. Brogan is working in Team Tarānui with Rebecca Lock so please make yourself known to her by saying hello and introducing yourself. Winter Sports Very shortly the winter sports season will get into full swing. There are a couple of things that I would like to remind everyone of before the season kicks into gear. It is not only the children that are representing Foxton Beach School when they are out on the field playing, it is the parents. I would really like to get through this hockey season without getting a call from the Horowhenua Hockey Association about conduct on the sideline. What we all need to remember is, that it is children’s sport and not the Olympics. It is supposed to be fun for all involved. My bottom line is that the referees are the ones that make the final call on the field about rules and the coaches are the ones that make the calls about the teams. If parents want to run a team, then put your name forward and do so, otherwise, let the coach get on with the job. They are the ones that have given up the time to come in and coach or to run the team while sometimes missing out on watching their own children. It is great to see parents supporting the teams passionately, but please keep the comments positive and not too over the top. School Carpark As we get into the winter months and more parents are dropping children off at school I’d like to try and encourage parents with children in Rooms 4,5,6 and 7 to be using the back gate for pickup and drop off. We are working with the council at the moment around plans to put in a parking area in Thomas Place but in the meantime we are just asking for a bit of patience. If the weather is good I would really like to encourage parents to get their children on bikes, scooters or walking. If you are going to drop children off in Carthew Terrace, I would really appreciate it if parents could come up the street, turn around at the top and go past the ABC and then pull over and let children out. The yellow lines at the top are there as it is a no parking, no stopping area as there is simply not enough room for everyone. Head Lice and Hair Checks I would really like to thank those mums who turned up on the first day of the term to carry out head checks and treatments on children. This is a great service that our school offers and I know that it helps many families. One thing that could really help is getting all the children to spend some time each night brushing their own hair. This breaks the legs of the head lice and they die. If your child is treated at school another thing that you need to do is to change the bedding as they can survive for some time off their host. If you are able to help out with the hair checks in the future, please talk to Lisa or Caroline on the Home and School Committee. Enrolment Scheme Consultation If you are a family that is living in Foxton and you have not brought back your notice about the meeting tonight, that is fine. If you want to come along and hear what this means for you and your children, just come along to school tonight at 6:00pm. We will be running another evening for families who live at Foxton Beach to explain what an enrolment scheme is, why we have to have one and what this could mean for you if you move out of Foxton Beach. We will let you know more about this meeting in a few weeks. Health Consultation I’d like to thank everyone who returned the survey about our Health Curriculum. The general consensus from the surveys that came back were that the children's health needs at present are around personal wellness, keeping clean, having a positive self esteem and for our children to be able to keep themselves safe. The comments coming from the parents who had older students were around ensuring we are teaching puberty, which is now referred to as sexuality education and that focusing on healthy eating options was important as well. As we get closer to term three, there will be the opportunity to meet with the Teachers in Rooms 4 to 7 to look at the content that will be covered in a unit around changes. We will be looking at sexuality education, keeping ourselves safe and ongoing netsafe. This way we are equipping our students with the knowledge of what is happening to their changing bodies and how they keep themselves safe in the community and online. These units will be explained very carefully to parents and we would love to have your input as well. Te Hinaki Devices I’d like to thank everyone who sent back a notice with the expression of interest in purchasing a device for any Year 4 to 8 students for this year and any Year 3 students for next year. I will be contacting those parents who have older children to get them in and sign paperwork etc this week. Those parents who have Year 3 children we will be ordering their devices closer to the end of the year. This way they will get the full benefit of the warranty and insurance when they start bringing them to school. Hamish Stuart Principal Reminders & Events Interschool Athletics

We are beginning our Inquiry this term looking at famous people and what attributes and people have helped them be successful. We will use the ideas we discover to think about our own learning and what we can do to help us become more successful with our goals. Cameron from Sport Horowhenua will be coming in throughout the term to help use with our Rippa Rugby skills and work towards having a minicompetition. Our first session was last Thursday… we learnt about throwing using the “elephant trunk” technique and catching using “hamburger hands”. Team Kuaka & Tarānui This term we welcome Miss Brogan to our team. It has been a fantastic first week settling in and getting to know the students and the school, and she cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings. We had our first Rippa Rugby session with Cameron and Goody last week and have 3 more sessions left. Our children behaved exceptionally well, and we are proud that they showed the visiting coaches how FBS kids are respectful and all participate with a positive attitude. Production practice is in full swing. Our team is doing a dance that is 1960s themed, so please have a look through their clothes for something brightly coloured for them to wear for this. Or if you’ve got some funky 60s dress ups we’d love to borrow them! For our inquiry this term, we are looking into different events, since our production is based on the event FIFA World Cup. It is timely with the upcoming Lions Tour too and we have already explored the provinces that the Lions are playing in. We are exploring statistics and have created our own survey about our class, graphed the results and written in depth statements about them. Another statistical investigation we have looked at is transport to school. It was interesting reading the statements that were written when analysing the results: ‘The front gate is used more because it is faster to the ally way and to class’ Chevy ‘I think that people go in a car because they are far away from school’ Danon ‘I wonder if most people take their cars because their parents drop them when they go to work?’ Janelle Awards Team Taranui: Participating and Contributing: Kaya Thinking: Sam, Kaylem and Harmony Relating to Others: Evie and Chris R.I.C.E. Talia Kuaka Learning Hub: Managing Self: Bree, Skye, Heidi, Noah R.I.C.E: Theo Team Kotare: Peyton for having her tools in the correct place ready to start the day. Teyn for consistently managing his time and expectations in class with a willingness, smile and a positive attitude.
