Sinclair Tops In Nation
This past week the GMVS Nordic team took on the country’s best skiers in
the Junior Olympics in Presque Isle, ME, and turned in a truly impressive
performance. The week started off on the right foot, as senior David
Sinclair outclassed the field to win the gold in the JI classic sprint race. He
was not alone on the podium, though, as Hans Halvorsen ’12 turned on the
jets to take third place. In the ladies’ race, the GMVS crew was also
impressive, with Elena Lüthi ’12 powering up to 4th place, while senior
Kristin Halvorsen finished a strong 7th. For a taste of the action, visit

The JOs continued with the 15K classic race, and Sinclair proved his win
was no fluke, as he battled with Alaska’s best skier to take 2nd place in a 2-
man race- the pair was over a minute ahead of the field. In the J2 girls’ race,
Heidi Halvorsen ’13 finished 12th, while in the 10K JI girls’ race, senior
Emily Stitt continued her outstanding season as she finished 15th. Even
GMVS Nordic alumni got in the act: Middlebury College skier Dylan Grald
’09 took 6th place in the 15K OJ race.
It’s a bit blurry, but you get the idea: Sinclair and Halvorsen (#1 and #3) on the sprint podium at JOs.
Fast company- Hans and David right after the race. The smiles are well deserved!
Sinclair digs in during the sprint
JOs continued with the freestyle (skating) events, and 13th place was
popular: Emily Stitt and Heidi Halvorsen landed there in the 5k JI and J2
races, respectively, while Dylan Grald collected 7th-place honors in the 10K
OJ race.
The conclusion of the festivities brought the relays, and GMVS skiers
anchored several successful New England teams. Most notable was the
ladies’ JI race, where Emily Stitt led her squad to a second-place finish in
the 26-team field. Not far back in 5th was the team led by Kristin
Halvorsen, while 7th place went to the team of Elena Lüthi. Another
podium spot went to GMVS alumnus Dylan Grald in the OJ race, as his
team took 3rd out of 22 teams. In the 24-team JI event, David Sinclair
anchored his squad to a 4th-place result, while Hans Halvorsen’s team
landed in 11th. For the J2 skiers, Devlin Shea ‘13 made some noise, leading
his team to a 5th-place finish, while Heidi Halvorsen and her squad took 8th.
This capped an extremely successful week for Justin and Tim’s team, and
the group has emerged as one of the top programs in the country. In fact, the
team placed fourth among all high school-level programs in the nation, and
played a huge role in New England’s record-setting performance in the
Alaska Cup, the inter-region competition that runs throughout the JOs. New
England ended up over 400 points ahead of the next-closest region, and past
and present GMVS skiers alone contributed to nearly 1/6 of the overall point
total. Congratulations to the whole squad!
In other championship action, Kaitlin Fitzgerald ’12 finished an impressive
13th overall all in the 3-event TD Bank Eastern High School Championships
in Gunstock, NH. She took 10th in the 1.2K sprint, followed by 6th in the
7.5K classic, finishing just 41 seconds out of first in the nearly half-hour
race. For the guys, junior Ryley Walker had a great start to the weekend,
taking 9th in the 1.2K sprint and 14th in the 5K skate, but then succumbed to
an ankle injury in the final race. In the overall interstate competition, thanks
in large part to these results, Vermont walloped the rest of the states,
amassing more that 20% more points than second place Maine.
“Go For The Cup”
This week the NorAm Finals are underway at Burke and Waterville Valley,
as much of the US Ski Team is on hand to lock horns with the best talent on
the continent. Sunday saw the Super G and Super Combined take place at
Burke, and PG Chris Frank collected an impressive 2nd place in the men’s
Super Combined. In the Super G portion of the event, Chris was 6th, not far
behind Joe Swensson ’04, who took 4th. This result put Chris in second
place in the overall NorAm Super G standings, 5th in the Super Combined,
and 3rd overall. With the season-long series of speed events now concluded,
Chris’ results earned him a start in all World Cup Super G races next season.
Congrats, Chris!
On The Slopes
The alpine skiers are busy with the final month of racing, as many age group
championships and race series are taking place. In the ladies’ Super G at
NorAm Finals, Chelsea Marshall of the USSA turned in a solid run to take
4th place, just a few hundredths off the podium. The NorAm racers now head
down I-89 for the technical events at Waterville Valley.
In other FIS action, the annual Ontario Swing was met with soft snow and
tough conditions. At Georgian Peaks, Emma LeBlanc ’10 had the best
finishes, taking 9th and 15th in GS. Just a few clicks down the ridge at Devil’s
Glen, Katie Fitzpatrick ’11 finished 6th and 8th, while LeBlanc had a 10th.
For the guys, Chandler Boynton ’10 took 14th in the final slalom.
In USSA action on Saturday, the crew travelled to Pico for the Karl Acker
Memorial Slalom, and Tucker Marshall outclassed the field for the win.
Nate DeFlavio ’11 skied well to 12th place, a feat shared with Maddie
Leopold ’12 in the ladies’ race. Junior Simona Croccolo took the GMVS
honors in that one, finishing 5th.
The J3 Junior Olympics are splashing away at Sunday River, and it was a
tough day of slalom on Saturday. Sammie Stolar ’15 had a strong race,
finishing 9th, while Sam Worley ’13 had the best result for the boys,
finishing 15th. The GS was cut short due to the weather, and Drew Duffy ’13
took 3rd place in what turned out to be a one-run affair. They will try to get
Super G in tomorrow.
Finally, the J4 State Championships were this weekend on Inverness, and
despite the curveballs thrown by Mother Nature, the races went well. In the
GS, 7th-grader Meg O’Shea took 4th place in the overall standings, with
classmate Amelia Kaplan finishing 8th. In the slalom, Kaplan improved on
that result to take the bronze medal, with O’Shea finishing 8th. Also
recognized in the slalom awards was Kara Gailiunas, who won the Attack
From The Back by jumping up 52 places from her #76 start position. With
these results, as well as season-long results, Kaplan, O’Shea and Katie
Utter ’15 have now qualified for the Future Stars races next week in
Waterville Valley, NH. We’d like to extend a special note of thanks to Lynn
Boynton and Kathy Burns who spearheaded the organizing committee, as
well as Beatty for all her work as Chief of Race!
College Racing
The collegiate seasons wound down last week, with NCAAs in Colorado
and USCSA Nationals at Sunday River. At NCAAs, Dartmouth’s Ace
Tarberry PG ’07 collected second place and All-American status in GS, as
well as 5th place in the slalom. Colby’s Vince Lebrun-Fortin PG ’07 took
7th and second-team All-American honors in slalom. Marie-Elaine Lepine
PG ’09 capped her first year at UNH with a 15th place in GS.
At USCSA Nationals, GMVS racers featured prominently for several teams.
Clarkson featured an all-GMVS lineup, featuring Drew Bonner ‘06, JP
Phaneuf ’07 and Cedrik Dubois ‘07, and the trio skied to 3rd overall in the
slalom, and 9th in GS. Tim Bak ’07 led Whitman College to an 11th place in
slalom, 10th in GS. For the ladies, Brown University’s Elisa Handbury ’06
was on the 4th-place Bears’ slalom team, while Katherine Jondro ’09 and
Jill Clevenger ’08 were a key part of the Clarkson University team that took
7th in the GS overall and 14th in slalom. For complete results, visit

Congratulations to these talented student-athletes!
That’s all for now. It will be a busy week, with FIS and USSA races packing
the schedule here on Inverness, as well as in other spots around New
England. The Nordies will be at Trapps for some final laps as well, so
hopefully you’ll see our kids out on what’s left of the snow. Look for more
photos and details from all the action next week in Notes!
