Note: frequent references to a burial card appear below. The cards had been prepared,
apparently from other records, in December of 1919. Although the cards list the burials as
taking place in Wilson Cemetery, that would not necessarily have been the name of the
cemetery in the early days of Barre history. Quite possibly, the burying ground would have
been known as the Nichols Cemetery. The cards carry a date of Dec 24, 1919 and have a
typed name, "C. DeF. Bancroft" and are countersigned by E. H. ____y (?), Town Clerk of Barre.
The city and the town became separate entities in 1895.
The individuals shown on these pages are from the two historic sections of Wilson Cemetery
and newer sections are not represented. Any information found in these pages should be
treated as possible leads, the data presented are interpretations of items found concerning
those buried in Wilson Cemetery. Should you need further information, do your own research,
what is here may be a good starting point in your search. Refer to the Old Yard 3 & Old Yard 4

Warren Ellis, of Barre, became assistant judge
December 1, 1815, and served the next three years, and again for a while after the system was
changed in 1825. He came to Barre from Claremont, N. H., about 1803; he was born in
Claremont, May 24, 1777. Judge Ellis was a saddler by trade, and withal a good musician. He
represented Barre seven years. His son Warren H. went to Waukegan, Ill., and a daughter
married D. H. Sherman, and went west. Judge Ellis died in' Barre, June 10, 1842.2
HON. WARREN ELLIS
Came into Barre about 1803, from Claremont, N. H.; was born May 24, 1777. He was a saddler
by trade, and carried on the business very successfully. He gave considerable attention to
music, was a good performer on the violin, taught singing, and was one of the best vocalists of
his day. After he had done singing in public, he took great delight in conversing and instructing
others in the science of music. He held the office of town clerk of Barre 7 years, was judge of
the County Court 6 years, and represented the town 7 years in the General Assembly. He has
one son, Warren H. Ellis, Esq., who resides at Waukegan, Ill.; is clerk of the County Court for
that county, and one daughter, Mrs. D. H. Sherman, who resides in the West. He died at Barre,
June 10, 1842, aged 65 years.3

Wilson Cemetery provides the final resting place to many of the early Barre representatives to
the state legislature including Warren Ellis. He served six terms from 1812 – 1822. Other
members of the legislature include Nathan Harrington, 1793; Asaph Sherman, 1794, '95, '96;
Benjamin Walker, 1797, '99; Luther Holton, 1805; Phineas Thompson, 1818, '19, '27; Peter
Nichols, 1823, '26, '28; Denison Smith, 1824, '25, '29; and Alvan Carter, 1830, '32, '33.4
Several former town clerks can be found at Wilson as well. They include
Gardner Wheeler, 1796, '97; Warren Ellis, 1811, '12, '13, '14, '15, '16, '17; Alvan Carter, 1841 to
1862; and Albert Johonnott, 1863.5

In 2013, an unfortunate accident rendered Mr. Carter’s headstone no longer serviceable. An
insurance company paid for a replacement stone of white marble done in the same style as the
original, carved by one of Barre’s finest craftsmen. Workers set the replacement stone in May
of 2014. The replacement is shown in the photo at the right.
