The Church of the Messiah’s Good News November 20, 2016 Welcome to the Church of the Messiah. We are delighted to have you worshiping with us. Collect for Thanksgiving Day Almighty and gracious Father, we give you thanks for the fruits of the earth in their season and for the labors of those who harvest them. Make us, we pray, faithful stewards of your great bounty, for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Adopted by the Vestry of the Church of the Messiah on February 10, 2015. Following the way of Jesus: Statement from Presiding Bishop Michael Curry November 14, 2016 [Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs press release] Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop and Primate Michael B. Curry has issued the following statement: Last week I shared what I pray was a reconciling post-election message to our church, reminding us that ‘we will all live together as fellow Americans, as citizens.’ Today I want to remind us that during moments of transition, during moments of tension, it is important to affirm our core identity and values as followers of Jesus in the Episcopal Anglican way. Jesus once declared, in the language of the Hebrew prophets, that God’s “house shall be a house of prayer for all nations” (Mk 11:17). He invited and welcomed all who would follow saying, “come to me all who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens” (Mt. 11:28). We therefore assert and we believe that “the Episcopal Church welcomes you” – all of you, not as merely a church slogan, but as a reflection of what we believe Jesus teaches us and at the core of the movement he began in the first century. The Episcopal Church welcomes all. All of us! As the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement today, we Episcopalians are committed, as our Prayer Book teaches to honor the covenant and promises we made in Holy Baptism: To proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ; To seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbor as ourselves; to strive for justice and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being. As Christians, we believe that all humans are created in God’s image and equal before God – those who may be rejoicing as well as those who may be in sorrow. As a Church, seeking to follow the way of Jesus, who taught us, “you shall love your neighbor as yourself,” (Mt. 22:39) and to “do to others as you would have them do to you” (Mt. 7:12), we maintain our longstanding commitment to support and welcome refugees and immigrants, and to stand with those who live in our midst without documentation. We reaffirm that like all people LGBT persons are entitled to full civil rights and protection under the law. We reaffirm and renew the principles of inclusion and the protection of the civil rights of all persons with disabilities. We commit to the honor and dignity of women and speak out against sexual or gender-based violence. We express solidarity with and honor the Indigenous Peoples of the world. We affirm the right to freedom of religious expression and vibrant presence of different religious communities, especially our Muslim sisters and brothers. We acknowledge our responsibility in stewardship of creation and all that God has given into our hands. We do so because God is the Creator. We are all God’s children, created equally in God’s image. And if we are God’s children we are all brothers and sisters. “The Episcopal Church Welcomes You,” is not just a slogan, it’s who we seek to be and the witness we seek to make, following the way of Jesus. The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry Presiding Bishop and Primate The Episcopal Church 2 BISHOP ALAN GATES ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ON NOVEMBER 9th, 2016 Our national election is behind us, leaving in its wake a legacy of bitterness and hostility. For some, alienation is the apparent reason for the election’s outcome; for others alienation is its result. In either case, we face grievous division and manifest anxiety. At our recent Diocesan Convention I cited the hazard of viewing the world in terms of winners and losers–a framework which propels us inexorably towards adversarial relationships, and self-concern over communal well-being. Now is not a time to live out habitual behaviors of winners or losers. Now is a time to rededicate ourselves to the Christian ideal of breaking down the dividing walls of hostility which divide us (Ephesians 2:14). Now is a time to rededicate ourselves to the American ideal of liberty and justice for all. Forbearance is a virtue tested not when we are in harmony, but when we are divided. Sacrifice is a discipline called for not in the face of prosperity but in the face of adversity. Hope is a manifestation of faith rendered meaningful not by certainty but by anxiety. Christ calls us, in this moment, individually and communally, to forbearance, sacrifice and hope. May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13) A PRAYER FOR OUR FUTURE As our capital campaign continues, we invite you to join together in praying the following prayer that was composed by members of the parish and the rector. O God, Giver of all good gifts. We thank You for the grace of serving You by serving our neighbors. May our hearts be kind and generous. May our ministry be rooted in love and bold in imagination. In transforming the First Church, renew our lives and all who join us so the community may be changed by Your love and the power of the Spirit. Amen. ALTERNATIVE GIFT MARKET: Many thanks to volunteers and shoppers! Last weekend we had another incredibly successful Alternative Gift Market. It was our 10th anniversary and in many ways, our best. We do not have totals yet as gifts are still coming in, but we do know that we have over $40,000 already. Falmouth faith communities get it! FIRST CHURCH BUILDING COMMITTEE Hi all, First off - thanks to all who helped clean out the basement of the FC ahead of hazmat removal! Jim has been very busy the last few weeks and is doing an amazing job. Here is an update of where we are: 1) Hazmat removal was completed 11/10-11/11. 2) Interior demo contract approved for Cape Associates 3) Jim had meeting with Town Health inspector and reviewed our project. 4) Vestry approved connecting septic from Stone Church to new system to ensure no future problems with existing 125 year old septic at Stone Church. 5) Jim has been in contact with Jeff Oppenheim re: Steamship Authority parking lot access during construction of parking lot walls. 6) John Keenan and Jim are working on a bid form to submit to contractors for RFP. Next steps: FCBC should meet after the interior demo is done. We should take a tour and finally see the bones of the building. Then we will have some real answers on costs. As soon as I know when interior demo will be done, we can schedule. It could be by mid-December. Jim continues to organize the permits and bids and we talk weekly. I can't emphasize enough how valuable his expertise is. We are very fortunate to have him on our project. Please continue to send me comments or ideas. Can't wait to see the interior demo done! We have tried to contact every member of the church about pledging and many of you have already responded by returning your pledge card to us. If you haven't yet made a pledge to the campaign, please consider doing so! We would love to have 100% of the parish supporting our effort to renew the First Church. This effort to transform the building where our church originated is one that we hope everyone will be a part of. Your pledge, no matter how small or how large, will show that you support the tremendous effort so many are making on behalf of all of us. * If you have not been asked to make a pledge, please let a member of the capital campaign committee know and we will get a card to you. * If you have been asked to pledge but have not yet returned a card, please do so by the end of the year. Remember, your pledge may be made over three years, and you can begin payments at your convenience, by cash, check, credit card, or donations of stock. Please join us in going Back to Our Future! OUTREACH COMMITTEE: Reaching Out for Christmas This year the Christmas Wish List for the Village at Cataumet, the homeless shelter we support, again includes household needs. The manager asks that we Pile On The Pillows! Every guest at the shelter is given a new pillow when a family arrives. They take these with them when they find permanent housing. While bedding, used or new, is always welcome, pillows are especially needed this year. Let's amaze them with a HUGE number of pillows for Christmas! And the shelter would also again welcome our gifts of cleaning supplies. Buckets, mops, sponges, brooms and cleaning products would make much appreciated gifts. And gift cards to Walmart, Shaw's or Stop and Shop are always needed. Please bring any donations to the Gateway Room at Fisher House before December 11th. CHURCH FLOWER DONATIONS Would you like to give church flowers for worship in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special day?
