UNESCO Chairs and
University Twinning and Networking/UNITWIN
UNITWIN is the abbreviation for the UNIVERSITY TWINNING and networking scheme.
The Programme was established in 1992 following the relevant decision of the General Conference of UNESCO taken at its 26th session.
The UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme was conceived as a way to advance research,
training and programme development in higher education by building university networks
and encouraging inter-university cooperation through transfer of knowledge across borders.
Since it was set up in 1992 the programme has aroused great interest among Member-States.
Today 597 UNESCO Chairs and 66 UNITWIN Networks have been in the Programme
involving over 720 institutions in 125 countries. It contains full information on each of reporting Chairs and Networks covering 70 disciplines and identifies the contact persons, partners,
events and publications for each one.

The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development
In December 2002, resolution 57/254 on the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly
and UNESCO was designated as lead agency for the promotion of the Decade.
UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization
UNESCO was founded on 16 November 1945. For this specialized United Nations agency, it
is not enough to build classrooms in devastated countries or to publish scientific breakthroughs. Education, Social and Natural Science, Culture and Communication are the means
to a far more ambitious goal : to build peace in the minds of men.
MEXT Programme “Initiatives for Attractive Education
in Graduate Schools” in Okayama University
In 2005 the programme of “Environmental Ethics - Health and the Environment” was adopted under “Initiatives for Attractive Education in Graduate Schools” of MEXT, to enhance
the performance of the Graduate School.
This programme; provides the graduate students who wish to be experts on the environment, with opportunities to undertake the practical field research in developing countries in
cooperation with their professors
and NGOs, having sent 28 graduate
students and professors to 12 countries in 2005.
Okayama City
Okayama is the capital of Okayama Prefecture and a major
transportation hub of the Chugoku Region. Nestled between the Seto Inland Sea to the south and the Chugoku
Mountains to the north, Okayama Prefecture features a
beautiful and diverse natural landscape. Our mild climate
has earned us the nickname ‘ The Land of Sunshine’ and
‘ Fruit Kingdom.’

Graduate School of Environmental Science
“Science for Asian Environment”
In April 2005 Okayama University has
established a new Graduate School of
Environmental Science. It is devoted to
the future, complex and interdisciplinary environmental science with the support of the existing Graduate School of
Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences and
Graduate School of Natural Science and
Technology. Because of the strong economic growth in the Pacific Rim, e.g.
China, Korea, Taiwan and Japan, most
of people believe that the 21st century
will become Asian era. At the same time
fast growing environmental problems
will occur and affect all Pacific regions
simultaneously. To tackle the problems
adequately a global consideration is absolutely necessary. A close international
cooperation, especially, within the Pacific Rim is significant, and this new
Graduate School should become one of
the forums for advancing environmental
science in this Asian era.
