By his own account, Playhouse founder, Frederick G. Walsh, envisioned a
theater which would last fifty years. We are now a decade-and-a-half beyond
his initial dream, and, at sixty-five, we have no plans for retirement. Along
with all the members of the Board of Directors, I am proud to be a part of
the launch of a new season. I am confident that this year’s shows will stand
squarely in the long tradition of Playhouse excellence.
Welcome
Welcome to The Huron Playhouse!
In 2011, The Huron Playhouse became a 501(c)(3) not-for profit corporation.
This meant that we would have to rely on community support and
foundation help to sustain our mission as an educational theater. As you may
already know, ticket sales account for about a third of the actual costs of running our production
season which brings young professionals into Huron to experience live theater at its best. This
season is witness to the loyalty of our patrons and sponsors, the invaluable collaboration with
local government, the Huron City Schools, and the foundations of Erie County and beyond. I
cannot omit from a growing list of accolades, our professional staff, volunteers, business friends,
and those who have served the Playhouse so faithfully in the past. We owe our continued success
to all who share our founder’s dream to make Huron, Ohio a destination for live theater.
Enjoy the show!

Playhouse History
The Huron Playhouse is the oldest continuing
summer theatre in the State of Ohio. The
Playhouse is recognized nationally as a
premiere educational summer theatre
and offers an amazing array of theatrical
experiences for some of the nation’s finest
young actors, singers, dancers, technicians,
directors, and designers.
The Playhouse has a rich and colorful history.
In the summer of 1949, under the guidance
of Professor Frederick Walsh, the theatre
opened its doors for its first season with the
lighthearted wartime comedy John Loves Mary.
For over half a century, the Playhouse has
offered its audiences a well-balanced season
of comedies, dramas, musicals, mysteries, and
melodramas. In the past 64 years, over onehalf million theatre goers have attended 390
different productions of 290 different shows.
There are now more than 1,800 alumni of The
Huron Playhouse company.
www.huronplayhouse.org
The mission of the Playhouse has always been
to provide student-artists with production
opportunities that allow them to develop the
skills, abilities, techniques, attitude, and spirit
necessary for success in the theatre world. The
Playhouse has always welcomed community

involvement from children and adults of all
ages, while giving our loyal audiences topnotch entertainment at popular prices.
The goal of the Playhouse is to maintain a
constant commitment to high quality. Five fullscale productions are mounted in an intensive
seven-week period, each show enjoying a
five-night run.
Playhouse History
Playhouse alumni have gone on to perform
on Broadway, in regional theatre, television,
feature films, theme/amusement parks, and
commercials. Many have employed their talents
and skills to the design and technical aspects
of play production. Others have completed
the educational theatre cycle by becoming
distinguished teachers of theatre or film.
The Ohio Historical Society, in 2001, recognized
The Huron Playhouse and its long-time
partnership with the Huron community by
placing a permanent historical marker in
front of the McCormick building. We at the
Playhouse are committed to entertaining future
generations for years to come.
The Playhouse operation includes
approximately 65 members, including
actors, directors, designers, technicians,
and administrative staff. The Playhouse
provides room and board and a stipend
to company members.
The human experiences of living in
dorm-style rooms, eating, working, and
creating together has fostered a family

atmosphere that many have found
hard to leave behind at the end of the
summer. Lifelong friendships, business
associations, professional connections, and
marriages have resulted from summers at The
Huron Playhouse.

The Playhouse is conveniently located an hour
west of Cleveland and an hour east of Toledo,
in the Heart of Vacationland. The historic
McCormick School has been our home for all
65 years, a mere two blocks from the beautiful
shores of Lake Erie.

The Huron Playhouse is excited to announce
the creation of our Artist In Residence program.
Each season, a Broadway professional, either
an actor, director, choreographer, or technician,
will spend the summer working with not only
The Huron Playhouse Company, but also with
students of the area in their area of profession.
The Artist In Residence will also be teaching
classes within the community.
This season, The Huron Playhouse welcomes
Karen Babcock to our theatre. Karen was a
member of the original Broadway company
of Chess and has also been seen in Broadway
productions of Damn Yankees and Wizard
of Oz. Karen will direct and choreograph our
productions of Wizard of Oz and Gypsy as well
as choreograph our production of I Love You,
You’re Perfect, Now Change.

a member of Actor’s Equity Association since
1980 and a member of the Screen Actor’s Guild
since 1982. As a natural progression from
performing professionally, Karen now directs,
choreographs and teaches musical theatre
workshops.
Last summer, Karen directed/choreographed
Gypsy for Ocean Professional Theatre Company
and directed an original play entitled The
Steve Bartman Incident at the Mile Square
Theatre in Hoboken, NJ. Other directing and/

directing from Rutgers/Mason Gross School of
the Arts in May 2013. She also holds a BFA in
drama (musical theatre option) from Carnegie
Mellon University, from which she graduated
with honors. Bill Brassea, her husband of
twenty-three years, keeps her firmly anchored
in laughter!

Each August since 1998, she’s traveled to
the heart of Austria to teach a summer
musical theatre workshop. In addition, she

The Huron Playhouse is the oldest continuing summer theatre in Ohio. As we celebrate our
65th season, we must thank each individual donor, business and foundation who have offered
their generous support! Proceeds from ticket sales alone do not sustain our overall organization;
therefore, we must build upon our mission and commitment to the community to expand the
performing arts and educational outreach that was our founding vision. The following list is a
compilation of those who have so generously contributed to The Huron Playhouse this year.
We are tremendously grateful for your patronage!

In Memoriam
John Hepler (1922-2013)
John Hepler left his mark at The Huron
Playhouse in numerous ways, one being a
very special mouse that endeared hundreds
of company members for almost 30 years. In
2013, Mr. Hepler, Assistant Professor Emeritus
of the Speech and Communications at Bowling
Green State University, passed away. We pay
tribute to John here and honor him throughout
our 65th season.
Mr. Hepler began his career at BGSU in 1949,
the same year that The Huron Playhouse was
founded. In 1951 he joined the staff at the
Playhouse, absent only one season (1959)
returning to stay until 1977. He gave of himself
freely, serving first as Scenic Designer, then
Technical Director, and finally Associate
Managing Director teaching all who would
listen and wanted to learn from the best.
www.huronplayhouse.org
From 1950-1955 John designed 34 consecutive
productions and from 1960-1969 he designed
56 consecutive productions. He directed
7 plays and designed 148 sets during his
tenure. When he wasn’t designing, he was an
active participant in the construction, design
and operation of all facets of the technical
department. If someone had a question about
how the Playhouse operated, John had the
answer.
10
Perhaps the most famous mark left at the
Playhouse was his “signature mouse”. While
teaching a class in stagecraft at Bowling Green,
John commented that “audiences saw the
scenery as background but never really noticed
the details of the painting or construction” so
he decided to paint something on the set in full
view of everyone.
Before opening night, he painted a small mouse
on the set. On opening night the cast and crew
would look for the mouse. No one could tell
others if they found it or where but this went
on for over 300 major productions at both
BGSU and the Playhouse. You never know, he
may be on the set again tonight!
In 2011, John wrote “The Huron Playhouse:
How it Began”. He outlines how he became
involved once the Speech Department at
BGSU assumed the responsibility of the then
two-year-old The Huron Playhouse. John states
it very well in the wrap up of his story: “From
the very beginning it was our goal to provide
quality productions and to give every student
company member an opportunity to learn
about the different aspects of the live theater.
Every company developed a team spirit of
cooperation, of helping each other, of taking
on difficult tasks and of taking personal pride in
their accomplishments.”
We hope our company members continue
with this attitude and continue to take this
opportunity to finetune their skills and have
the sense of comradery and pride. It is true
that John Hepler had much to do with how the
company felt and grew during the summer.
The Huron Playhouse, the Huron community,
and hundreds of students, professors and
friends, have had their lives enriched by John.
We are forever grateful for this teaching,
commitment, and friendship. He will live on at
The Huron Playhouse forever. Rest in Peace,
Dear Friend. Rest in Peace.
Did you see the mous
e?
Indeed I did, but I wo
n’t tell!
The secret must be ke
pt for the
tradition to live on.
Who will get the mo
use this time?
That’s up to John, he
decides.
I want a Hepler mous
e so bad!
Her eyes sparkled wi
th desire and
excitement.
I knew that feeling we
ll and smiled
the smile of a chosen
one;
I had a Hepler mous
e!

In 1949, then, Bowling Green University’s DesignerTechnical Director and instructor of theatre and speech,
Frederick Walsh along with John Nagy and Bill Prentice
approached Huron City School’s Superintendent R.L.
McCormick about starting a summer theatre. With a
successful meeting and tour of what is now McCormick
School, The Huron Playhouse was born. Interestingly, Walsh
left BGSU the following year over a disagreement of how
the theatre would operate.
In Tribute
Frederick G. Walsh (1915-1999)
The Huron Playhouse opened in the non-air conditioned
building to 13 paying customers in the summer of 1949 to a
production of John Loves Mary. We are extremely grateful
to the vision set forth by Dr. Walsh and R. L. McCormick.
Without their cooperation and commitment we would not
be celebrating our 65th Anniversary.
We celebrate the life of Dr. Frederick G. Walsh with what we consider an award-winning line up
of shows to honor his memory. He believed in the City of Huron and our patrons and we sincerely
share that same feeling today, 65 years later.
“I have spent a lifetime holding moonlight in my hands, having April in my eyes…..” said Frederick
Walsh. From his participation in the founding years of such notable summer theatres as The Lost
Colony on Roanoke Island, North Carolina to North Dakota’s Custer Memorial Amphitheatre in
Mandran, The Burning Hills Amphitheatre in Medora, along with The Huron Playhouse, he was a
man who turned dreams into theatres.
We’ve made it 65 years.
May his dreams continue
for at least 65 more!
