Important information and reminders: 1. In order for you to get the most out of a tutoring session, you must come prepared: Make sure you have read the assigned readings and have studied your notes from class before coming to the tutoring session. Come with questions about what you do not understand. Ask questions if you are not sure how to study for this class. Do not think of the tutoring session as a substitute for going to class. The tutor is not there to lecture to you or to reteach what you heard in class; he or she is there to offer you assistance in learning and to clarify the information that you are having difficulty with. The tutor’s function is not to tell you what will be on the test so that you can pick and choose what you should study. You are responsible for all of the information you learn in class; the tutor will help you to understand and use that information. 2. During the tutoring session, be actively involved. The tutor needs to know what you are struggling with in order to assist you, so speak up and ask questions. Participate in the discussion that occurs during a tutoring session—this is also an effective way of learning. Respond to the tutors’ questions when they try to lead you to the answers— when they do this, they are helping you to develop the critical thinking skills that will help you to find answers to your questions. This advance preparation and active participation will make the tutoring sessions more beneficial to both you and the others in attendance. Dana Wedeking, Tutor Coordinator
