Job-Made Ladders

Job-Made Ladders
Job-made ladders provide an
excellent way to reach unusual
locations and can accommodate
high traffic ladder use. If less
than 25 workers will use the
ladder a single cleat (rung) ladder
is adequate. If more than 25
workers will use the ladder a
double cleat (rung) ladder is
needed.

Points to Remember:
1. The maximum height of a job-made ladder is 24 feet.
2. Cleats must be 1”x4” nominal or 2”x4” stress grade lumber.
3. Secure cleats to each rail with 3 10d common wire nails for 1x4 cleats
or 3 12d common nails for 2x4 cleats.
4. Filler strips are a minimum of ¾” stock which are the width of the rail
and proper length to fit between the cleats. The filler strips help keep
the cleats from working loose.
5. For single cleat ladders up to and including 16’ the side rails must be
2”x4” lumber nominal and from 16’ to 24’ the side rails must be 2”x
6” lumber nominal.
6. For double cleat ladders up to and including 12’ the side rails must be
2”x4” lumber nominal and from 12’ to 24’ the siderails must be 2”x6’
lumber nominal.
7. Job-made ladders should be secured at the top and bottom.
8. The ladder must extend a minimum of 3’ past the landing with any
cleats removed which are above the landing to prevent trip hazards.
9. Job-made ladders must be inspected regularly and repaired as
necessary.
