ANNUAL REPORT
Saddleback College Foundation
2014 • 2015
THANK
YOU!
PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGES
Dr. Tod A. Burnett
President, Saddleback College
I
n last year’s annual report, we described our foundation’s progress as transformational. This year has continued our trajectory. Total giving to the
foundation was up 31%, or $721,261 in 2014-2015, primarily due to increased
endowed and major gifts. We had 12 new scholarship endowments for the year,
representing over $156,000 in additional contributions. Over the past six years
the number of endowments has grown from 49 to 85. Our total of scholarship
endowments is now $3,137,582, and our total endowment is $6,407,247. Major
gifts included an estate pledge from Emeritus student Jane Clark, of $1.2 million
to be split between the Emeritus Institute and Nursing. We received a $250,000
additional gift from Sue and Bill Gross for the Gross Scholars scholarship program. Student scholarship awards totaled over $732,000, making Saddleback
one of the largest scholarship programs in the California community college
system. 449 students received scholarships, up from 405 students last year. The “Saddleback First Gala,” held
on March 14, 2015 at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort and Spa had over 500 guests, the largest number to
attend in our gala’s 15-year history, which was an 11% increase over the previous year. It is a great achievement
to have capped last year’s annual report, and it would not have happened without the dedicated support of our
community, donors, students, faculty, staff and friends. You are making Saddleback. First a reality!
Michael S. Hamilton
President, Saddleback College Foundation
J
im Leach has served for five years on the foundation board of governors. His
dedication and support as president of the board over the past three years
has made a huge contribution to the success that Dr. Burnett outlines above.
I would like to personally thank Jim for his visionary guidance and undaunting
leadership.
I belong to the Saddleback College Foundation board because I have seen
the difference the college can have on the path of a student’s life. Where
we end up in life is in large part determined by choices we make earlier
in our lives and the opportunities that are available to us. I have talked with
current students and alumni and heard countless stories about how a member of the college faculty helped open their eyes to new possibilities. I have
heard how students lives have been impacted by a non-faculty staff member who helped with an aspect of
financial assistance that made the difference in their ability to attend Saddleback College. I have seen many
students go on to study at some of Southern California’s top four-year schools with an academic foundation
that will serve them well throughout their lives. Simply said, I serve on this board because Saddleback College
impacts the trajectory of people’s lives, creating opportunities that many never considered possible. One of the
most important statistics for me is the foundation’s reach. To be helping 449 scholarship recipients to achieve
their dreams, to be giving nearly 90 Gross scholars who fall in the forgotten middle, a step up, to be establishing
gifts in perpetuity to help students into the future, these are all vital and encouraging. Five students spoke at
Saddleback College Commencement this year. Of the five, four had been awarded scholarships which enabled
them to stay in College and ultimately go on to be their class valedictorians.
I want to thank all of you who have made that possible. The foundation values its community partners who
include our cities, local and national businesses, educational partners, faculty and staff, alumni, current students,
and all those who generously give. It is a privilege to be able to put your generosity to work here at Saddleback
College. A solid educational foundation may be the most direct and powerful way to touch someone’s life.
I hope you enjoy reading the accomplishments of the foundation this year.

GROSS SCHOLARS PROGRAM UPDATE
Left to Right: Gross Scholars and
Dr. Tod A. Burnett express their thanks.
L
ast year, Sue and Bill Gross established a
wonderful scholarship program to help
Saddleback College students in the “forgotten
middle” of the socioeconomic spectrum. A total
gift of $490,000 has already assisted scores of
students with the transition into skilled jobs.
Sue Gross, the Gross Family Foundation President,
said, “The additional funds will enable us to expand
our investment in our students, and strengthen
our regional economy with a trained and skilled
workforce…These scholarships will help to alleviate
the financial burden many students carry as they
juggle college and family life, allowing them to
focus on their training without the stress of finding
the money to pay for their education.”
These scholarships assist students in Career
Technical Education (CTE) programs such as
automotive technology, cinema/TV/radio, medical
assistant, and nursing. CTE programs (typically
two years) open opportunities for students to
secure living-wage jobs. The Gross Scholars
program helps diverse student populations:
veterans, displaced workers, other adult learners,
and eligible high school seniors. These scholars
range in age from 20 to nearly 60 and are resilient,
hard-working individuals — often nontraditional
students who return to higher education to
achieve their goals.

Foundation Annual Report 2014-15
he 39th annual scholarship ceremony at
Saddleback College celebrated more than
$732,000 in awards to 449 deserving students.
Scholarship recipient Kamran Sadaghiani addressed
the audience of over 800 students, family members,
and donors about the unique struggles of returning
veterans. Dean Terence Nelson described the impact
of scholarship giving on both student and donor.
Jacqueline and Deanna Smerdel, mother and
daughter, recounted their shared educational experience and impending transfer to a four-year university,
and Min Kim spoke of pursuing education in the face
of financial challenges. Dr. Tod A. Burnett, president
of Saddleback College, congratulated all of the
students for their academic achievement, service to
the community, leadership, and talent. Dr. Burnett
said, “The generosity of our donors makes the entire
event possible, and I thank them for their support
of Saddleback and our students, who benefit greatly
from their kindness.” The individual donor of the year
Donald Greenspan and the organization donor of the
year San Clemente Men’s Golf Club were also recognized (donors of the year are discussed elsewhere
in this report). Since 1976, when scholarships totaled
just $12,000, the foundation has awarded more than
$5.5 million to Saddleback College students thanks
to the generous gifts of our donors.

SCHOLARSHIPS
INDIVIDUAL DONOR OF THE YEAR
DONALD GREENSPAN
“Saddleback is our family’s college,” Donald
Greenspan said as he accepted the 2014-2015
individual donor award. A retired business executive and business owner, he turned to Saddleback
College to honor his wife after she passed away in
April of 2014. Julienne Callahan Greenspan was a
proud Saddleback College alumna, and Don and
Julienne’s children, Daniel and Jennifer, also attended
Saddleback College. Don donates $4,000 annually
to provide two scholarships, one for a journalism
student and the other for an art student — these are
the subject areas Julienne loved. These scholarships
will continue in perpetuity as he has included funds
in his estate plan to endow them. In addition to the
generous scholarships, he provides additional support to the journalism and art programs.
ORGANIZATION DONOR OF THE YEAR
SAN CLEMENTE MEN’S GOLF CLUB
In 2008 the San Clemente Men’s Golf Club
Endowed Scholarship was established. In 2010, a
unique opportunity was presented to all community
colleges through the generosity of the Bernard
Osher Foundation. The club seized the opportunity
and created the San Clemente Men’s Golf Club
Osher Endowed Scholarship. Doug Barr, counselor at
Saddleback, has been integral to the setting up
and development of his endowment. Doug said
“I’m a firm believer that the character built during
ones commitment to golf is a solid fit with what’s
necessary for a productive education and citizenship.”

STUDENT PROFILE • DEANNA AND JACQUELINE SMERDEL
his mother and daughter duo shared their
powerful story at the 2015 scholarship
ceremony. Deanna and Jacqueline relocated
to Southern California to begin a new and better life.
Overcoming personal and financial difficulties, they
pursued a mutual dream of investing in themselves.
After discovering the opportunities available to nontraditional students, they enrolled at Saddleback
College together and maintained exceptional
grades. Both plan to transfer to Grand Canyon
University to pursue psychology degrees. Jacqueline
said “It seemed like a miracle when someone wanted
to give me money for an education! That had never
happened before and it could not have been better
timing.” Deanna continued “As well as the financial
side, receiving scholarships was really encouraging.
For all the doubts I had about starting a new career
and going back to school, being awarded a
scholarship is like someone saying, “Good job! I
believe in you! Keep going!” Jacqueline finished
“I will admit that there were times when I was just
tired. But I couldn’t quit because these people
believed in me — believed in us. We couldn’t let them
down.” Between them, Deanna and Jacqueline were
awarded the Mission Viejo Endowed Scholarship,
the American Association of University Women
scholarship, in memory of Kitty Lindeman and the
American Association of University Women, San
Clemente/Capistrano Bay branch scholarship.
“The support of the scholarship program has
helped us in more ways than I think the
donors could have imagined.”

tours in Southeast Asia and one in Afghanistan.
Kamran is active in the Veteran Student Council
and was instrumental in establishing a new scholarship for veterans in 2015. The council designed the
scholarship to disburse funds late in the semester
to help veterans during breaks between academic
sessions. Kamran credits Saddleback College’s
dedicated staff, special programs, and scholarships
with helping him define his own success. Kamran
is also a scholarship recipient and was awarded
the National Science Foundation S-STEM scholarship in 2014 and the Disabled Veteran Scholarship
in 2015.
“Saddleback College has given us all the much needed encouragement
and support essential to our quest for a college education. Although Veterans
have been trained to be self-sufficient and to figure it out with a
mission-minded mentality, they still need help through the transition.”

recipient Lidya personifies the persistence
of many community college students.
A single mother of two young children, after overcoming some setbacks, including car trouble that
left her taking 10 buses a day to get to and from
school, she is transferring to Cal State Fullerton in
the fall. Lidya has a passionate interest in art and
especially enjoyed her work as an assistant to the
curator of the Saddleback College art gallery.
“I cannot really say how much this scholarship
means to me. It is critical to fulfilling my genuine
aspiration to succeed in the field of art and become
a full and contributing member of society, and a
provider and role-model for my children. I am most
pleased to say that I have worked through many of
my challenges and my life has achieved a new equilibrium.” Lidya was awarded the Eleanor Greenberg

NEW BOARD MEMBERS
Dr. Morgan Barrows is a Saddleback College
faculty member. She joined the board because she has
always believed in giving back, particularly through
education. Morgan supports several scholarships,
including the endowed MorganTree scholarship, at
the foundation and is a professor of environmental
studies at Saddleback College with her Ph.D. in
Environmental Analysis, University of California, Irvine,
2007. Morgan says “My goal is not only to educate students about environmental issues, but also to teach
social responsibility. It is important for people to learn
that their actions have consequences, both good and
bad. Students also learn that the human species is a
part of nature and everything we do affects it. I truly
believe that the solution for many of our environmental
problems lies with education.”
Dr. Jeanne Harris-Caldwell is the director of
the Health Center here on campus at Saddleback
College. Jeanne has been integral to setting up the on
campus food bank, and excels in connecting students
in need with the resources to help them. Jeanne
recently completed her Doctorate from Chapman
University — Brandman School of Organizational
Leadership. Dr. Harris-Caldwell’s dissertation study
focused on the identification of mental health
behaviors of community college students in order to
decrease violence. Violent behaviors covered in her
research included suicide, anger, domestic violence
and stalking. The purpose of the study was to gather
the baseline data that will aid in the design of programs or services to be implemented to decrease
violence at community colleges. Jeanne reports
“I believe in any leadership role you must engage
in lifelong learning in order to provide visionary
leadership.”

T
he Saddleback College Veterans Memorial
is an important fixture on the campus.
Since its 2010 dedication, the memorial has
served as a cool, quiet place for reflection and
remembrance. Designers Richie White, Saddleback
ceramics professor, and Fred Olson employed
a “firing in place” ceramic technique, used for
hollow sculptures that are too large to fit in a
conventional kiln. The memorial’s orientation
places the central figure of a soldier in direct sunlight at 11:00 a.m. each November 11, in keeping
with the many references to Veterans Day incorporated into the design. Donors contributed not
only $200,000 in funds, but also their memories
inscribed on the individual pavestones that
surround the sculpture.
Students in the business and entrepreneurship
program presented a memorial paver for veteran
and military dogs during the 2015 dog fair. Funds
went to support Orange County no-kill shelters
and dog rescues. The fair offered adoption opportunities and demonstrations by the sheriff’s K-9
unit, Guide Dogs of America and veteran military
trainers. Trustee and veteran Dr. James Wright
presented a special paver honoring military dogs.
These dogs locate bombs, protect troops, and
provide security; some are wounded or killed in
the line of duty. Bill, a retired Air Force dog, represented his canine peers at the ceremony, accompanied by his adoptive parent. The fair included
competitions and prizes for the top dogs.
Professor White, a beloved teacher, passed away in
February 2015. During his 26 years at Saddleback
College, he imparted to thousands of students a
love for the arts. The Veterans Memorial, one of the
largest freestanding ceramic pieces in the US, is a
fitting reminder of his creativity and artistic skill.
The Saddleback community celebrated his life with
a potluck and New Orleans-style march culminating
at the memorial, and a scholarship in his name
raised more than $10,000. Professor White’s art
resides in the permanent collections of several
Southern California museums.
Right: Trustee Dr. James L. Wright
presents Bill and his adoptive dad with an honorary paver.

ATHLETIC STADIUM AND GAUCHO
FOOTBALL ALUMNI CLUB
A
t the 2014 homecoming game, the
Saddleback Gauchos played the Orange
Coast Pirates, and guests honored three
Saddleback College coaches who were inducted
into the California Community College Football
Coaches Hall of Fame. George Hartman and Dick
Stuetz were honored posthumously. Hartman was
Saddleback’s first football coach (1968-1975)
and a five-time conference coach of the year. His
teams hold 33 school records. Stuetz was defensive line coach for 34 years, coached the baseball
program (1975-1981), and taught golf classes. Jim
Poettgen played for both coaches as a standout
defensive back and wide receiver (1973-1974) and
earned all-conference and all-America honors at
Saddleback College and Cal Poly Pomona. Poettgen
was Saddleback College’s first alumnus of the year.
The Gaucho Football Alumni Club keeps former
players involved and active in college life and
raises funds for worthy causes. Founder Seamus
Callanan explained, “Our motto for the club is
‘Gauchos helping Gauchos.’” Anyone affiliated
with Gaucho football can join. The Club works with
the foundation office to communicate with its’
members and recently raised funds through the
foundation to support an injured teammate.
The South Orange County Community College
District Board of Trustees recently approved a
renovated 8,000-seat stadium for Saddleback
College. It will replace the current stadium with its
5,000 permanent seats, which the 40,000+
student body has long outgrown. The new stadium
will also serve the local high schools in CIF and
CCCAA events, and provide a modern community
center for a variety of activities.
The new athletic stadium project also
includes a plan for new fields, a press
area and finally, bathrooms!

#GivingTuesday, an effort that aims to
harness the collective power of a unique blend
of partners — charities, families, businesses and
individuals — to transform how people think about,
talk about and participate in the giving season.
Throughout the day on December 2, 2014, the
foundation office shared a stream of information and images from both the college and the
foundation on the college twitter feed, website and
facebook pages.
More than 10,000 organizations have joined the
movement. “I love #GivingTuesday,” said Don
Rickner, executive director of the Saddleback
College Foundation, “It is an international movement, engaging and encouraging giving as a lifestyle choice. For example, in my own family we
are switching this year to supporting a veteran’s
family rather than exchanging gifts amongst ourselves. #GivingTuesday is the perfect complement to the close of the thanksgiving season and
Saddleback College is proud to be part of the fun
this year.” The next #GivingTuesday will take place
on December 1, 2015.
Above: ASG President Sarvy Pahlavan
shows her support for Saddleback.
•In 2014, 17% of the income from
#GivingTuesday was for Higher Education
institutions
•The average gift to a HE institution in 2014 was $187
•At least 700 people liked, retweeted or
reposted Saddleback photos on the day.

SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR VALUED OUTGOING BOARD MEMBERS
We honor and thank our retiring board members, John Heffernan, Nancy Padberg and Joyce Van Schaack. Between them
they represent 26 years of service to the Foundation Board. John was coming to the end of his fourth year as a board
member when, due to a promotion, he moved out of the area. John has been a great advocate for Saddleback college
in the community. He recently set up an outreach program where board members will partner with our nine local cities
to honor students in their cities who have earned a scholarship at Saddleback. John continues to support that and other
college programs long distance. Joyce sat on the board for six years as a community ambassador and great friend of the
foundation, and she continues to volunteer and support the college, particularly in the foundation and the veteran’s office.
Nancy was originally elected to the Board of Trustees in 1998 and was re-elected last November to serve her fifth term
through 2018. She has served on the foundation board of governors since 2005 and retired from both the board of trustees
and the foundation board in 2015 to enjoy a full retirement. All three will be heartily missed.
Left to Right: Joyce Van Schaack, recipient of the Tom Padberg Memorial Endowed Scholarship, Nancy Padberg and John Heffernan.
