What is Water Wise?
Working in partnership with the Amateur Swimming Association, Schools and local
swimming clubs to provide quality training and continuous development for the
swimming teachers, our aim is to provide an effective nationally recognised learn
to swim programme - the ASA Learn to Swim Pathway (LTSP).
This is a programme the ASA has developed to take children from their first splash
to full competence in the water. By following the LTSP your child will learn to
swim using fun and games.
Your child can go through ten stages where they will learn basic skills – such as
how to enter and exit the pool safely and become buoyant in the water, through
to more advanced techniques – such as how to breathe in the
water and perform different strokes.
Your child can be rewarded for their achievement at each stage with the ASA’s
LTSP. They can buy certificates and badges to track their progress and motivate
them onto the next level.
With an emphasis firmly on the FUNdamentals of swimming, the LTSP also has a
serious side. It is underpinned by the principles of Long Term Athlete Development
(LTAD) - the perfect foundation for any little Olympic hopeful.
The LTSP-based programme guides learners through ten clearly defined stages
that lead to the development of all aquatic disciplines, including swimming strokes
for competitive swimming and other skills
such as ball throwing for water polo.
Budding lifeguards can also pick up their
Rookie Lifesaving qualification as part of
the LTSP programme. This is just one of
many reasons why it is one of the most
successful sports programmes of its kind.
The syllabus is being implemented in over
1,000 swimming programmes nationwide.

Health and Safety Advice
„„ For safety reasons, parents and guardians are requested not to distract the
instructor during a lesson or immediately afterwards, as other lessons and
lifeguarding duties persist. If you wish to discuss any aspect of the lesson,
please use the Water Wise Contact Request or Feedback Form at Reception
and the instructor will contact you as soon as possible.
6
„„ On arrival for the lesson please ensure your child’s clothes/shoes etc are
stored in the locker provided until they have finished their lesson and have
showered. This leaves cubicles free for the next group arriving.
„„ Parents/guardians MUST NOT stand on poolside whilst the lessons are
taking place, this distracts both the child and the teacher. Please use the
spectator area provided.
„„ If your child requires armbands please place them on your child in the
shower area. This allows safe access to poolside and ensures they are ready
for their lesson.
