CONNELLSVILLE AREA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS DIVISION OF MUSIC CONN E EA SENIOR H R A E L I L GH I V S S L L OOL CH CONNELLSVILLE BANDS Falcon BAND PROGRAM 2017-2018 HANDBOOK _________________________________________________________________________ NAME www.CAHSbands.org “Excellence” Excellence is never an accident. It is achieved in an organization or institution only as a result of an unending and vigorous insistence on the highest standards of performance. Excellence requires an unswerving expectancy of quality from the staff and volunteers. Excellence is contagious. It effects and affects everyone in the organization. Excellence charts the direction of a program. It establishes the criteria for planning. Excellence provides zest and vitality to the organization. Once achieved, excellence has a talent for permeating every aspect of the life of the organization. Excellence demands commitment and a tenacious dedication from the leadership of the organization. Once it is accepted and expected, it must be nourished and continually reviewed and renewed. It is a never-ending process of learning and growing. Excellence requires a spirit of motivation and boundless energy. It is always the result of a creatively conceived and precisely planned effort. Excellence inspires! Excellence electrifies! It potentializes every phase of the organization’s life. It unleashes an impact, which influences every program, every activity, every committee, and every staff person. To instill it in an organization is difficult, to sustain it is even more so. Excellence demands adaptability, imagination, and vigor. But most of all, it requires from the leadership a constant state of self-discovery and discipline. Excellence is an organization’s lifeline. It is the most compelling answer to apathy and inertia. It energizes a stimulating and pulsating force. Once it becomes the expected standard of performance, it nurtures a fiercely driving and motivating philosophy of operation. Excellence is a state of mind put into action. It is a road map to success. When a climate of excellence exists, all things – staff work, volunteer leadership, finances, program – come easier. Excellence in an organization is important…because it is everything. 2 CONNELLSVILLE BAND PROGRAM HANDBOOK TABLE OF CONTENTS WELCOME TO THE HIGH SCHOOL BAND PROGRAM!………..……………………… 4 MISSION STATEMENT, BAND MOTTO, OBJECTIVES, & EXPECTATIONS………….5-6 CONCERT BANDS SYLLABI…………………………………………………………...7-8 BAND PROGRAM ATTENDANCE AND MEMBERSHIP POLICY……………………9-10 REQUEST FORMS INFORMATION……………………………………………………..10 MARCHING BAND MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA………………………………………….11 GENERAL CONDUCT………………………………………………………………..12-13 REHEARSAL PROCEDURE AND DECORUM……………………………………….13-14 PERFORMANCES……………………………………………………………………15-16 SUMMER REHEARSALS AND EVENTS…………………………………………….17-19 PROGRAM SCHEDULE………….……………………………………………………...20 UNIFORMS AND CONCERT DRESS CODE…………………………………………21-22 BUS TRIPS AND TRAVEL DECORUM…………………………………………………..22 BAND BOOSTER PARENT ORGANIZATION…………………………………………..23 COMMUNICATION - CAHSBANDS.ORG & REMIND APP………………………...24-25 NOT RETURNING ON BUS FORM (marching students use only)…….……….…….26 BAND/ENSEMBLE EXCUSE FORM (all students use)…...…………………….……..27 MEDICAL FORM (marching students use only)……………………………….……..28 PARENT/GUARDIAN INVOLVEMENT SURVEY (marching students use only)........29 BAND PROGRAM REGISTRATION (all students turn in by March 24).…………….30 AGREEMENT AND COMMITMENT FORM (all students turn in by March 24)……..31 3 WELCOME TO THE HIGH SCHOOL BAND PROGRAM! Welcome to the 2017-18 edition of instrumental ensembles at Connellsville Area Senior High School! I am incredibly excited to build on the successes that the program has achieved last year! We have achieved so much, in every ensemble and it is exciting to be a part of it alongside all of you! We will continue to grow together. I am very eager to continue to grow along with this program, learning together and becoming stronger together. As the saying goes, if you’re not learning, you’re forgetting. If you’re not growing, you’re dying. To be as influential to our students as the stellar band directors of the past have been to me is one of my biggest goals. As is with any successful organization, excellence is never achieved by the efforts of only one person. Through the positive and collaborative energies of our band members, student leadership, drum majors, instructional staff, district-wide music department staff, school administration, and our booster parent organization, we together will continue to build upon Connellsville’s tradition of musical pride and excellence. Together, we must strive to become a beacon of positivity and pride, be an artistically relevant and musical force in our community and beyond, and strive to continue to strengthen the program, in order to provide the best, most well-rounded and fully developed music curriculum for the students in our school district. Mr. Jonathan Eutsey AREA SENIOR HI E L GH VIL S S LL OOL CH Best, CONN E I want your band experience (students AND parents) to be as positive and rewarding as possible. Taking a few minutes to get informed and stay current with everything that happens in the band will help to make your participation in the Connellsville Area Senior High School Instrumental Department one of the highlights of your high school experience! Falcon BAND PROGRAM 4 CONNELLSVILLE AREA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BAND PROGRAM HANDBOOK 2016-2017 MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Connellsville Area Senior High School Band Program is to make a positive difference in the lives of the band members by providing musical and visual experiences and performances, and to assist in achieving potential as they develop confidence, cooperation, leadership, responsibility, and high standards of both musical and personal excellence. BAND MOTTO “Be YOUR Best” “Be your Best” is a goal that everyone can achieve. It simply means that, Be YOUR Best! It is not the same as “Be THE Best”, which is something that few can achieve. It is all that is expected of you, but is expected all of the time – every minute, every rehearsal, every day, and every performance. Furthermore, it is expected that you “Be Your Best” outside of organized band activities, as well as rehearsals and performances. The best award we can receive is the complement that the band members were mature, well-mannered young ladies and gentlemen. We hear the complement frequently and want to maintain that tradition. You can measure your success and do not have to wait until someone else, like the director, student, squad, section leaders, or drum major tells you. You know! 5 OBJECTIVES & EXPECTATIONS Each member will strive for high musical standards of excellence, and to promote a means of creative expression through musical performance. BE YOUR BEST! Each member will strive to develop and improve the performance skills of their instruments. Each member will foster life skills which will contribute to the students overall education in preparation for post secondary careers including leadership, critical thinking, communication skills, and cultural and historical knowledge. • Each member will develop a sense of responsibility for attendance, preparation, and each other. o SHOW RESPECT § Respect yourself. Respect others. It results in an attitude of cooperation and mutual support. Even if you think someone is disrespecting you, always treat them with respect, because your actions represent the band. Respect the band facilities, equipment, and uniforms o BE PREPARED § Band members are responsible for doing their best, working on their individual skills, and practicing. All equipment MUST be brought to rehearsals as requested. o BE ON TIME § Students should arrive at the building 15 minutes before the call time of rehearsal, performances, bussing departure time, etc. § If you count on someone else to get a ride to practice, tell him or her the time you have to be there, not the time rehearsal begins. With this concept, you will be prepared physically and mentally to begin the rehearsal and not flying in at the last minute or worse – late. You will also have a cushion of safety if there is extra traffic or you are running a couple of minutes behind. § If you rely on someone else to get a ride and they cannot pick you up that day, it is your responsibility to coordinate secondary transportation plans. “I couldn’t get a ride” will not be marked as an excused absence and will be marked against you and towards expulsion from the band. o SHOW PRIDE § A sense of dignity and self-respect, is really the fundamental guideline of participation in the Falcon Band Program and a guide to responsibility. Those who have pride in themselves will do their honest best to give an effort at all times and will not engage in any activity that will degrade themselves or the organization. o SHOW SELF-DISCIPLINE § Self-discipline is the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of your emotional state. Selfdiscipline is one of the many personal development tools available to you. Self-discipline is like a muscle. The more you train it, the stronger you become. The less you train it, the weaker you become. Self-discipline requires an understanding of oneself and the awareness of the ways in which one can cope with difficulties, frustrations, and disappointments. Self-discipline affords a person the inclination to concentrate on a task as long as it is necessary to learn, perfect, or complete it. o HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE § Those who have pride in themselves will generally have a positive attitude. A positive attitude is characterized by a generally cheerful outlook towards rehearsals and performances, cooperation in the preparation and maintenance of facilities, and an eagerness to do what is necessary to be successful. Regardless of your ability, if your attitude is not a positive one, where you will do your individual best to improve and see the group be successful, you should not be part of this organization. Indeed, those who do not project a positive, cooperative attitude will be asked to change their manner or leave the group. Even the best performers, if they do not care about the good of the group, have no place here. 6 Symphonic & Concert Band Course Syllabus 2017-2018 School Year Mr. Jonathan Eutsey [email protected] www.cahsbands.org Concert Band Ensembles Course Descriptions Concert Band (9, 10, 11, 12) The Concert Band is a large ensemble musical experience that meets everyday, and will be offered to students that have had previous instrumental instruction. It is available for students who demonstrate the musical skills and competencies necessary to perform music ranging from grade 2.5 - grade 4 level of difficulty (on a scale of 1-6). Due to the range of musical skills of senior high musicians, placement into this ensemble is by audition and band director recommendation. Participation in group performances is required and may include public concerts, school concerts, and the commencement ceremony. Opportunities to audition for PMEA festivals, local honor band festivals, and adjudication festivals will be offered. Concert Band members are encouraged to participate in the marching band as a regular part of the program. Instrumental Lab lesson periods are recommended to be scheduled along with Concert Band in order to learn and master new skills to enhance eligibility for advancement to Symphonic Band for the next school year. Symphonic Band (9, 10, 11, 12) The Symphonic Band is a large ensemble musical experience that meets everyday, and will be offered to students that have had previous instrumental instruction. It is available for students who demonstrate the musical skills and competencies necessary to perform music ranging from grade 3 - grade 6 level of difficulty (on a scale of 1-6). Symphonic Band members are encouraged to participate in the marching band as a regular part of the program. A jazz ensemble experience may be offered to selected students. Instrumental Lab lesson periods are recommended to be scheduled along with Symphonic Band so students can learn and master more difficult playing techniques on an individual basis, which in turn, will increase the achievement level of Symphonic Band. Required Materials • • • • Instrument Supplies (extra reeds, valve oil, cork grease, slide oil, etc.) Music folder Pencil 7 Classroom Rules 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Arrive to class on time. Observe all rules in the band handbook and the CAHS student handbook. Concert Bands Attendance Policy Your attendance during class and at performances has a direct effect on your grade. Band is a participation/performance based course. Attendance is mandatory to all rehearsals and performances unless otherwise noted. Attached is a list of scheduled performance dates. Please be aware of these dates and plan accordingly! Concert Bands Grading Policy The student’s grade will be based on participation points, performances, and tests. Participation Points: Student will be awarded points for participation everyday. If student is prepared for class, on time, participates, and follows classroom rules and school policy, the student will receive all participation points. Failure to be prepared, tardiness, and inappropriate behavior will result in loss of participation points. Performances: All performances are mandatory. The director will provide the students with performance dates with ample time to make adjustments in schedule. Performance attendance will be a heavily graded aspect of the class. Unlike a written test, performances cannot be made up or reproduced. Additionally, the band is a group activity, where students must rehearse and perform in a collaborative fashion. Tests/Quizzes: These will be either performance-based or written and will take place during the class period. Students will be given prior notice to prepare before any test or quiz. Performance Guidelines • • • Be early for report times. Come prepared physically and mentally Have instruments/materials ready to go before report time. Concert Bands Dress Rehearsal and Performance Dates • Please check our website for more information on these events. www.cahsbands.org/events • Dates for the 2017-18 Band Concerts will be confirmed at a later date, and on the syllabus passed out by the first week of school. 8 HIGH SCHOOL BAND PROGRAM MEMBERSHIP AND ATTENDANCE POLICY MEMBERSHIP EXPECTATIONS 1. YOU have made a commitment to be in the band program for this school year. 2. EVERYONE is counting on YOU! a. The absence of one person not only affects that person but also the entire group. We are a complicated art form with many moving parts. When one is missing, the entire group is compromised. b. In the marching band, the critical factors of uniformity, balance, spacing, and alignment CANNOT be improved or maintained with absences. ATTENDANCE POLICY Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is expected. The only excuses acceptable are significant personal illness or true family emergency. Band members are expected to adjust their schedules and do homework around the rehearsal and performance schedule. The only additional excuse for missing a performance is the wedding or funeral of an immediate family member. Marching Band: If a student acquires an unexcused absence for the Thursday rehearsal before a performance, they will not perform in that performance the next day. There are two types of absences: Excused & Unexcused. • Unexcused absences for concert bands dress rehearsals and performances will result in the lowering of grades. 5% points is taken off of final grade for lateness to the concert/performance warmup, and 11% points are taken off final grade for an unexcused absence. • Unexcused absences for marching band may result in the suspension or termination of ensemble membership. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COORDINATE YOUR TRANSPORTATION AND A BACKUP TRANSPORTATION PLAN. Should you have a transportation problem, have a backup available such as a band member that lives nearby who could pick you up. EXCUSED ABSENCES (LEGITIMATE) • • • • Illness Family Vacation Accident Serious Illness/Death in the Family Students must provide an excuse note from a parent/guardian, or parent/guardians must email Mr. Eutsey with one of the previous “legitimate excuses” FOLLOWING the absence for it to be considered “excused” 9 Verbal communication WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED as a valid form of communicating absences. TELLING A FRIEND TO TELL MR. EUTSEY IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. Emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis for the protection of the member’s eligibility in the program. UNEXCUSED ABSENCE Unexcused absence from a performance is unacceptable and may result in either a drop in percentage points in concert band ensembles, or dismissal from the marching band, dependent on the ensemble in question. Absences, tardiness, or leaving early because of work or homework are not excused. Problems with absences, tardiness, or leaving early from rehearsal will be given appropriate consequences regarding performance opportunities. It is necessary that all members be prompt for all rehearsals and performances. “On time” is late. Early is on time! Being on time is a FAMILY responsibility! If a student comes to rehearsal or a performance without proper equipment, uniform, or materials, the individual will receive an “unexcused absence” for the event. Jobs are not a reason for missing rehearsal. The band schedule is published months in advance to allow you to adjust your work schedule. If you get a last minute call to fill in at work on a rehearsal or performance date, simply tell them you are not available at that time due to a prior commitment. See Mr. Eutsey for a written excuse if needed. The director, at his discretion, may suspend a student for one or more performances for failure to attend rehearsals or be on time for them. Example: If a member does not come to the Thursday rehearsal before a football game show, they will not perform in the halftime show. However, they will be required to come to the game and play in the stands (for the pregame show if it’s a home game). REQUEST FORMS BAND/ENSEMBLE EXCUSE FORM Requests to be excused from a future rehearsal or performance must be turned in at the earliest possible time (at least two weeks prior to the event) and will be considered by the director, pending the legitimacy of the case presented. Turn in a Band/Ensemble Excuse Form. A paper version of this form is on page 27 in this handbook. They are also located in the band room and can be filled out electronically at www.cahsbands.org/forms. The director reserves the right to dispute the request of a member to be absent, to ensure the policy is not abused. NOT RETURNING ON BUS FORM Members who wish to travel home from a performance site to home with their parents must fill out a Not Returning on Bus Form. This form is in this handbook, available in the band room, and can also be electronically submitted on www.cahsbands.org/forms. 10 MARCHING BAND MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA MUSICIANS For this 2017-18 edition of the marching band, students in grades 8-12 in the school district are eligible to be a musician member of the marching band. For musicians, marching band is an extracurricular activity. It is not a requirement to be a member of the marching band, but it is encouraged. However, it is required to be a member of a concert band ensemble in order to be a member of the marching band. Retention of membership is based solely on attitude, attendance, and performance. Musicians can be “docked” for their performance in a show for lack of attendance, poor performance, or anything the director deems negatively affecting the group. All musicians are strongly encouraged to take a school day band class (Symphonic Band, Concert Band, or Eighth Grade Band). ALL MUSICIANS must have training/instruction on their chosen instrument before being allowed into the marching band. This means completion of middle school band or recommendation of middle school band director or private instructor. VISUAL ENSEMBLE (COLORGUARD) For this 2017-18 edition of the marching band, students in grades 9-12 in the school district are eligible to tryout for one of our auxiliary squads. For auxiliary squad members, marching band is an extra-curricular activity. Retention of membership is based solely on attitude, audition, attendance, and performance. Once the audition is passed, students will be selected by audition rank until all spots are filled based on a predetermined number of spots. Auxiliary members can be “docked” for their performance in a show for lack of attendance, poor performance, or anything the director or auxiliary instructor deems negatively affecting the group. Auditions are final. All potential members of the auxiliary are required to pass an audition each year regardless of the prior years result. FOR ALL MEMBERS All members are to have and keep acceptable attendance records both in school and marching band rehearsals and performances. All members are required to have and keep an acceptable discipline record in school. All members are expected to have and keep their grades up to an acceptable level. MEMBERSHIP IN THE ENTIRE BAND PROGRAM IS A PRIVILEDGE, NOT A RIGHT. Any conduct deemed inappropriate, in violation of any expectations or rules in this handbook or school rules, or not contributing to the overall good of the group by a band member is subject to termination from any or all instrumental ensembles at Connellsville. 11 GENERAL CONDUCT NOTE: All rules in the high school student handbook are in force at all rehearsals, performances, and trips. Members of a prestigious organization, such as the Connellsville Area Senior High School Band Program, are expected to conduct themselves at all times in a decorous manner and to exercise common sense! Among considerations are: • ALL members are expected to follow the instruction of any teacher, instructor, or chaperone without question unless said instruction violates civil or moral law. o Should you be displeased with what is being requested, follow the request first, then, when the time is appropriate, bring your dissatisfaction to the attention of the band director. • Members should not play on or play with the instruments or equipment of others. Unfamiliarity leads to potential damage and a general lack of respect for the belongings of others. If you see someone picking up an instrument or equipment that is not theirs, remind them. • Members should not remove, play with, “hide” or take any or all/parts of the uniforms or instruments of others members. o The uniform is an obviously important part of our performance presentation. If you have a problem with your uniform, don’t take someone else’s. See your squad leader or the director. Take care of your uniform! If you see someone doing something with their own or other’s uniform that they should not, tell them and then report it to the band director. • Members should show respect for others by being judicious in displays of affection. An impassioned embrace is more properly shared in privacy rather than a group. o Your guideline should be: “Would my parents be embarrassed if they were here?” and “Would anyone who is here be embarrassed?” • Anytime there is a critical incident or incidents involving police agencies or other authorities, the band director is to be notified immediately! • Members must take care to not get into any private vehicle from the time they arrive for a rehearsal, performance, or trip until the time they are released from the rehearsal, performance, or trip. This is especially important when we are on site at a performance or overnight trip. Regardless of who it is, friend, relative, or someone “friendly”, do NOT get into a private vehicle. • Whenever we are on site at a performance or an overnight trip, band members should move from place to place in groups. DO NOT go by yourself. • Whenever we are on site at a performance or an overnight trip, band members are NOT to leave the site. Do NOT take it upon yourself to take off and explore. • Any injury that occurs from the time you arrive for any rehearsal, performance, or trip until such time that you are released from that rehearsal, performance, or trip must be reported to the band director immediately! 12 • There will be NO smoking by any band member at any band activity, function, or trip. • Members that conduct themselves in a boisterous manner at rehearsals, performances, or on trips will be asked to refrain from such behavior or be removed from the group. • Band members in possession of, use of, or distribution of controlled substance(s) will be disciplined according to the Connellsville Area School District Drug/Alcohol Policy. Possession of, use of, or distribution of controlled substance(s) will also result from immediate dismissal from the organization. REHEARSAL PROCEDURE AND DECORUM It is necessary for us to maximize our rehearsal time in order to achieve our performance goals. • The rehearsal schedule is set well in advance, allowing adequate time to plan other activities and obligations around the established schedule. • Our goal of musical excellence and performance excellence can only be attained if each member looks at that rehearsal with our end goal in mind. A band member missing a rehearsal NOT ONLY does not improve, but those on either side of him/her will have a largely unproductive rehearsal because of the absence. Everyone is essential! • It is imperative that band members be at ALL rehearsals except when prevented by significant personal illness or true family emergency. Students are expected to plan personal and family activities around the rehearsal schedule. While homework is very important, band members must learn to budget their time in order to accomplish their homework and still make rehearsal obligations. This may require starting homework earlier than you are accustomed to or working later on some evenings, but it can be done without a great deal of difficulty by carefully planning your time. Homework is not an acceptable excuse for missing rehearsal; rehearsal is not an acceptable excuse for not doing homework! • BEING ON TIME for the start of rehearsal is a necessity. Plan your departure time from home and any carpooling to arrive at school WELL BEFORE the start of rehearsal. Getting out on time requires that we start on time. • EVERYONE shares in the responsibility of setting up for rehearsal and helping to clear the area afterwards. Setting up yard markers, ladder, podium, sound equipment, and percussion equipment is considerably easier when everyone pitches in to help. We help ourselves by expediting setup and clean up and have a feeling of contributing to the betterment of the whole. • It is important that we respect the facility that has been made available to us for rehearsal and take care of it appropriately. DO NOT leave paper or other trash on the floor or walls. It takes only a little more effort to see that it gets into the proper receptacle. If we all help here, we won’t have any problems and will all benefit from clean and pleasant surroundings. 13 • It is important that no one engage in any destructive activity. Sometimes this can be an all but conscious act, like playing on a wall, locker, or door with drum sticks or bumping things with horns or equipment. Other times, it is a more overt act such as throwing drum sticks at the ceiling, throwing food or gum at a wall, stopping up drains in a washroom sink or drinking fountain. A really classy organization with mature members will have none of this. It is everyone’s responsibility to see that these things do not occur. If you see it, stop it. If they won’t stop, inform the band director immediately. • It is important that everyone be sensitive to the security of the band room, individual belongings, and the school building. Do not leave purses and other valuables in the band room or any other room unsecured. If you see anyone in the band room or anywhere in the building that is the least suspicious or out of place, inform the band director, another staff person, or school official immediately. Security is everyone’s business. • First year marching band members will have an upperclassman assigned to them as a tutor to help with music and/or marching skills. If you are having problems, don’t pull away. Ask for help. Everyone involved wants the group to be better, and that will only happen by everyone taking the responsibility for improvement. • Every band member is expected to have his/her instrument in working order and all other materials at all rehearsals. Pride and progress go hand in hand with preparation. Be ready for rehearsal! • The summer marching band rehearsal schedule is published well in advance! Summer rehearsals serve three functions. First, they keep everyone playing their instrument. Second, we continue to develop musically while getting to know one another better, and thirdly, they enable us to learn the music for the fall so that when we get to band camp, we can concentrate on the integration of the marching and music facets of our field show. These rehearsals are VERY IMPORTANT! We need to have everyone who is not on vacation present for all the rehearsals. THIS IS WHERE WE CAN REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR PREPARATION, AND IN RAISING THE BAR OF EXCELLENCE! • BAND CAMP REHEARSALS ARE MANDATORY. Students who cannot be present for band camp will not be written into the show. The band camp time is absolutely critical! See the band camp section for further information. • Because of limited marching band rehearsal time, it is necessary that the marching band rehearse regardless of the weather. Band members should dress accordingly! If there is drizzle or intermittent rain, we will often march. Very hot weather will not keep us from rehearsing but may cause us to take more frequent breaks. Cold weather is a seasonal hazard in our climate and will not prevent us from rehearsing. We must often perform under similar conditions! We will not normally rehearse outdoors in heavy rain but will rehearse indoors and go out at the first opportunity. Rehearsal is NEVER cancelled because of the weather. Again, dress for the weather! • One or two after school rehearsals will be scheduled prior to each band concert to rehearse the combined bands selection(s). Ample notice will be provided (Symphonic Band and Concert Band). 14 PERFORMANCES Our numerous performance opportunities include: football games, parades, marching band festivals, band concerts, small ensemble performances. BAND CONCERTS Band concerts are given on two occasions each year; early/mid December, and Mid-May by the Concert Band and Symphonic Band, and any prepared small ensembles. Additionally, any band may be called upon at any time to perform for the student body as a part of the school assembly programs. The Concert Band and Symphonic Band combine forces at the end of the school year and provide music for the Commencement Ceremony. In addition to the Winter and Spring Concerts, this is also a required performance. The concert bands are the very core of the instrumental program. All other ensembles are extracurricular and are a direct reflection of the progress and achievement level of both the Concert and Symphonic Band. Preparation for band concerts and other performances provide excellent opportunities for students to learn about and perform a wide variety of historically significant and musically rewarding compositions. Student musicians are expected to continue the high level of commitment and cooperation required of them during marching season. FOOTBALL GAMES The “Mighty Falcon Marching Band “performs at all home and away football games. For home games, the band marches into the stadium as a group, performs the Falcon Victory March Fight Song, National Anthem, and School Alma Mater at pregame, plays the Falcon Victory March Fight Song as the football team comes on the field. The band sits together in the stands to support the efforts of the team. We will play stand music for the audience at appropriate times, as directed by the band director and drum majors. At halftime, we will perform our halftime show or other material prepared for homecoming and senior night events, and then return to sit through the second half of the game as a group, playing stand music. At the conclusion of the game, we will march back to the trailer as a group before being dismissed. For away games, the band travels to the game site together and sits together in the stands for both halves of the game. When we are at football games, band members, instructional staff, and chaperones are expected to conduct themselves in a decorous manner (see General Conduct section). The uniform will stay complete and neat unless the band director instructs otherwise. Band members will check with the band director when it is necessary for them to go to the restroom or to leave the seating area for any reason. Only a few students will be dismissed at any one time and these students must be accompanied by a chaperone. During cold weather, bring heavy gloves, warm hats, heavy coats, warm blankets, and such for protection against the weather. These should match the school colors, so we still have a sense of uniformity and school spirit. 15 PARADES Parades are a necessary part of our activity as they serve a community function and give us great public relations/exposure within our immediate area and abroad. We normally participate in parades only in our local area. Typically, we participate in the Connellsville Halloween, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day Parades. When special one-time community parades come up, they are considered on an individual basis. MARCHING BAND FESTIVALS Band Festivals are always a very enjoyable experience! It is always great to watch the shows of other neighboring marching bands! When we are in attendance, it is of highest importance that we are as respectful as possible, and not only give a great impression of our band through our performance, but also how we conduct ourselves in the stands. Our image depends upon every individual. Our public manner, appearance, and projection of pride and organization are everyone’s responsibility! We must make sure that we represent the city of Connellsville and the Connellsville Area School District in the most positive way imaginable. SMALL ENSEMBLES All members of the Symphonic Band are encouraged to participate in a small ensemble; a trio, quartet, etc. Small ensemble experience is encouraged for all members of the band. If the performance level of a piece becomes concert level, they will be given permission to perform it at the next band concert. INDOOR PERCUSSION AND WINTERGUARD COMPETITIONS EA SENIOR H LE AR IGH L I V S S LL OOL CH CONN E All members of the grades 8-12 percussion program are encouraged to audition for membership in our indoor percussion marching ensemble. NUTRITION • • • MAKE SURE YOU EAT A HEARTY BREAKFAST! We will be burning a lot of energy in our rehearsals, and you will need the fuel to sustain you. BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH. Students are not permitted to leave the school campus for lunch each day. Band Camp is NOT the time to go on a diet. The long strenuous hours in the heat can be very demanding on the body. This is a time to eat carefully and well. Drink plenty of clear liquids. Bringing a water jug or bottle is a wise choice. Members can place it on the sidelines of the rehearsal field while we rehearse. WEATHER • • Hats are is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Keep your brain and your face from frying! Bring a good sun screen for your body and sun block for your lips. Trying to play with sunburned lips is extremely difficult. When worn properly, it projects dignity and authority. It is everyone’s responsibility to see that all members respect and care for the uniform and that it is worn properly. Uniforms will be issued at summer rehearsals before Band Camp. From this point on through the end of the school year, you must be sure you always have the correct uniform parts, and hang up the uniform properly after every wearing. Band members are to handle only their own uniform. Problems often develop from others “putting things away”. Should, for whatever reason, part of your uniform be missing when you go to put it on, do not take someone elses! Report your problem to the band director. You are financially responsible for the uniform and will be charged the replacement cost of the missing part(s) or damaged part(s). UNIFORM CARE • • • • • • • • • • • • • • The uniform is to be worn with collar fastened and the zipper fully closed whenever in the public eye. When hung on a hanger, care must be taken that the jacket is straight on the hanger and that the collar is fastened and the zipper closed. The pants are to be hung carefully so to preserve their appearance and maintain the crease. If the knee becomes dirty, they need to be cleaned before the next wearing. If you put them away dirty, they will still be dirty when you take them out again. The hat is to be worn on the front of the head, not hanging off the back. The chin strap is to be buckled under the chin to hold the hat in place. The hat will remain on until you receive instructions to remove it. When putting your hat away, be sure you get the correct box! Each woodwind and brass player must purchase at least one pair of white gloves. It is recommended to own two or three pairs and rotate them. Gloves must be kept clean or be replaced. Each band member will be required to purchase a pair of black Drillmaster marching shoes. Colorguard, please refer to Mrs. Winwood for instruction on this. Shoes are to be HIGHLY polished for all performances. Wind, Percussion, and Honor Guard members must have black socks. No visible jewelry, including earrings, is to be worn during marching performances unless it is part of the performance costume. No colored nail polish is to be worn where visible (woodwinds, percussion and auxiliary members. All auxiliary members hair is to be braided/styled for performances. WE MUST LOOK SHARP! STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING THEIR UNIFORM CLEAN AND NEAT ESTIMATED UNIFORM REPLACEMENT COSTS Jacket = $350 Pants = $80 Hat = $30 Plume = $19 Auxiliary prices vary from year to year. See Mrs. Winwood. THE UNIFORM IS TO BE TRANSPORTED AT ALL TIMES IN A GARMENT BAG. 21 CONCERT BANDS DRESS CODE Concert Band and Symphonic Band will wear concert black for all performances. This dress code is mandatory for participation in these ensembles. LADIES: Concert black dress or black top and pants, black hosiery and black dress shoes. GENTLEMEN: Black tuxedo jacket or black sport coat (not required but preferred), black pants, black dress shirt, black bow-tie, black shoes and black socks. BUS TRIPS AND TRAVEL DECORUM Sign up for bus seating will be by class. (Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen, 8th Graders). It will remain the same for the entire school year. Exception: if we take coach buses for long trips. New seating will then be arranged. Students will not change busses for any reason once these lists are created. Bus chaperones will have bus lists and will call the role before each departure. Students will cooperate by remaining quiet and answering only to their name. All riders on the bus must be sensitive to all members in the vehicle. The noise level must be kept moderate to quiet to allow others to rest and concentrate on their pending performance. iPods/CD players/music on phones must be used with earphones. Activity on the bus must be thought through so that you do not endanger yourself or others or cause disturbance to others. ALL BAND MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THEIR BUS CHAPERONES! If they request that you should be less noisy or that you should refrain from a specific activity, you are to obey them immediately! • It is necessary that we keep the busses clean. Pick up all trash. Don’t wait for someone else to do it. • Profanity while with the band will not be tolerated. Make sure your language is never offensive. Think before you speak. There is no excuse for rude, obnoxious behavior. • Kindness and courtesy work miracles in almost every situation. Remember that “PLEASE” and “THANK YOU” cost you nothing and yet are highly valued, especially when received from young people. • There shall be no action for which an explanation is necessary. If you think someone might ask you “Why did you do that?”, then don’t do it. • Violations of these rules will result in disciplinary action that could include removal from the organization, detention, or suspension. 22 BAND BOOSTER PARENT ORGANIZATION The Connellsville Area Senior High School Band Booster Parent Organization is a wonderful group of parents who work very hard to assist and promote the band program at Connellsville. All parents/guardians of band members (Marching Band/Symphonic Band/Freshman Band/Indoor Percussion and Winterguard) are welcomed and encouraged to participate in this organization once their child becomes a member of the band. The Band Parent Organization organizes all of the fundraisers, which are held throughout the year. They also supply the band with chaperones for football games, parades, festivals, and band trips. Their main objective is to help and promote the band’s activities. The Band Parents are vital to the success of the Connellsville Band Program. Without them, we would not be able to do many of the things we do! Here are some things parents can do to help the band through the booster organization: • • • • • • • Attend Band Parent Booster Meetings. The general meeting is held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm in the Band Room. Volunteer for Committees. There are many different tasks that need to be done and we could use your help. Some of these tasks include chaperones/travel, telephone/publicity, uniform, ways and means, band banquet. Be supportive of the band program and your child’s participation by: Assisting your child to be prepared and punctual for every rehearsal and performance. Notifying the director if your child is going to be absent or late for a rehearsal or performance. This should be done in advance with a Band/Ensemble Excuse form (Included in this handbook), unless in an absolute emergency. (See Attendance) Encouraging your child to practice at home & helping them find a quiet place to do so. Showing your interest and support in your child’s music study by enthusiastically attending every performance possible. Arranging for private lessons for your child if at all possible. Come to the Band Booster meetings and familiarize yourself with the Band Parent Booster Organization Constitution and By-Laws to make sure you understand the way things are run. The Band Booster Parent Organization Executive Committee is made up of elected officers and the Band Director. The Executive Committee is responsible for the overall organization and planning of band booster activities. It is our great hope that ALL of the band member’s parents and/or guardians will volunteer to help the Executive Committee with the many activities that go on throughout the year. If every parent/guardian would volunteer to help with one activity, no one would have to do too much! Besides, what a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends! The Parent/Guardian Involvement Survey is included in this handbook. Please be sure to fill it out and turn it in to the Band Director. You might be asked to help load equipment or build props for the show. You might be asked to bake cookies or donate food for our Fayette Fair food booth! (Homemade are always better than store bought!) Maybe you could help organize a fundraiser or sell concessions at the fair booth! This is just the tip of the iceberg. Come out and support the band! If you have any questions, please ask! 23 COMMUNICATION WHEN YOU HAVE A QUESTION When a “band question” arises, it is important that you get factual information before discussing it with others. We do more harm to ourselves, the band family, when we talk about things that contain one or more “falsehoods” but consider them facts. When questions arise, it’s important to remember this: • If it is a performance issue, or anything dealing with the band, or its members, contact Mr. Eutsey. (Remind App or [email protected]) • If it is a fundraising question, or anything dealing with parent issues, talk with the band booster president. CAHSBANDS.ORG All of our up-to-date information is available on the band’s website, www.cahsbands.org. This website has the band calendar, upcoming events, information about our ensembles, fundraising information, contact information, and all forms. The Band/Ensemble Excuse form, Not Returning on Bus form, and Chaperone Agreement form can all be submitted electronically on this website. We also have a Facebook page. Please be sure to “like” it so that you receive updates about the band on your news feed. “Mighty Falcon Marching Band” HOW PARENTS CAN HELP THE PROGRAM • • • • • • • • • • • • Show an interest in the music study of your child o Arrange a regular time for your child to practice o Find a quiet place where he/she can practice without interruption o Help the student keep a “DAILY RECORD” of practicing o Come up with a reward system for DAILY practice Keep the instrument in good repair and keep at least three reeds (for clarinet/saxophone players) in the case. Be extra-careful with school-owned instruments. REPAIR COSTS ARE HIGH! Teach your child to be prepared and on time to each rehearsal or lesson. Provide private lesson instruction. If you need contact information on instrumental instructors in the area, ask the band director. Make faithful attendance at all band activities important. Keep the handbook in a safe place, and refer to it often. Notify the Band director if the student is to be absent for rehearsals or lessons. Fill out a “Band/Ensemble” Excuse form (in this handbook) and turn in to the Band Director at least 2 weeks before the absence, for review of possible approval. Attend booster meetings, concerts, games, parades, and festivals. TURN IN FUNDRAISER MONEY ON TIME! Be well informed and sign up for the Remind App on your smartphone or email. Instructions on the next page. Fill out the Parent/Guardian Involvement Survey in this handbook and turn in to the Black Box in the band room. 24 • 25 NOT RETURNING ON BUS FORM MARCHING BAND MEMBERS ONLY _________________________________________________________________________________________________ THIS FORM CAN ALSO BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY @ WWW.CAHSBANDS.ORG/FORMS Student Name(s): __________________________________________________________ Name of Parent/Guardian Transporting Student(s): ________________________________ Parent/Guardian Cell Phone # : _________________________________ Parent/Guardian Transporting Student Cell Phone #__________________________________ Parent Email: ___________________________________________________________ Date: __________________________ Name of Event: ______________________________________________________ ☐ By checking this box, I am certifying that I am the legal parent/guardian of the above mentioned student and I give my permission for that student to ride with the above mentioned parent or guardian. __________________________________ _________________________________ STUDENT SIGNATURE PARENT/GUARDIAN SIGNATURE 26 BAND/ENSEMBLE EXCUSE FORM ____________________________________ THIS FORM CAN ALSO BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY @ WWW.CAHSBANDS.ORG/FORMS PLEASE SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF THE DATE IN QUESTION.
