The annotated work samples support teachers: when reporting against the achievement standard when explaining differences between one student’s achievements and another’s in implementing internal moderation practices. JUDGING STANDARDS The annotations include black text which reflect an assessment pointer relevant to the task and/or coloured text which is the task-specific evidence. YEAR PRE-PRIMARY: SCIENCE WORK SAMPLE REFLECTING HIGH ACHIEVEMENT SUMMARY OF TASK: Growth of plants Prior to this task, the children discussed what plants need to survive. In the next lesson, each child was given a bean seed and equipment to grow his or her own bean plant. The children watered their beans and watched them grow. The school vegetable garden was also explored. In this task, each student drew the beanstalk from the story Jack and the Beanstalk and identified the different features of a bean plant, using labels provided by their teacher. In reviewing their completed drawings, students also described the things that plants need in order to grow. The teacher scribed these answers. CONTENT RELEVANT TO THIS TASK Biological Sciences Living things have basic needs, including food and water Science as a Human Endeavour Science involves observing, asking questions about, and describing changes in, objects and events Science Inquiry Skills Pose and respond to questions about familiar objects and events Participate in guided investigations and make observations using the senses Share observations and ideas KEY WORDS: Grow, Survive, Plant structure Student achievement is reported at the end of the semester or year using achievement descriptors. Achievement descriptors should only be used to describe student achievement for the purpose of reporting. 2016/10134 [PDF 2016/71863] Science: Pre-Primary High Achievement Work Sample 1 WORK SAMPLE ANNOTATIONS Describes ideas about familiar living things and uses examples to describe their basic needs. Labels the drawing of the bean plant correctly. Describes ideas about familiar living things and uses examples to describe their basic needs. Drawing of bean plant is labelled correctly, with bean, flower, leaf, stem, seed and roots. Teacher’s question: ‘What things do plants need to grow?’ Student’s explanation: ‘Plants need water. They need sunshine for them to grow. They need soil for the seed to grow.’ 2016/10134 Science: Pre-Primary High Achievement Work Sample Asks and responds to questions about familiar objects and events in some detail. Responds to teacher’s question, e.g. ‘Plants need water. They need sunshine for them to grow.’ Shares and reflects on observations to represent ideas. Reflects on basic needs of bean sprout, e.g. ‘They need soil for the seed to grow.’ 2 WORK SAMPLE ANNOTATIONS © School Curriculum and Standards Authority, 2017 This document—apart from any third party copyright material contained in it—may be freely copied, or communicated on an intranet, for non-commercial purposes in educational institutions, provided that the School Curriculum and Standards Authority is acknowledged as the copyright owner, and that the Authority’s moral rights are not infringed.
