MINI CROSS WORD NO. 10
The end of Pennant saw a slight lull in bowling activity, but things are now in full swing
again.
It was remiss of us last month not to acknowledge the Triples Champions for 2014.
There were some great games leading up to the final which was won by Judy Parkinson’s
team (S. Carr and R. Schey) against Pauline Andersen’s team (J. Alley and N. Blackbourn). Well done all!
Another competition that has been decided is the Major/Minor Fours, once again sponsored by Judy Davis. Jacqui McLennan’s team (L. Hansen, I. White & sub R. Green, and
V. Beckman) had a substantial win against Joan Nolan’s team (C. Small, R. Pegg & sub
G. Smith, and V. Roberts). A good effort by all the bowlers!
Queen of the Green has been won this year by Pauline Andersen, while Ros Helton won
the Star. Congratulations ladies; and thank you to Shirley who organised these ongoing
Singles events.
The highlight of October was our Springtime Fiesta, with perfect weather and 28 teams
on the greens. A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the
day – to our umpires Stuart and Reg, to Joan and her many helpers, to Shirley and
Elaine who kept the scores (and enabled me to participate) – and of course to our catering and bar staff, and our Greens volunteers. Numerous others were involved, so thank
you all. Such days would not be possible without our sponsors – K. Smith & Son Jewellers and Pelican Waters Estates.
The next few weeks will be extremely busy, so please take note of the dates below, and
more importantly, come along on Wednesdays for full details of events.
On a sad note, the club recently lost life member Mac Marshall, husband of our wellloved Patroness Gwen. Mac was a wonderful member, a quiet achiever who worked tirelessly for our club, and we express our deep sympathy to Gwen and her family.
Dates to remember:
5 November – Fun & Friendship Day sponsored by Past Presidents
12 November – President Irene’s Day (“Roaring Twenties” theme)
17 November – Fashion Parade
19 November – Graded & Drawn Triples
24 November – AGM for Ladies Bowling Arm at 10am

Chairman’s Report:
We have had two in-visits this month, the first being Waterloo Bowls on the 12th
with nearly 50 visitors being matched by our members on the day.
The second by the Gold Coast Masonic Bowls with 40 bowlers on Sunday the
26th.These visits by other clubs are not only important getting more people
through the club but also shows our friendship on the greens. A big thankyou to
all who made these days a success.
Long serving Life Member John Chambers celebrated his 95th birthday here at
the club with a bowls day and 90 members coming along and all having a great
day. Well done John and hope there are many more.
Coming up we have our Volunteers Day on Saturday 15th sponsored by Kelvin
Kerkow of BCIB Insurance Brokers ,so if you have volunteered in any way for the
club over the past year please come along and bring your bowls for an afternoon
of fun and friendship.
See you around the club

John Chamber’s 95th Birthday Bash Day

M.B.A Presidents Report
This month the Bowls club lost one of its great stalwarts with the death of Mac
Marshall. A Life member, tireless worker for the betterment of the club, and long
time bowler. Our thoughts go out to his surviving family.
We have had two great combined events this month. The In Visit by the Waterloo
Social Club resulted in 100 players gracing our greens, 57 visitors and 43 members, and then John Chamber's 95th Birthday, when another 90 players participated. These were great results, and thanks those who organised these events,
and to you bowlers who participated. The Men's bowling arm would like to extend
to John our appreciation for the things he has done for this club, and his continuing generosity. Happy Birthday John.
Night Pennants, again a joint venture with the Ladies Bowling Arm. After three
matches, we sit on the top of the ladder in the Southern Sunshine Coast Division.
Two wins and one loss, gives us a one point lead over Mooloolaba, and four over
Kawana. Keep up the good work.
Our Division 4 Men's Pennant team has been invited to participate in the Combined South East Queensland District Bowls Final. Ten teams will compete for the
trophy at Coolum on the 8/9th Nov. They would welcome some club support, and
one would expect to see some exceptional bowls played, so try to get there on
one of the days. We wish them the best of luck.
In conjunction with the Ladies Bowling Arm, we have almost finalised the Events
Calendar for 2015. It will be published soon so you can organise your year well in
advance.
All Club Championship events, except the Mixed Pairs, have been decided. Congratulations to all winners, and thanks to all Members who participated
REMEMBER- M.B.A AGM on Monday 24th Nov 7.00pm. Some of our existing
members have indicated that they will not be standing for re-election in 2015. We
thank them for their efforts in 2014, and in many cases some years prior to then,
but it means we need people to step up and fill these places. Nomination sheets
for all positions will be posted on the Notice Board on the 27th Oct with nominations closing on Sunday 23rd Nov, so please start campaigning to keep our M.B.A
strong and well serviced.
As an aside, we have had three events this month that have seen around 100
bowlers participating. The new chairs have proved their worth, as we have not
experienced the constrictions that we had in the past. A great decision.
Finally a “Snippet from the Green” . Joan Nolan's team scored an 8 on John
Chambers Day.
To all Members not in the best of health, we send our best wishes for a speedy
recovery.
Yours in bowls
Bob Johnstone/ Murray Small

MESSAGE FROM THE COACHING DEN NOVEMBER 2014.
Over the last few months we have been going through Profiles of the Positions of a team of fours covering the Lead, Second, Third and Skip. Covering basic
requirements, attributes, practice required and team compatibility, plus selection. I
hope this has given you things to think about and what you should be doing.
One of the main things is Practice. Training, self evaluation and a MUST –
recording your training sessions. If you need help in setting up an effective training
programme, talk to your Club Coach
Co-ordinator to help you.
An example is to use 4 bowls delivered to a jack or marker using a scoring
zone of 1 metre. See how many bowls you can put in the scoring zone. One only
rates 25%. Your job from then is to work on getting 2 bowls in the zone, 50% and so
on. Once you’re happy with this adjust the length of your delivery. “Yes, Practice,
Practice, Practice.”
We have over the year mentioned “Read Your Green”:
Establish aiming line and aiming point.
Determine green speeds. “Watch The Changes”.
Weather has an influencing factor.
Remember Wind.
Water
Cloud
Sunshine
Windy conditions – Becoming proficient in perfect conditions is not enough.
You require to practice in windy conditions.
Wet conditions – Rain will affect the running speed of the green and consequently change the arc of the bowl.
Cloudy - Cloud cover may slightly lower the speed of the green.
Sunshine – Increasing temperature throughout the day may dry the surface
and increase running speed. Late afternoon sun and consequent temperature drop
may decrease the green speed.
You need to Train, Train and more Training covering all these conditions.
This will be my last message from your coaching den in 2014. I would on
behalf of your coaches den wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy Prosperous
New Year.
Coach Ken.

To Member MacGregor Marshall who passed away on Monday
the 13th October 2014. Mac as we called him was 85 years old.
Mac joined our Club on the 9th September 1991 and from the very
start was a great fix it man, worked on the greens and surrounds
for many years and many other jobs, if it needed doing just call
Mac he would be there to help.
Mac will be sadly missed by all who came his way as he was a
very much loved man and a great friend to many.
Mac was awarded Life Membership on the 19th March 2006.
