James Hurban, 69, of 301 E. Lochhaven Drive, Fayetteville, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007, at Womack Army Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born Nov. 18, 1938, to the late Joseph and Frances Hurban of Park Falls, Wis., a place always dear to his heart. A decorated veteran, he entered the service as a young man to see the world and serve his country, which he did with honor and distinction. After serving in the Vietnam War, he graduated from Austin Peay State University and continued serving until retiring from the military after his last assignment at Fort Bragg. He made Fayetteville his home for the last 30 years. A second career in the trucking industry 3 brought him great satisfaction and contentment, though never so much as that which he found in the beaming face of a child catching their first fish under his patient tutelage. A man of uncommon modesty and joy, Jim counted his wealth on the fingers and toes of his many family members. He is survived by his wife, Ae tan Hurban; daughters, Betty Amaker and husband John of Fayetteville, Kathy Hurban of Wade, Jeannie Forbes and husband Greg of Fayetteville, and Theresa Stone and husband Alan of Raleigh; sons, John Hurban and wife Kathy of Salt Lake City and Patrick Hurban and wife Anna of Raleigh; sister, Jean Gilbertson and husband Roger of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family is grateful for the caring professionals at Womack Army Medical Center and at UNC Lineberger Cancer Research Center, and wish to especially thank Jim’s friends and colleagues at Tidewater Transit for their faith, love and support. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Fayetteville. Followed by Burial in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 S. Boylan Ave, Raleigh, NC 27603. William (Billy) Boggs of Townsend, MA died at home on 28 Dec 2007. He retired with 26 years in the military, 22 of those years were with Special Forces. Among his many medals are the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Silver Star. He is survived by his wife Patricia of 54 years, 2 sons, William and Steven, daughter Kathleen Hulse, brother Donald, sister Barbara Dalrymple, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandsons. Billy was a former donor to the Museum Association, and a Life Member of the SFA. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors in the spring. There was a small memorial service on 5 Jan 2008 at the VFW in Townsend, MA CSM (R) Kenneth D. Chaney passed away 24 September 2007. This was passed on by his daughter, Sheila A. Bisallon. No further info is available as we go to press. Ken was a Century Member of the Museum Association and a former member of the SFA. THE CURATOR’S CORNER By Roxanne Merritt Beginning this New Year, we are bustling with activity, preparing for our recertification by Department of the Army this month. Shock of shocks, my office may even get cleaned!! Anyway, we are hard at work dotting and crossing all the proverbial “i”s and “t”s. In spite of all the construction and periodic closures for work on the museum, our visitation stayed consistent with last year. In fact, we beat our old visitation by around 168 people. We had 26,727 visitors. The recurring tours of the various Special Forces course classes, the Newcomer’s Orientations, as well as special events such as the Regimental First Formations really helped. This fact was most visible when we were visited by Dr. Sonny Trimble, a forensic archeologist, who directed the work on the mass grave sites in Iraq. The evidence he acquired over three years was later used in testimony against Sadaam Hussein at his trial. Fascinating stuff. Before the day was over, we roped him into giving a short talk on what he accomplished to one of the three tours who were going through the museum simultaneously - only one which was scheduled. We are getting more and more college ROTC cadets, not, surprisingly enough, just Army, but Navy as well, as was the case on this day. Some of the big projects for 2008 are the upgrade of our museum web site, making it more accessible and available to establish a “virtual museum,” and, possibly, a “reading room” for archival documents for which we receive many requests. This requires a more sophisticated platform than we currently employ. The Association has agreed to underwrite this effort. We also hope to have a new air conditioning/heating system installed! This, hopefully, will alleviate the massive swings we have between sauna and artic conditions. Following the USAJFKSWCS Command mandate of integrating our collections in off-site areas, we will be continuing installing work at the NCO Academy and Warrant Officer Academy which are scheduled to move into the newly renovated JFK Hall this spring. We completed Phase 2 of the décor in the Camp Mackall dining facility, mounting items such as Barry Sadler’s gold album, the Son Tay print of the Blue Boy assault, much like you see at an Applebee’s. So far, the response has been good. The students and TAC really enjoy it. Later this spring, we plan on taking the Museum Association board and what members who may wish to participate to these different areas to see what we are involved in. I hope that this finds all of our membership enjoying a wonderful and prosperous New Year. Until next time. Roxanne MESSAGE FROM THE GIFT SHOP By Betty Amaker Happy New Year to all our members!! Thank you all for your continued support of the Museum Gift Shop. We are working to make improvements every year and your continued support helps tremendously. The Gift Shop is going to be putting a paper catalogue together for those who have been requesting them. We will be charging $3.00 to help with the cost of putting it together. We hope to have it finished by the time the next Museum Musing goes out. We have hired a new employee, her name is Mary Ann. The Gift Shop staff looks forward to serving our dedicated customers and member in 2008. Have a wonderful year. Thanks for your support! 4 Betty SOME SCENES OF OUR ACTIVITIES AND GOINGS ON The Executive Board/Advisory Council October meeting held in the Canopy Lounge. NOTES FROM THE EDITOR By George Heib We need your to carefully read the suggested Scholarship info and proposed Amendment to the Museum Association Constitution. and then send in the post card, for only 26¢. if you wish to make any comments you may send us an e-mail or a letter for 41¢. FYI: If you wish a copy of the constitution send us a stamped self addressed envelope. I will print out a copy and send it on to you. I just got over a period of pneumonia and therefore have been a little slow in replying to letters, e-mails, and sending out memberships. In fact I missed the January meeting (first one in 12 years). As you can see from this Musings, fortunately I am now back on track and good to go. One other note: Sometime soon we will have a section in the Gift Shop Annex (in Bank Hall) that will be devoted to used books. We have a wide verity of Military History (non-fiction and fiction) on hand. All these books have been donated by members, and all profits will go to the Museum. If you have any history books that you wish to donate to this cause, remember that we take all kinds of Military History books; hard cover or soft cover.. If you send us a list with them we can send you an acknowledgement for your tax purposes. This will occur as soon as we get some new shelves built, put in new carpeting, make some other improvements to the Bank Hall shop.
