Ladder Of Inference
Why Is The
Ladder Of
Inference
Important?
Those who complain about the way the ball
bounces, are often the ones who dropped it.
The ladder of inference is a method of examining our thinking processes, or for expanding our thinking process to others.
It helps us to realise how we come to the conclusions we come to.
This is important because, as the ladder of inference will show, an examination and testing of the steps in our thinking
processes will indicate how many opportunities we have for coming to invalid conclusions, because we’ve made
inappropriate inferences.

Ladder Of Inference — Your Example
Describe Your
Situation
If you try and teach a pig to sing you’ll annoy the
hell out of the pig, and you’ll be wasting your
time.
A situation I was exposed to was…

Assumptions
What inference and/or assumptions need to be tested in this situation?
Learning?
What needs to happen in similar situations?
