Optical Character Recognition
Scanned Reports
In order to provide you with ALL the reports from years 1980-2007, optical character
recognition had to be used on the older years where there were no digital files. The
years 1980-1999 were scanned and then run through Optical Character Recognition
software to recognize the text and make it searchable. Due to the resolution and
integrity of some of the scans, not every word was picked up with the OCR. If your
first word search does not give you the results you want try searching for another
word or phrase.
Accessing and Navigating the SOWC
Printed Reports

Searching for a Report
You can also find Reports using the Search capability of Acrobat Reader. For example,
you can search for a Report by its title. Or, you may use the full text search capability
to find all of the Reports that contain a certain word or word string.
To learn more about using the Search capability, see Searching the Reports.
Reading the Reports on Screen
The Archive PDFS in this section of the DVD are sized to fit your computer screen.
Most years are setup to show side-by-side pages. If you want to view the pages as a
single page click on the single page icon at the bottom of the Acrobat window.
The icons above are as follows:
A. Single page view
B. Single page continuous view
C. Side-by-side continuous view
D. Side-by-side view
Note: In some of the older years the pages were scanned with two pages together so
side-by-side page view will not work well with these.
Searching the Reports
Searching in English, French or Spanish
This CD contains search engines for English, French and Spanish. When you click on a
Report in a specific language that specific language search catalog will automatically
be loaded. This allows you to type in a word or phrase in your native language and
search all Reports in that language.
To begin a search, click on the Search hotlink on the Main Menu. The "Adobe Acrobat
Search" dialog box will appear.
To complete a full text search enter a word or word string in the section of the dialog
box labeled "Find Results Containing Text". Then press the "Search" button or the
enter key. A list of Reports that meet your search criteria will appear.
Acrobat 6 Search
Acrobat 6 will automatically launch into the full search.
Acrobat 7 Search
In Acrobat 7 you will see the following find menu when you click on Search. Simply
go to the down pointing arrow to navigate to the full Search.
You can also click on the “Search Icon” in the Acrobat toolbar to access search from
any Report.
Using Search Options
How Reports Are Listed
All Reports that contain the selected word or word string are listed in rank order.
Reports with more occurrences of your search word or word string will appear higher
on the list.
Additional Search Options
Acrobat Search provides five additional search options that can be used in full text
searches:
Word Stemming - Select this option to find words with a common beginning or
"stem". For example, if the word "work" is entered in the text box and the word
stemming option is selected, Acrobat Reader will include all words that begin with
these initial letters when it performs the search. Reports that include the words
"work", "working", "works", "workout", "worker", etc. would be included in the results
window.
Sounds Like - Select this option to include words in the search that sound like the
word(s) entered in the text box (i.e. homonyms).
Thesaurus - Select this option to include words in the search that are similar in
meaning to the word(s) entered into the text box.
Match Case - Select this option to restrict the search to word(s) that have the same
capitalization as the search term(s) entered in the text box.
Proximity - Select this option when you are looking for two or more words that you
wish to find in the same report. With this option selected, the closer together the
words appear in the report, the higher the "relevancy ranking", and the higher up on
the search results list the report will appear. Note: if you use the proximity option and
use the "AND" operator, the search terms must be within three or four pages for the
report to appear in the search results list.

to your computer's clipboard. Then, you can import these elements into another
program, for example a word processing program, for further use.
