Job-Made Ladders Job-made ladders provide an excellent way to reach unusual locations and can accommodate high traffic ladder use. If less than 25 workers will use the ladder a single cleat (rung) ladder is adequate. If more than 25 workers will use the ladder a double cleat (rung) ladder is needed. Single Cleat Job-Made Ladder Double Cleat Job-Made Ladder Points to Remember: 1. The maximum height of a job-made ladder is 24 feet. 2. Cleats must be 1”x4” nominal or 2”x4” stress grade lumber. 3. Secure cleats to each rail with 3 10d common wire nails for 1x4 cleats or 3 12d common nails for 2x4 cleats. 4. Filler strips are a minimum of ¾” stock which are the width of the rail and proper length to fit between the cleats. The filler strips help keep the cleats from working loose. 5. For single cleat ladders up to and including 16’ the side rails must be 2”x4” lumber nominal and from 16’ to 24’ the side rails must be 2”x 6” lumber nominal. 6. For double cleat ladders up to and including 12’ the side rails must be 2”x4” lumber nominal and from 12’ to 24’ the siderails must be 2”x6’ lumber nominal. 7. Job-made ladders should be secured at the top and bottom. 8. The ladder must extend a minimum of 3’ past the landing with any cleats removed which are above the landing to prevent trip hazards. 9.
