The French designer, Jean Zuber, whose firm is still in business today created this paper early in the 19th Century inspired by legendary scenic beauty. The paper was all printed by hand requiring 1,674 wooden blocks and hundreds of colors to create the pattern. Each block would be set in a press, inked with the appropriate color, and then applied to the paper. Through the generosity of Hon. Past President Stanley Deforest Scott, a limited number of prints taken from the Clinton room will be produced on high grade paper and inks which closely resemble the color and texture of a fine lithograph print (two samples are on display tonight). In addition, they partner with experts, including outstanding secondary school teachers; academics from the fields of American history, political science, and constitutional law; video producers; web site designers; and evaluation and curriculum experts. As a result of this combination of talent and experience, they are successfully educating high school students and teachers about our country’s Founding principles. 2009 Distinguished Knickerbocker Chapter DAR Patriot Ms. Vickie M azza USO Volunteer For forty-seven years Vickie Mazza has been supporting the men and women of our nation’s armed forces and their families. Vickie began her legacy of community service in the late 1950s as a volunteer for the YMCA. When the YMCA closed their 34th Street location in the 1960s, Vickie joined the USO where she remains today as one of their most exemplary volunteers and a critical part of the USO fabric. For over half a century, the USO has served as the primary bridge between American citizens and its Armed Forces, delivering a unique combination of morale building, counseling and recreational services to our troops and their families all over the world. While perhaps best known for its celebrity entertainment tours – the USO provides a remarkable array of vital services. Whether it is helping a young soldier find her way in a foreign airport or counseling a child whose parents are both overseas, the USO delivers a touch of home to military personnel and their families at a time when it is most needed and most welcomed. Vickie has served this vital organization by giving tens of thousands of hours greeting service members and their families at USO Service Centers. She can be found staffing the USO Center, participating in the many special USO events, delivering complimentary tickets to deserving service members, and doing whatever she can to provide comfort and aid to our troops and their families. Vickie faithfully welcomes service members and their families with tremendous appreciation and compassion for their sacrifices. Her knowledge of New York City serves as an invaluable asset to the USO as well as to the troops and families that she serves. She has touched the lives of so many through her compassion and commitment; selflessly and consistently going the extra mile for our armed forces and their families, that it is with great pride and pleasure that the Knickerbocker Chapter of the NSDAR bestows the Patriot Award to Ms. Vickie Mazza. Sons of R evolution Devoted to Educating the Public A bout the Struggle for A merican Liberty The Sons of the Revolution is an organization devoted to educating the public about the struggle to achieve American liberty Members are descendants of someone who fought in the Revolutionary War or otherwise placed themselves al risk for the American cause. The Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York owns and operates Fraunces Tavern® Museum, and also leases space for a first-class restaurant in the building. For 125 years, the society has been involved in preserving the memory of the Revolutionary Patriots. Major projects have included erecting the statue of Nathan Hale in City Hall Park, purchasing, restoring and preserving Fraunces Tavern®, purchasing and restoring Nathan Hale’s Schoolhouse in Connecticut and placing plaques and memorials at important Revolutionary War sites in New York City. The collections of the Sons of the Revolution and Fraunces Tavern Museum include more than 200 replicas of Revolutionary War flags, more than 50 valued paintings of the era, an extensive selection of weapons and equipment of the period, a substantial collection of 18th century furniture and furnishings, and personal effects of George Washington and his compatriots. The Library holds many significant documents, including orders signed by Washington, letters written by Hale and the orderly hook of Washington’s spymaster Benjamin Tallmadge. The Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York is the oldest society formed as a genealogical organization to promote the memory of the wartime sacrifices. Similar organizations were formed in other states and the New York Society and the Pennsylvania group, along with a newly created chapter in Washington, D.C., formed a General Society in 1890. A bout Fraunces Tavern® Museum Fraunces Tavern® Museum is a survivor of the early days of New York City. Now registered as a National Historic Landmark with the United States National Park Service, the building was originally built in 1719 as an elegant residence for the merchant Stephan Delancey and his family. In 1762, the home was purchased by tavern-keeper Samuel Fraunces, who transformed it into one of the most popular meeting places of the day. Though it is best known as the site where Washington gave his farewell address to the officers of the Continental Army, in 1783, the tavern also played a significant role in pre- and post-Revolutionary activities. After the war, when New York was the Nation’s first capital, the tavern was host to the new government’s offices of the Departments of War, Treasury and Foreign Affairs. In 1904, the Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York purchased the tavern and hired preservation architect William Mersereau to restore the building to its colonial appearance. Fraunces Tavern® Museum opened to the public in 1907. Today, the museum complex includes four 19th century buildings in addition to the 18th century Fraunces Tavern building. For over one hundred years, Fraunces Tavern® Museum has stood as an historic beacon to this city’s always changing landscapes and hopes to continue doing so for many years to come. We've nowhere its equal in beauty or style, (Just think of George Washington wearing a tile!) While this, graced the bow that swept down to the floor, The elegant hat that our ancestors wore. It matched the lace ruffles and black velvet suit, It had no brim to hinder the lovers’ salute, In the rich squire’s hall, by the cottager’s door, Hung this versatile hat that our ancestors wore. They carried it jauntily through the quadrille, They danced till the daylight and kept it up still, Then cocked it on tipsily – hindside before – This jolly old hat that our ancestors wore. In the hot summer’s sun, in the winter’s cold damp, In the smoke of the battle, the frost of the camp, In fight or in foray, it waved at the ‘fore, This gallant old hat that our ancestors wore. Then greet it with reverence, guard it with pride, ‘Tis the symbol of days when brave souls were tried; We hold it in honor and all it stands for, The noble old hat that our ancestors wore. – Edmund Wetmore PAST RECIPIENTS OF THE DISTINGUISHED PATRIOT AWARD (presented at the annual Washington’s Birthday Banquet) 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1970 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 Senator Barry Goldwater Hon. The army was encamped in the rugged Pennsylvania hills from December 19, 1777, to June 1778, when it followed up the British withdrawal from Philadelphia. The soldiers were so destitute of clothing that those assigned to drill work wore such as was available while on duty, and the others, almost naked, remained in their huts, wrapped in rags, old blankets, or whatever would protect them from the intense cold. Washington, daily, rode through the camp, to keep in touch with and encourage his men, and to do whatever was possible to alleviate their sufferings. Lafayette, who had recently joined the camp, was a member of the General’s official family, and frequently was his companion on these tours. The picture shows Generals Washington and Lafayette questioning one of the sentries at the Knox Artillery Camp, while a group of soldiers, variously clad, are seated about a blazing fire. Fort Huntington is in the distance on the right. The artist, John Ward Dunsmore, well-known painter of Revolutionary War subjects, was a member of this Society for 33 years. Our collection of paintings contains 40 of his works including this one of Lafayette and Washington. “Tu ne cede malis sed contra audentior ito” (Yield not to misfortunes —or evils— but advance all the more boldly against them) from Virgil’s Aeneid TU NE CEDE MALE SED CONTR A AUDENTIOR ITO The Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York honor the memories of Alejandro Berger, Fr ank Connor, Games Gezork and Harold Sherburne who lost their lives in the January 25, 1975 bombing of the Fr aunces Tavern®. The attack by Fuerzas Armades de Liber ation National Puertoriquenas (FALN) also injured more than 50 people in the Tavern and the adjoining Angler’s Club. The sacrifices of the bombing victims attest to the need for enduring vigilance against those who would inflict terrorist violence on the innocent. Composed by Ambassador G.
