Goal-directed Instructional Design Plan - Weather Report Author - Lisa Farrell 1. A problem or a need – there must be a problem of practice or an educational need that should be addressed during the lesson. ● A first/second grade content standard is for students to learn about weather and how it changes from day-to-day and throughout the different seasons. The goal is for students to learn about cold, warm, and hot temperatures, different forms of precipitation, wind, and cloud cover. 2. A real-world performance – how the learning objective fit into a real-world activity or need. ● Weather is a big part of our lives and impacts our day. It is important for students to 3. An instructional objective – the objectives are based on the final outcome, activity or test. These objectives will each be different for the four types of knowledge; performing skills, recalling facts, identifying examples of concepts, and applying principles. a. Identify and record weather features including temperature, precipitation, wind and cloud understand weather terms and how the weather can change from day-to-day. b. c. ● ● ● ● ● 4. cover for two days. Apply concepts to create a weather report. Record (perform) an audio podcast of a two-day weather report. S.IA.01.12 Share ideas about science through purposeful conversation. S.IA.01.13 Communicate and present findings of observations. S.IA.01.14 Develop strategies for information gathering. E.ES.E.2 Weather- Weather changes from day to day and over the seasons. E.ES.01.21 Compare daily changes in the weather related to temperature (cold, hot, warm, cool); cloud cover (cloudy, partly cloudy, foggy); precipitation (rain, snow, hail, freezing rain); wind (breezy, windy, calm). A set of essential content – the basic ideas and skills that will allow the learner to complete the task or understand the content. ● Prior to this lesson, students will learn the concepts of precipitation, temperature, wind and cloud cover through discussion, introduction, explanation and practice. 5. An evaluation consisting of a test or observation – an assessment, observation or product showing that the objectives can be accomplished in the real-world setting. ● The student’s final product of observing the weather and creating an audio podcast will be graded. The group will need to mention temperatures, precipitation, wind and cloud cover for two days. Michigan State University, Educational Technology Programs http://edutech.msu.edu 6. A method to help participants learn – the method to deliver the content; a lesson. Introduction- The teacher will begin by reviewing the concepts of temperature, precipitation, wind, and cloud cover. Then a weather forecast will be shown using the computer and docking system to project the images on a large screen. Instruction- The teacher will review with the class how to use thermometers, wind flags, and observe precipitation and cloud cover. Explanation- The teacher will explain the lesson to the students. Students will be asked to record the temperature, precipitation, wind, and cloud cover in small groups. On day two, groups will need to compile their weather data and write a short weather report. Then groups will practice reading their weather report and record an audio podcast with teacher assistance. Demonstration- The teacher will model how to record the weather on day one by doing a group report while students follow along using their own thermometers, wind flags, and eyes to observe the cloud cover and precipitation. Practice- In small groups students will work together to record the day two weather report. Then students will compile all data and write a weather report. Groups will work with the teacher to record their audio podcast. Conclusion- To conclude the lesson, the students will listen to other group’s weather reports. ● Motivation: Meaningfullness – content and activities must have meaning for the learner ● Students will learn about something that affects them everyday, as well as create a real weather report. Pleasant consequences – the effects that achieving the goal will have on the learner ● Students will have a better understanding and ability to discuss weather terms with other people. Also, the student will have an audio podcast to listen to again with family members at home. Novelty – an attention-getting, humorous or curious manner that relates to the useful information in your lesson ● ● Students will listen to a real weather report at the beginning of the lesson. Socialization - a strong motivator for student learning ● Students will have the opportunity to work in small groups and discuss the data they collected to create a weather report. Students will also listen to other audio podcasts created by their classmates. Consider the following: Age: 7-8 year olds (1st/2nd grade) Skill level (including technology skills) Students will need to be capable of writing complete sentences. Students need to be able to read simple sentences. Prerequisite knowledge (including technology background) Understanding of the following terms: Temperature- degrees Fahrenheit and describing word (hot, warm, cool, cold) Precipitation- rain, snow, sleet, hail Cloud cover- Sunny, mostly sunny, partly cloudy, cloudy, foggy Wind- Breezy, windy, calm ● Technology Needs Computer with audacity software and internal microphone. ● Internet access to watch real weather report. ● Computer docking system to display weather report on screen. ● Michigan State University, Educational Technology Programs http://edutech.msu.edu
