Engineering Support and Fabrication
The development of new and improved mineral-beneficiation processes frequently
requires specialised or unique plant and equipment. Mintek’s in-house engineering support
works in close collaboration with process research engineers to design, construct, and
maintain pilot and demonstration plants.
This expertise also extends to the design and construction
of commercial plants, ensuring successful implementation
of technology developed by Mintek. Turnkey projects up
to a value of R100-million can be executed, including the
complete engineering design, manufacturing, installation,
and commissioning.
Mintek provides a full project management service,
comprising estimating, budgets, planning, specification,
tender preparation and adjudication, project supervision,
progress certification, and payment.
Machine shop (including precision machining)
capabilities:
• Turning (maximum length 2.5 m, maximum diameter 600 mm); • Milling (maximum length 750 mm, maximum width 500 mm);
• Cutting - power and band saws; and,
• Grinding - surface grinding, bench grinding, and
sanding.
Boiler shop
Design/drawing
• Mechanical rollers (minimum diameter 25 mm,
maximum diameter 1 500 mm);
Full three-dimensional finite element analysis capabilities,
which includes:
• Bending brakes;
•stress/strain and displacement;
•heat flow/transfer;
• Sheet metal rollers;
• Guillotines;
•Power saws;
• hydraulic flow and networks, i.e. fatigue;
• Abrasive cutters;
• computer-aided structural design capabilities to SABS
codes; and,
• Arc welding (including TIG and MIG);
• Gas welding;
• 3-D CAD (AutoCad) facilities for the preparation of
concept design drawings, arrangement, and detail
drawings for manufacture.

Production planning
The computerised production scheduling system
processes about 300 orders monthly. All manufacturing
operations are managed by experienced supervisory
staff, ensuring that all work is manufactured to
specifications, quality standards, and delivered on time.
Fabrication
Manufacturing is done in a modern 2 500 m2 workshop
with 5t electrical overhead crane facilities.
• Manufacture of vessels, conveyors, chutes, ducting,
stands, and structural steelwork.
Plastic workshop
Design and fabrication of a large variety of plastic and
fibreglass items, including intricate geometric shapes and
moulds. Operations include development work, bending,
moulding, glueing, and
welding techniques.
The range of materials
used includes
polypropylene, high-
density polyethylene, PVC, perspex and fibreglass.
Electrical workshop
Full installation and maintenance capability on 11 kV, 380
V and 220 V networks and circuits, including transformers
and switchgear.
Construction
Experienced crew for the installation, erection, and
maintenance of sophisticated plants, including:
• gold and silver refining plants;
Mintek is certified according to the ISO 9001:2000
(Quality Management System), ISO 14001 (Environmental
Management System), ISO 17025 (Testing and Calibration
Laboratory), and OHSAS 18001 (Safety) standards.

Instrumentation
Design, fabrication, development, and installation of
instrument and electrical systems for process control.
Extensive use is made of PLCs and commercial controllers
to monitor process plants using AC and DC inverters,
SCADA systems, load cells, electro/mechanical scales,
loss of mass feeders, thermocouples, DP cells, transducers,
nuclear level and density detectors, ultrasonic detectors,
electro/chemical analysers, PLCs and temperature
sensors.
