CHECKOUT IS CHANGING WITH EMV

SECURED TRANSACTIONS & REDUCED CARD PRESENT FRAUD
CHECKOUT IS
CHANGING WITH EMV
EMV is the global standard for processing secure card
present transactions. Used in over 80 countries, chipenabled cards exchange unique authentication data with
EMV-enabled terminals.
Chip-enabled cards have enhanced security features
compared to magnetic stripe cards, including:
—HARDER TO DUPLICATE: The chip helps prevent
card cloning
—DATA AUTHENTICATION: Validates the card is
genuine every time it is used
Upgrading to chip-enabled terminals will effectively
combat point of sale (POS) fraud and drive greater
consumer confidence when making purchases.
The transition to EMV takes time, so start planning now.
Every merchant will need to switch to EMV to avoid
fraud liability - this could provide new business
opportunities for you, as long as you, your partners
and your devices are ready. Reach out to your acquirers
and payment service providers to understand their EMV
readiness, and follow this phased approach to
accelerate your EMV deployment.

unique data for each transaction
Phase 1: EMV Implementation Planning
Consider how you will implement, fund and roll out EMV:
• Certify for all card brands at once. This will save
you time and money and will offer merchants and
consumers a consistent POS experience.
• Prepare for certification timeframes. Each
certification will take much longer than traditional
magstripe certifications.
• Prepare for the October 2015 fraud liability shift
by helping merchants get ready, which can lead to
a boost in your sales and a decrease in card
present fraud.
• Have a plan for contactless EMV.
• Consider joint implementation meetings with
merchants, ISVs and dealers to ensure you have a
solid implementation plan.
Be sure your EMV certification includes D-PAS, so your application can process Discover® EMV transactions.
D-Payment Application Specification, or D-PAS, is the Discover® EMV compliant smart-card payment solution
for both contact and contactless interfaces. D-PAS is compliant with current EMV standards and is used by
Discover®, Diners Club International®, PULSE® and other Discover Network partners such as BCcard.

Phase 2: Updating a Terminal or POS Device
• Address all POS enhancements at once. When
upgrading your terminals, consider including
contactless (mobile NFC) payment support. If you’re
not ready to support contactless payments, ensure
terminals can be updated remotely at a later time.
• Choose EMV devices in the same product family.
This will save time when certifying, provide a
consistent cardholder experience, and allow you to
offer different payment options at different locations.
• Ensure your terminals are certified for EMV levels
1 and 2. These certifications typically expire every
3 years, so talk to your terminal vendor about their
EMV terminal support before making your selection.
• Support all Cardholder Verification Methods (CVMs)
including both online and offline PIN. This will ensure
avoidance of lost and stolen fraud liability.
Phase 3: EMV Certification
Payment brand certification is your acquirers’
responsibility - but if you are running certification tests for
them, here are key points to consider:
• Reduce the number of certifications needed by
limiting the number of applications you use. Analyze
certification requirements in advance for smoother
certifications.
• Consider semi-integrated solutions. These will isolate
the card payment application on the device and may
allow you to make certain changes to the POS.
• Leverage test tools and platforms. Speak to different
tool vendors about what tools they use, and ask your
tool vendors what services they can offer - many
vendors have decades of EMV experience. For a list of
Discover supported tools and service providers, contact
your account manager.
• As you begin to deploy EMV-capable terminals into
market prior to EMV-enablement, ensure that service
code processing is handled correctly. Acceptance of
EMV cards via the magnetic stripe must be permitted
until the device is upgraded to support EMV.
Phase 4: EMV Training
• Take advantage of the training programs and
educational materials on EMV offered by Discover.
• Encourage your dealers to complete a Discover
contract to benefit from EMV-related discounts and
promotions.
Phase 5: In-Store Roll-out
If your merchants have multiple locations, we recommend
a staged rollout with significant testing in the initial
locations:
• Replace test encryption keys with real or
“production” keys.
• Conduct production validation for all card types.
• Gather feedback from employees and adjust internal
training procedures.
• Monitor transactions approval rates, failures, etc.
• Consider additional call support staff during initial
EMV roll-out stages.
