Vision Courage Integrity
Dear Linda,
Whether you're process driven or goal oriented, at
some point, it's time to perform. Maybe it's a math test,
maybe it's summoning the courage to submit your
essay in a competition. At some point, we stand up and
say: This is it. It's time. I'm ready.
When it's performance night, it's clear - there's no
choice. The audience is waiting! Other situations are
less clear that it's time to stand up and DO - and there
are so many excuses not to. Your painting needs a little
more work; the experiment needs a little
more tweaking. Or maybe it's more immediate: I am not
brave enough to speak up in class, I won't bother to tell
that person they're hurting my feelings.
Shakespeare says, potently, that there is never a time
when it's not time. The world's a stage, and life is a
performance. Sara Bareilles, the songwriter of PNA's
finale song Brave, says don't let your life's performance
go by silently. Say it honestly, and say it loud!
We say: Be brave. Make your performance count.
And boy, did PNA's student's perform!

James Bond isn't a man much concerned

Sushi Slide Show
To launch their next segment in World
Cultures, 7th and 8th grade made sushi. We
deduce they're heading to Japan! We also
assume that they have been highly
influenced by their Mexican studies: some
of the sushi rolls looked more like burritos.
From inside out rolls to rice balls, unagi to
home smoked salmon, it was a delectable
feast.

Dear Community,
Driving home Friday night after PNA's winter concert,
my husband and I had to listen as our 12-year-old boy
bemoaned "a wasted Friday night spent singing in front
of an audience." He couldn't understand the benefit of
the performance because in his mind he had no future
plans of the big stage. However, little did he know that
he is destined for the big stage, maybe not as a singer
but as a performer of sorts because no matter his
future career choice he will spend time in front of
others and those lessons he learns from every musical
performance or presentation in front of the class are
skills that he will use over and over.
'Performance skills' are a skill set that are taught with
vigor at PNA. And honestly, I have to say that the
results of these lessons are identifiable. I can pick a
PNA graduate out of the crowd as they carry
themselves a little bit differently; they have a swagger,
confidence brought on by years of 'performing' in front
of others. So no, I do not expect that my son will ever
sing in the Grand Ole Opry but I do know that once he
graduates from PNA, he will have the confidence to
make that key presentation in front of a client thanks to
Friday night performances and some wonderful hard
working teachers. (Oh yeah, did I mention that
photographer Amy captured my son not only singing
but smiling while doing it! But don't tell him I know he
was having a good time performing.)

A Coda:
DUKE SENIOR: Thou seest we are not all alone
unhappy: This wide and universal theatre
Presents more woeful pageants than the scene
Wherein we play in.
JAQUES: All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
