A Look Back
Chapter 11: The Jackson Era (1824-45)
Industrial Revolution:
 The change from an agricultural society to an industrial
one
 Started in New England around 1800
 Some effects:
o Urbanization: people moving to cities
o Immigration: many immigrants came for jobs
o Industrialization: people working in factories
 Improvements in transportation:
o Erie Canal linked the Midwest to Eastern cities
o Steamboats
o Steam locomotive
 Communication: invention of the telegraph
Andrew Jackson wasn’t wealthy like most of our other presidents.
He was actually born in a log cabin and had a hard life. Jackson
became a hero at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812.
His fame and his early background helped get him elected president.
Jackson was a strong president and he had a big impact on American
politics. The number of people who were eligible to vote increased
because most states did away with the requirement to own land.
Another change was the spoils system—rewarding political
supporters with government jobs.
Jackson pushed for the Indian Removal Act which forced Native
Americans off their land. When the Cherokee were forced to move
to Indian Territory, four thousand died. This tragedy was called the
Trail of Tears.
INDIAN REMOVAL ACT:
This law forced all Native
Americans in the southeast to
move off their land. They had to
move west of the Mississippi
River.

How politics changed with Andrew Jackson

Suffrage: More people could vote
because you no longer had to own
property to be eligible to vote.

Spoils system: Jackson rewarded his
supporters with government jobs.
TRAIL OF TEARS:
When the Cherokee were forced off
their land, 4,000 of them died on the
journey to Indian Territory. This sad
journey became known as the Trail of

What is suffrage? How did it change under A.J.?
Suffrage increased under Andrew Jackson. You no
longer had to own land. This allowed several groups
the right to vote: sharecroppers and factory workers,
for example. Women, African Americans, and Native
Americans could still not vote.
What is the spoils system? How did A.J. justify it?
When Jackson was elected, he gave government jobs
to friends and supporters. He argued that ordinary
Americans were able to do government jobs but in
many cases, his supporters were unqualified.
What was the kitchen cabinet? Why was it called
that?
Jackson had an unofficial cabinet of advisors that met
in the White House kitchen.
What was it? Why did A.J. ask for Congress to pass
it?
When SC nullified the “tariff of abominations”,
Jackson asked Congress to pass the Force Act. He
threatened to use force by sending the army down to
SC. SC eventually accepted a compromise tariff.
What did this law require?
In response to white settlers who wanted to take
over Native American lands in the southeast,
Congress passed the Indian Removal Act. This law
forced all Native Americans east of the Mississippi to
move to the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma).
Trail of Tears
What was this? What caused it?
The Cherokee were forced from their homeland in
Georgia in 1838. Their journey to the Indian Territory
was brutal. Cold, hunger, exhaustion, and diseases
killed 25% of the Cherokee. It became known as the
Trail of Tears.
