Sedimentary Rocks
formed from lithification of sediments into rock
LithificationProcess in which sediment is turned into solid rock
sedimentsany weathered rock material that settles and accumulates somewhere sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.notebook

Metamorphic Rocks
igneous or sedimentary rock that has undergone intense pressure and/or heat to form metamorphic rock
most often located beneath sedimentary rocks on the continents and in the core of mountains
never contain fossils b/c they have been changed by intense heat &/or pressure
by nature are formed deep w/in the earth’s crust and are not normally found that often at the surface unless overlying layers have been eroded

Two Types of Metamorphism:
o
1) contact metamorphism—this metamorphism occurs
only when preexisting rocks are in contact with magma. Heat changes the original minerals in the rock to make new rock
2) regional metamorphism—this metamorphism occurs when rocks are buried over a wide area and the heat & pressure changes the rocks. This normally happens near
mountains.
Two Main Groups of Metamorphic Rocks:
1)foliatedthese are metamorphic rocks where the minerals in them have been rearranged into parallel bands or layers
2)nonfoliatedmetamorphic rock that does not show layering or banding
