Carpentry Careers - Baltimore County Public Schools

Carpentry Careers
The Carpentry Careers program goes beyond the conventional applications of construction. Students employ skills
and techniques necessary to woodworking and the construction industry, as well as stage design and construction.
Students develop a strong work ethic and the 00interpersonal skills necessary to work with others and to respect
the abilities of others. They are prepared to study at the post-secondary level or to enter a career path.

Prior to the Audition
Demonstration of Interest
This MUST be completed prior to coming to the audition.
Essay: On the day of the assessment, all carpentry applicants will complete a written essay that addresses
one of the three topics provided on Page 4. Students will need to research their chosen topic before coming
to the assessment. Applicants will be allowed to bring in one 3x5 hand-written note card with
information to complete their written essay. Note cards may not be typed or copied and pasted. Note
cards will be turned in with the finished essay. Please do not prepare an essay before the assessment as
essays written in advance will not be accepted. The essay will be evaluated on how well the student
responds to the prompt. The essay will be scored using a standard rubric. See Essay Topics on Page 4.
Math Test: Students will take a 15 question math test that involves fractions, word problems, division and
multiplication. Calculators will be provided. A practice test is provided on page 6 of these guidelines.
On the Day of the Audition
The audition takes approximately 2 hours.
Auditions by Appointment ONLY
It is the responsibility of the parent(s) to:
 ensure that the applicant attends the assessment on the scheduled date and time.
 contact the schools if scheduled magnet assessment appointments conflict.
Failure to attend an assessment WILL result in disqualification.
Registration Information

Assessment Description
1. Essay (10 points): All carpentry students applying to G. W. Carver Center will complete a written essay
on Assessment Day. Please do not prepare an essay before the Assessment Day. The essay will be
evaluated on how well the student responds to the prompt. The essay will be scored using a standard
rubric. See Essay Topics on Page 5.
2. Practicum (50 points): Candidates will assemble a small structure without the use of hand tools. This
project will give candidates an opportunity to demonstrate evidence of their manual dexterity skills, ability
to follow directions, and to determine carpentry interest.
3. Math Test (30 points): Students will take a math test that involves fractions, word problems, division and
multiplication. Calculators will be provided. A practice test is provided on page 6 of these guidelines.
4. Interview (10 points): Students will participate in an interview to demonstrate their interest in the
carpentry prime and their maturity to participate in a “Work Safe” environment.
Documented testing accommodations, as appropriate to the assessment, will be provided.

Essay Topics
On the day of the assessment, applicants will be asked to write an essay in response to one of the three
topics provided below. The essay will be evaluated on how thoroughly it addresses the topic. The
writing assessment will be composed and written on-site. Applicants will be allowed to bring in one 3x5
hand-written note card with information needed to complete their essay. Note cards may not be typed or copied
and pasted. Note cards will be turned in with the finished essay. Essays written in advance will not be
accepted.
1. How has the field of carpentry changed over the last 20 years? – particularly how has the
advancement of technology changed the knowledge and skills a carpenter needed then and now.
2. Compare and contrast two different careers in the field of carpentry. – How do the skills and
knowledge needed to be successful differ and what skills and knowledge needed are the same?
Include information about what education is required for each career and what employment
opportunities are available.
3. Interview a set designer/carpenter for a high school, college, or community theatrical performance
to find out why the set was designed the way it was, how the set was constructed, and what types
of skills and knowledge were needed in the construction of the set. Attend a performance in which
the set was used. Be prepared to write an essay describing what you learned during the interview
and how the set design and props enhanced the performance.
