Objective
Thehumanlungsaredividedbyfissuresintolobes,whichfacilitatemovementsoflobesinrelationtooneanother.Anatomicalvariationsoflungsincludingnumber,fissures
andlobesareatutmostimportant.Thestudywasdonetonotethemorphologicalvariationofthefissuresandlobesinfetallungs.
Methods
Thisstudywasdoneon52formalinfixedhumanfetuses,rangingfrom12thweeksto40thweeksgestationalageintheInstituteofAnatomy.Afterfixationthefetuseswere
desectedandthebothlungswereremoved.Foreachlung,detailsofthemorphologyoflobesandfissures,presenceofanyvariantfissureoraccessoryfissurewerenoticed.
Results
Ontherightside,8specimensshowedincompleteobliquefissure,39specimensshowedincompletehorizontalfissure,1specimenshowedabsenceofhorizontalfissureand
9specimensshowedsuperioraccessoryfissure.Ontheleftside,5specimensshowedincompleteobliquefissureandtheleftminorfissurewasseenin8specimens.
Conclusion
Thefindingsofthepresentstudyshowedawiderangeofvariationsofmajorandminoraccessoryfissures.Thefactsaboutsuchvariationsmightexplainbizarrepresentation
ofcertainclinicalcasespertainingtolungpathology.Knowledgeoflobesandfissuresinaparticularpopulationmighthelptheclinicianduringdiagnosisandpartialresection
oflungs.Thismayreducemorbidityandmortalityassociatedwithlungdisease.
