Stone Age Discovery
Editorial
Welcome to the
Christmas edition of
Oakwood News. It’s been
another busy term at
Oakwood Juniors. We
will fill you in on some of
the exciting things that
have been happening
around school. We hope
that you’ll be impressed
by all the news, puzzles
and competitions we have
in store for you.
Mini-bus for
Oakwood Junior
School
In the next few weeks we will
be lucky enough to have our
very own 15 seater mini-bus!
This will allow us to go to
even more sporting events
and trips.
On Thursday 5th
November,
there
was a suspicious
Stone Age discovery
in the nature area at
Oakwood
Junior
School in Derby.
Deputy head Mrs
Fray was shocked
and surprised so she
asked Year 3 to
investigate …
Mrs Fray when she discovered the camp.
By Judith
Deputy Head in Distress!
Alarmed, Mrs Fray told us: “I saw lots of markings on the tree but I had a lot
of phone calls. I just don’t know what to do!” Worried and terrified, Mrs
Fray asked Year 3 to investigate. Year 3 quickly went outside with their
jotters to write down everything about this mysterious event.
What we found:
While Year 3 were outside, they found some fascinating Stone Age items.
There were bones, boots, a campfire and weird markings on the tree. We saw
two bones that could have been from a sabre tooth tiger!
What do you do if you see something similar?
From this evidence, Oakwood News has concluded that if you see Stone
Age people in Derby, then contact the police. If you see a mammoth or sabre
tooth tiger, do not go near them. Instead, call the RSPCA.
Keep reading for our cool competition and crazy
cartoons!

Eggstravaganza!
Walk like an Egyptian
By Evie, Peter & Hope

The Mysterious
Discovery
During the recent half
term holiday, one junior
school
made
an
unexpected discovery. The
hard working caretaker,
Mr Mick, was plodding
along the school grounds
when suddenly he found a
mysterious, golden egg in
an ordinary box in the
middle of the field...
When Mr Mick raised the
alarm, some of the staff
had a look.
Shocked and surprised,
Mrs McDonald said, “I
couldn’t believe it when I
saw it. This egg was half
a metre tall!”
Gold and jewel studded,
the huge egg was very
heavy and rock hard. It
was kept in Mr Darby’s
office so it wouldn’t hatch
and let a fierce creature
loose around the school!

Year 5 used this
discovery to write a
newspaper article that
would’ve been fit for
The Times! The article
explained there was
CCTV footage of a
hooded
person
dropping the interesting
egg. From there we
drew conclusions about
where we thought the
egg could’ve come
from. Some of Year 5
thought the egg was
from a dragon.
Pictures
of
this
eggsclusive discovery
were sent to Derby
University in order for
them to investigate
further. Year 5 hope
that it is a dragon egg…
A Special Visitor
On a very normal day,
something very strange
happened to Year 4.
We were told to come
into the hall where
there was a visitor
waiting. Dressed in
extremely
weird
clothes, she said her
name was Cleopatra
VIII. She told us all
about embalming and
sacrifices for animals.
We had to make
papyrus paper and
write our names in
hieroglyphics. There
were games and we
were learning all about
Egyptian jobs. It was
lots of fun! We all
enjoyed a well earned
lunch. After, we went
back into the hall and
watched the lady do a
funny dance!
Museum Trip
Luckily, we got to visit the
museum as part of our
Egyptian topic. There was
an art exhibit, a nature
exhibit with a study full of
books and another nature
room full of stuffed
animals. When we had
finished looking round we
joined
together
for
DINNER! We were all
greeted by an Egyptian lady
that time travelled to our
era! We got changed into
weird clothes and split into
half. Then one group went
to see the mummies. Our
favourite was called Pypylw
(Pep-ee-loo) and he was all
rotten! You could see his
head and feet! After that,
we swapped over. Then, the
Egyptian lady chose a child
to put a weird apron on. It
had the inside of the body
on it; it was gross! A few
people took the organs and
put them in canopic jars.
She gave us all a bandage
which we wrapped around.
Finally we got back to
school just in time for home
time! We all slept like logs
that night!

Oakwood Sport
Big Win for Oakwood Girls!
By Alex
One Thursday, Oakwood Junior School girls (year 5 and 6) took part in
Derby City’s Football tournament at Mackworth Sports Centre.
Determined they easily won the group stages. They then went to the
quarter finals and beat Cavendish Close. In the semi-finals, they won
which then put them through to the finals where they won 1-0 against
Portway Juniors. The whole team celebrated with a big hug for their super
coach, Miss Lawrence!
Tremendous Table Tennis Team!
By Ella
In the run up to the Derby City Table Tennis Finals, the Year 6 boys and girls team arrived at school
bright and early to prepare for their upcoming competition. On the day, they visited Derby Moor School
and played 12 games in mixed boy and girl doubles. Due to the popularity of the sport, we managed to
take 2 teams to the tournament. One team were runners up and the other team won the whole
competition! As they won the tournament, they went on to compete in the county finals in Chesterfield.
There they played four matches against each school. The boy’s team came second in the whole county!
Unluckily for the girls, they narrowly missed out on victory. Well done Oakwood!
All about Year 6
By Jessica & Blake
In year 6, we are visiting the Holocaust Museum on a
school trip to learn about our topic; World War Two. A
short time after that, some of us are going to White
More Lakes on a trip for three days. In our lessons we
are learning about Picasso and making our own
portraits. During our English lessons, we are discussing
and writing about whether we think children would be
evacuated if there was a World War three... What do
you think? Out in the playground, it has been very
energetic with sports such as netball, table tennis,
hockey and football. While the fun has been going on,
we have been practising for our SATs next year. In
music, we are presenting our own vlogs on singers
from all eras including: 1800s, 1900s, 2000s and
2010s.

The Snowman
Article by Ryan
One of my favourtie books
to read is the Snowman by
Rayond Briggs. It is about
a little boy at Chirstmas
who builds a snowman in
this garden. The snowman
comes alive on Christmas
Eve. The little boy goes
flying with the snowman
and meets all of his
snowman friends. The part
that made me laugh was
when the snowman went
inside the little boy’s house
and started to melt when he
went near the fire. The end
of the story is sad when the
snowman melts.

Crazy cartoons
The Lion and the Unicorn
By Lily
This book is by Shirley
Hughes. It is about a boy
called Lenny Levi who lives in
London. Due to the war, he
was evacuated to a more rural
area of England. Before he
leaves, Lenny’s dad gives him
a brass badge with a lion and a
unicorn on it. He ends up in a
large, dark and dusty hall
where he meets three mean
children. Sad and lonely,
Lenny goes into the garden
and comes across a statue of a
unicorn. This heart warming
story tells the tale of Lenny as
he meets a soldier who build
his confidence, teaches him
about bravery.
