This is what I call “jacket losing weather”. Children come to school with coats and, as the weather warms throughout the day, they leave their coats on the ground and our lost and found pile swells! A reminder to check the lost and found as all items will be sent to charity at the end of this week. Many parents have written to me giving input into class placements. This information used to help build class lists. Some parents have written to me with concerns about combined grades. In our organization for next year, we are likely to have a combined grade class at every grade level in both the English and French Immersion program – they are simply a fact of life in schools. This is a result of the provincial cap of 20 students at the primary level. If we have 84 grade 1s next year for example, we will need to create a 1/2 class. When creating combined grades, we look for children who we feel will work well together. While I understand that there is some parent reticence about combined grades, please know that I cannot honour requests for a straight grade. We do not usually place children in a combined grade two years in a row. We have been allocated 9 portables again next year. There will be some changes as to which grades are in portables for the 2017-18 school year. I will share the full school organization and staff list at the end of May. Book Bonanza!! School Climate Survey Starting next week, students in grades 4 to 12 will have an opportunity to complete the "OurSCHOOL" Survey about school climate. The purpose of the survey is to better understand students' perceptions about bullying, safety at school, and student engagement. We know that when students feel safe and welcomed at school that they are more likely to achieve at higher levels and have a stronger sense of well-being. Many students will be familiar with the OurSCHOOL survey as it has been in use at the OCDSB for several years. The survey is voluntary, confidential, and takes approximately thirty to forty minutes to complete. Students are asked to answer questions related to school climate and safety, bullying, perception of school, sense of belonging, and their background, including age, gender, and ethnicity. The data from this survey will be used to help school staff develop strategies to prevent bullying and to promote safe and inclusive schools. The survey will be conducted between April 24th and May 12th, 2017. More information was sent home by schools and is also on our website Intermediate Yearbook A group of students have been working through the last four months putting together memories for the grade 7 and 8's at Broadview.
